Here's my piece. Fabricating bumpers and crap on my truck seems easier to me then you guys who build cycles. Less at risk if I f-it up!

Once I moved to Arizona from Dana Point the same thing happened to me. I sold my 2wd truck and started exploring the southwest and mexico in this truck and on my dirt bike. (gotta love how anything is street legal in AZ including 2 stroke dirt bikes and whatever else)

FJ's are good trucks. A bit small on the inside for me, but a great chassis. (I like to sleep inside the truck so it's gotta be long enough) They share everything below the skin with the foreign model 2 door 4runner/Prado so all of the 4runner suspension kits work on them!

I used to work for a suspension company, let me know if you have any questions about your FJ.

Lame compared to some of the rigs posted so far, but this is my 4 wheeled transportation - an '03 F150. Bench seats, manual windows and locks, cassette player, long bed, V8, and 4X4 - pretty much the perfect truck in my mind. I haven't gotten around to getting the topper color matched yet, but the pup sure likes it for long trips. Future projects (aka Dreams) include installing the four 150W lights I've got on the way (should help when it gets dark), cranking the T bars to get a little extra clearance, replacing the rear shocks (front's are done), building a roof rack for extra storage, fabbing up some rock sliders, and building a sleeping/storage platform in the back so I don't have to set up a tent every time I go camping - basically turn it into an Expo rig.

Alright, it's two-wheel drive, but still... This was my friend Matt's old type 1 VW-powered Raceco that we raced for a couple years. It was a Letner class 1 car back in the day. Sad day when this rig got sold.

I just sold this one off about two months ago. Called it the Sand Flea. You totally have to be confident in your sexuality to drive around in a Samurai, but man this thing would go over anything. We trailered it down to baja all the time to blast around on the beach. Something to be said for simple 4x4's with short wheelbases, low gears and good ground clearance.

Here is my 05 Dakota. Not quite the monster some of you have, but it kicks ass in the snow. For some stupid reason they make a 7" lift for the 2wd Dakotas, but only a 2.5" spacer for the front of the 4x4's. So that's what I got, rolling on some 18" Mamba wheels with 32" tires. A bit more of a street truck, but I still go and play in the mountains.

I ended up selling it to a friend of mine to help fund this, my '99 F150. It's 4wd drive too but it also has 4 doors, a/c, heat, etc.. I just can't go out and tear this one up just yet. That's why I have friends who are big into off roading. They drive while I spot and ride shotgun drinking beer. Then when they break stuff it doesn't cost me any $$.

looks like 37's-38's same size all around to me... besides why would anyone stagger tire height on a 4-wheel drive? More especially larger on front. The t-case would hate life unless you figured out the correct staggered gear ratio to run.

I guess you're right, just looked up the 22re, going from 84 horse to 210 or whatever the 4.3 has would be a pretty sweet jump.

My 96 Cherokee. It is my first and current daily driver. I bought it my sophomore year from my cousin cause I was bored in the summer and had $275 burning a hole in my pocket. Had to replace the rear axle to get it road worthy. I definitely need new tires anything over 55 mph gets pretty sketchy

I've always had a thing for old Jeeps, a friends dad had an old CJ5 with the 304 V8 and he had a 54 Willys wagon I helped them with a lot. Well it rubbed off, as soon as I could afford it I got an old Baja bug for blasting around Temecula and Murrieta back when you could ditch the non local cops with a couple quick turns down an unmarked dirt road or hauling ass up a wash. Fun stuff, but it wasn't enough fast was fun but slow meant more inaccessible places could be found. After I moved to Washington state I picked up a 90 Wrangler S, loved it for what it was, a bare bones 4 cylinder go almost anywhere no top no doors machine. Later I thought I needed something bigger so I bought an 1990 Forest Service Bronco that had a 5 speed (very rare) it was a monster, big enough for everything but tight trails. It was a good truck, till the X-wife sugared the gas tank. Joined the Navy bounced around over seas a while came back to China Lake (BFE Mohave/Death Valley) and I got an old 1955 CJ5 ( best and worst Jeep I'll ever own), then bought my step mom's Xterra for 1/2 blue book (wanted a newer TJ unlimited but the price was too good to turn down)
http://img.tapatalk.com/ad3a2f18-a121-5cc8.jpg
Great truck, even if it is a little soccer momish, took me all over Anza Borrego without fail (or getting stuck). My OL didn't want to off road it too hard since it was too nice a truck. Paid it off and sold it to buy a CJ6, Scrambler or TJ unlimited (not one of those new 4 door monstrosities) and some how ended up with a 1st generation 1986 Toyota 4Runner. Top still comes off, doors will after I get some different hinge pins, it will haul me TOL, a couple car seats and the dogs comfortably along with our gear. The 22R motor is pretty bullet proof and there are tons of spares still available pretty inexpensively. Not a bad compromise, I hear they're pretty competent little rigs.

Update on the new to me 86 1st Gen 4Runner

HOLY FUCK BALLS WE MADE IT HOME!

Took the Toyota out for its first long distance trip, we were going to test out its off road prowess up the back side of Mt. Palomar then follow the back way out to Julian for dinner and apple pie. Well the trail was littered with no trespassing signs, enough so that I figured we could be in to some kind of trouble if we went ahead anyways. That and we'd seen a Forrest Service truck lurking about. So we decided on early dinner/late lunch instead. Truck did pretty good but I think there's either a fuel delivery or ignition gremlin still haunting the truck. I'd swapped out the plugs last week and the truck seemed to be pretty thankful, but the cap and plug wires must be pushing at least 10 years old so they'll need to go soon. The little 4-banger won't be willing any mountain climbing trophies when it comes to speed but it still chugged right along. My kid and the puppies had a pretty good time walking around looking at everything there was to see. My wife and I enjoyed some barbecued ribs and Cesar salad with a couple Sierra Nevada Summer Brews at Baileys BBQ while laughing at all the RUBs, SOA wannabes and HOG riders before picking up a freshly bakes apple pie and heading back home. Coming down the mountain I noticed the truck was getting difficult to jump between gears in the corners and in the straights when 5th gear was warranted. No biggie I'd just take a look at the clutch and see if there was an adjustment once we got home and take up some slack, after all stuff like this is to be expected on a truck made in 1986. At least thats what I thought till I came rolling up to the stop sign where the turn off to Anza is. The truck was damn near impossible to get into 1st gear and the clutch pedal felt like a wet noodle and I had to rely on synchronizing the engines RPM's with the trucks speed in that gear. 3rd gear was impossible and 5th wasn't happening, we'd have to limp home in 2nd and 4th gear. Not going to be fun there's got to be at least a dozen or so lights between highway 79 and Murrieta. Miraculously we were able to make just about every light on the 79 with a little creative braking and good timing. We only got hung up at 2 lights all the way home, and now I know that 2nd gear starts from a dead stop with the starter are possible. I'm not real happy about this since I just got the truck but after about 2 minutes under the hood I've got it narrowed down to 1 of 2 things, a leaky hydraulic line that just got made worse by the change in altitude or the clutch slave cylinder just gave way. Both not cool, but at least the master cylinder looks good to go other than being well um empty! I will give the little 4Runner one thing and it didn't leave us stranded we made it home safe and sound. Tomorrow I'll sort all the clutch issues out, hopefully I'll just need to top up the master cylinder and give it a few pumps to get things working again temporarily till I can determine what exactly it needs besides the obvious band-aid.

The stupid thing is I was so worried about getting the wife and kid home I didn't want to stop and I had a big bottle of fluid in the glove box that would have fixed the problem temporarily enough to make it normally. Meh hindsight being 20/20 and all I'm gonna toss a set of tools in the side cubby with some spare fluids duct tape etc in for that next just in case moment and with a truck that's 24 years old its bound to happen again sooner or later.

4x4s indeed are special though there is just a specific market for them to really be that useful or at least be used to their optimum level.

Though there is no problem with running them on the road for city driving, I think that you will be able to utilize it to the fullest once you bring it to the wild.

Not wild, wild with animals but for those who are adventure junkies, I think that a good spin on the desert would keep it running great.
