Well i know myself I've rode bmx for years so it was just a natural transition from one to the other. After seeing some of baxter's parts and a lot of make shift motorcycle bike racks I've learned that this is true for a lot of people.

So who rides, or used to?

this is my baby, whenever I don't have my knees in the breeze I try and pedal this thing around town from time to time.

I had a powerlite back in the day. Everyone said I was gonna break the frame jumping off everything, never did. Then I joined the army and my grandma sold it for like 5 bux

I rode for about 7 years, all starting with my powerlite and working my way thru Eastern, Standard, fit and fly frames/part combinations. I still love riding even though I have sold the last of my BMX stuff and don't actually ride anymore. I should get off my ass and actually make time, but my knees have seen better days (and I'm only 25 ha!) especially since I skateboarded for years as well. So perhaps its a good thing and I should just stick to motorbikes. Props to all of you guys still riding!

Awesome!! I had an SE Racing PK Ripper circa '83/'84, and I miss it terribly. White frame, blue "Landing Gear" forks, KKT Lightning pedals, and I can't for the life of me remember what cranks. Lots of good times and injuries on that ride. I'll have to see if my mom still has those photos...

Still have my S&M Holmes (NG) in the shed! took the wheels apart to replace the hubs a few years ago and got screwed on some hubs. Have not ridden since except for playing on other peoples bikes once in a while.

I love my bmx. My riding has been slowing down a bit lately because of classes and my bad knees.

I dont think I'll ever quit riding. Bmx and choppers go together like mac n cheese.

I raced at an expert level for most of the 80's. Had a Patterson, a PK Ripper, a 24" GT cruiser to name a few. At 41 I'm too old for stunting anymore, but I still ride a GT cruiser around the 'hood.

I was way into the game in the 80's and 90's, spent most of the 00's on motorbikes, but I've always had a bike in the garage. Just put new grips and rubber on the old schwinn hydra-glide a few weeks back...

BMX/CHOPPER CULTURE UPDATE:

I saw Inglorious Basterds with Courtney Hallowell (ex-Street Choppers editor) last night, where he gave me an advance copy of the new Garage magazine. TWO stories about old-school BMX in there: The Stu Thomsen interview (If you have to ask who Stu is, you're not the BMXer you think you are), and Gary Turner (the G-T of GT)

Stu Thomsen gave me pointers on my one-pedal start at the Bradenton BMX track in 1976 during the SE summer tour, and we would become friends when I raced him at the Craigmuer, NJ National in '79. I worked at GT from Fall 1986 to Summer 1989, and Gary Turner personally welded the halfpipe ramp that I designed and that Kim Boyle inherited when I quit GT to work at Mongoose.

Billdozer and I have a theory about old BMXers and skaters, and it's this: the hardiest ones get into choppers when it hurts too much to slam on the ground every day.

This thread proves our premise. Thanks for sharing your roots, guys.

Here's my 25 year old racer. At the time I was co-sponsored by GT and sponsored by a local bike shop. After that I got picked up by CW Racing and rode for them for about 6 years. Raced from 1979 through '87 in good ol' So Cal.

X-mas of 81, just turned 5 and got my 1st Robinson. A good friend of my family was the team manager at this time, he gave me this bike and got me started racing at Devonshire Downs. What a lucky kid I was! Great memories! Raced on and off until the the early 90's. I can't remember not loving BMX. Sweet mullets and bent forks in the last pic.

went to woodward back in 2000 got back and thought I was god on a bike and broke my leg in half on my trails. Took a pretty long hiatus from riding finally got a bike again a couple years ago but sold it for motorcycle parts. I plan on getting another one real soon but im done with the 20 inchers i want to get an eastern nighttrain or a black market. Still trying to convince the old lady to let me build a mini ramp with spine in my back yard...we'll see if that happens.

I dont really consider myself a bmxer, but then again...

I have been a 3-4 day a week skater for over 20 years, before skating much i raced bmx on the local ama, nbl, circuit, i was picked up by cook bros for a few years and used to rock a little 10lb rocket with knobby blue sew-ups and the whole deal! Once I started skating, i never got on another bike.
However, i am from, and still live in Colo. I have been snowboarding since the early eighties. from about 19-30 years old i raced Snowboardcross competitively, managed to do it for a living for a few years too... if you arent familliar with snowboardcross, it is the bastard child of snowboarding... 6 dudes deep, 30-50mph on snow through a bmx/ motocross type course.

for me, choppin and riding bikes scratches the itch to go snowboard more than it does to go skate

As for the theory of old bikers and skaters ride choppers, i still hit the concrete on a regular basis, in a way it keeps me young, so yeah i agree, although there is also a shit-ton of the whole self expression diy alpha type thrown in...

used to ride a 6 ft spine ramp and street everyday. from the same town as jay miron, rode street and mini with him once haha. had a couple pictures/bio's in magazines, made a local video that sold quite a few copies, mostly in Canada but some to the US and even a few to europe somehow. went to a couple of metro jam contests in toronto/vancouver but bombed.. too scared of all the people watching haha. didn't ride too much this summer but plan to next year. would love to build another mini ramp somewhere. this is the only riding pic I have on my computer

I lived around the corner from BMX racers Eddie & Mike King. Every kid back then had a BMX bike. I had a Mongoose with Ashtabula parts and mags that everyone called spider mags. None of us were in the same league as the King brothers but we had a blast flying off ramps, dirt mounds, and racing each other on dirt trails at a place we called "The Pits". This was years before they developed Ocean View Hills down by the 805.

It's no wonder we've moved on to choppers. What's the first thing you did when you were a kid and got a new bike? You through the reflectors, chain gaurd, kickstand, and pads in the fucking trash!

I grew up in the Bay Area in the '80's. Skateboards and BMX were just assumed. A few guys got sponsored, most didn't. We would just invent ways to try and break bones or kill ourselves.
I remember my first "BMX" was on a Christmas, either '82, or '83 was a "Seiko." Total piece of shit, and about the first thing I did was take everything off that I could. I very quickly went through a long sucession of Diamond Backs and Mongoose bikes with parts from everything. Mowing lawns, cleaning pools, painting address numbers on the curb and paper routes fed my skateboard BMX and dirt bike habit. Then I got my first street bike and never looked back. I'm too damn old and fat to be fucking around on boards or bikes now, and christ the shit the kids are doing now is so many light years beyond even what the best of us could do then it boggles my mind.
A little while ago my wife and I were at a department store, and they had some crappy store board out of the box in an aisle. I walked over to it and said something like "Man it's been years since I got on one of these." and got on it to be a cool kid. I immediately lost my balance and grabbed a shelf to steady myself.
My wife laughed and said "Yeah, you got some mad skills there brah."

I won a few bmx trophies back in the 80's. Got tired of the a-hole scene at the track. Freestyle and jumping burning Christmas trees was more fun anyway. Still got my Redline and Haro Sport. My son put my jr. size Torker together and loves it.
I saved a Shimano DX pedal for a kicker on the Triumph and actually used it. it's the only bmx hint on the chop.

Got no handy pics of my bikes (I'll rummage through our family albums.)

Nostalgia lead me back to an old track we use to ride and race as kids.
Some fond memories. The council maintains the grass but it don't get used now.
It was laid in about 1980.
One of the first 8 lane in the country.
Was mildly surprised the gate wasn't ripped for scrap.

I was always on a board, but there was a kid floating around our circle down in San Diego in the early to mid 90's that killed any thing. Dave Young. I think he had a cover on some mag doing a huge rail in San Marcos. He was 15 or some where close. He had a friend named Ken Hale, nicest and craziest dude I ever lived with.

Sorry no pictures.

Just don't get what happened. When I rode, a tailwhip was the shit. Now u need to do one out of a front flip into a nose-stall with no fucking front brake! It's gotta be the steroids they put in the beef now-a-days....... Right?

Also pop in Seek and Destroy every now and then. Van and Garrett killed it in that vid. Almost shit myself when I saw them in a recent Dig magazine at the airport. The article was about them being old-timers of the sport. Think Taj and Ruben Alcantara were also in there. I remember working at Woodward with Ruben before anybody even knew about him. Man.......crazy stuff.

I can remember being at woodward and having nate wessel finding out we were locals and asking us to show him all the great spots. Listing to dave mirra tell us what its really like in the pro life and having brian castillo razz me/bitch at me for not keeping a smooth constant flow though my session, and hearing them talk about Trevor Meyer and his goofy ears and watch and shit.

I lived so fucking close that i photocopied one of their badges got it to look real enough (remember when nobody knew photoshop and you could really get away with shit? haha) i could ride all day go home and keep doing it and nobody ever cared really.

We probably crossed paths a lot and never even knew it dude, that's badass :cheersmate:

He is a little older in the film, but rides the same. I know he blew up but I moved up to San Francisco and lost touch, only saw him a couple times up here.

I think there were two Dave Youngs also, but that looks to be him. He was crazy like that.

Funny shit. I got a job there for 2 weeks because a drug-dealer dude i knew was banging one of the chicks that did the staffing......was totally out of nowhere.......just at the trails one day and he basically asked if we wanted to go to Woodward ......for free. ..Was at some bonfire when at Woodward one night.....remember Mira running around with nyquist on his back......I was fucking star-struck......u think steve Crandall really took a shit in the foam pit?

Crandall was local for us and he was just one crazy wild bastard, i hung out in Bethlehem a lot during the ECD days, shit those times were wild.

We told mirra and the rest of the dudes about bucknell and SU and took them to a few of the college bars and local campus parties, where thanks to sites like okcupid and pof i had ins to the parties some of the best nights of my life!

they would get a few week break in between campers. a lot of rich snobby kids, Well during one of the breaks on the way back from an out door skate park up far up north we stopped by my house (we lived in rural PA) to pick up some tubes (i stock piled tons) and a set of pegs that i was going to give to one of my friends, brian castillo and nate wessel were in my friends van, Well my dad came out and was like "are you buys hungry, my wife has burgers and hot dogs on the grill.. I naturally said "nah dad we gotta go" and Castillo popped his head up and said "i am starving!" so 10 mins later i was sharing a meal at my parents house with two pro level bikers haha"

i really miss those old days. the carefree feeling of bmx and doing whatever whenever.

i don't ride nearly as much as i used to, though i wish i did. Got to hang/ride with a lot of very awesome riders over the years. i'll still get out and huck myself now and then, but having a full time job/band means i have to be careful. falling definitely sucks 5x as bad now..haha

i grew up riding on some trails we built across the street, and started racing bmx at rehbeins arena (an old horse arena, turn bmx track) in MN. rode till i got my license, quit for a few years, started again at like 21 and realized my knees couldnt take the beating and my leg strength was gone (i grew like a foot after high school)

my last ride was a haro DV8 frame with racelite bars and an answer cf fork, proline crank and some wheels i laced up i believe they were the super narrow (and weak) sun rims laced to haro hubs with low friction bearings and shit in em. at the time i was racing i thought i had to have all the lightest and best shit, when really i needed to go do some cardio and build some muscle (im a lanky fucker)

my brother got a DUI and rode my bike to a party, and claims someone stole it. i think he left it by the road (embarassed to ride a bike into a party) and someone drove by and grabbed it. either way im out my bike, and haro DV8 frames are hard to find. they are not really a bmx frame i believe they were more of a freestyle/ramp frame but i liked it for racing. i also had a few schwinn prostock frames which seemed long and we had a few people break the necks clean off of them. anyways, if you have a dv8 ill buy it! lol

I've still got my original specialized fatboy bone stock from when I was about 13. Saving it for my son. Got a early 90s redline in there too just collecting the shed dust.

I still have my 48lbs Metal Dave Young, and I got a Eddie Cleveland Fit signature 2 years ago. Its funny that it weights less than half of my old ride and takes just as much abuse.

Never rode Bennington, but we used to hit up Burlington a ton. I'm across the lake in Plattsburgh.

ive been on two wheels for 20 years. BMX was/is my life but sadly due to breaking both legs a year apart i haven't been able to jump on the ol' bmx in over a year. anyone that is unable to ride knows that feeling... my bmx dreams fucking kill me.... but a few weeks ago i took the harley out and shredded the 5 foot tall 200 feet long banks down at the local highschool.

I skateboarded my whole life and we would ride BMX when it rained. I always had Mongoose bikes thanks to Cru Jones in Rad. I did have a Diamond Back Cool Streak once as well.
