1978 shovelhead Kicker pushes through not catching

Well it's not going to fix itself. Drain the trans, remove the side cover and have a look to see what's broken. :)


Likely the key on the mainshaft which locates the starter clutch gear has sheared. So when you kick the kick arm, the crank gear on the kick arm shaft is spinning the kicker gear (on the mainshaft) which is freely spinning the starter clutch gear without spinning the mainshaft.

IF you are feeling this while trying to kick over the bike, when you pull the side cover off you will find that the cover itself is cracked around the kicker arm bushing. This is a very common problem. Look for cracks, if you find any you will have to replace the side cover.
