I'm debating where my fender should sit and need some feedback. I don't think this forum has polls of any sort yet (might want to include this in the future?), so I guess just post and I'll tally the votes.
Here's a pic if I used the full fender:

now that I looked at the pic.....screw that!! Here's about a 3/4 shot:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o131/jay_sco/Sportster/IMG_3168.jpg
and last is about half fender:

No matter where it sits I'm going to end it at the bottom frame rails. I dig the look of a 6" section of rear fender, but this will be ridden almost daily so I want something there to actualy keep crap off my back and bike, yet still look cool. Since I just shitcanned the #1 pic, please vote 2 or 3.... or for you smarties you can vote 2.5, 2.389, etc. I'm already leaning toward the #3.

I'd say go with 3. It'll look best and still keep you relatively muck free.

I've never seen a bike that didn't look good with the rear fender tip at 1 o'clock. PHoto #3 in your sequence. just my 0.02.

Somewhere in between 2 and 3 If you plan on running a sissy bar, think how your fender being too far forward will effect it's angle. Seeing your front end effects this too, for me anyway. If very short or no SB then 3.

Set your sissy bar or fender struts/whatever at an angle that is pleasing to look at. Then cut the fender off 2 or 3 inches past that. But I like picture 3.

1/2 fender all the way no question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But you should do what you like, you have to ride it.

If you really want to keep shit off your back then #2. #3 looks totally bitchin' though.

Question......if I go with the half and I secure it good at the frame do I need struts? It's a heavy duty fender and I won't have any riders.

What about your gear for those long rides?

my .02 is strut that fender some how.

just the vibration of road will wreck that fender.

To be honest, with the wife and 3 little rugrats I don't go on many long rides, exept in the minivan. With my "long" rides I can fit pretty much everything I'd need in my backpack.
STANDARD, what do you mean by wrecking the fender from vibration? It's a pretty stout fender, and the only unsupported part would be about 12". I'd mount it to both the top and bottom frame rails. I really dont know, so please elaborate.

Go for it. Worse case you end up re-welding your mounts and/or adding struts, beefier mounts or reinforce the fender below, out of sight.
And if you succeed and it's the way you wanted it mission accomplished.
