Well been lurking a bit and figured I'd share.

Name's Jason from the Kenosha/Racine area (machinist by trade). Figured I'd share my xs650 build. Started tearing her apart a couple of days ago. Chopped her up last night and started welding (after about 6 beers). Here's where I've gotten: (purchased the bike for 400):

loooks good so far a little long for a bobber but hey thats just me did you use a kit for your hardtail or all handbuilt??

bearpaws1973

It is a universal kit. I went for the gusto! I think I,m gonna name it Booger, from all the boogered welds. The are strong but fugly! I will post more pics tomorrow. I kinda planned on it being ugly. I found a sporty peanut tank, a bruised battered ironhead rear fender, a whitr leather bates seat. The whole thing is gonna run me about 800. I wish I was a better welder.....

Found out what is wrong with the welder! The cooling fan is dead, so I would get 20-30 seconds of bead and kaput! So many interupted welds. The are strong but ugly. Spent the evening shoring up and will spend today grinding. I should have ceramic paint on the frame tonight. Motor in tomorrow. I will post pics when the motor is in.

after a little ghetto spray, laid her back down and tried that rear 60's sporty fender on. What you think respray the fender or just clean it up?

I will post pics tomorrow with motor in....

Damn dude, hope your 6'3+ that stretch looks fuckin long. Might wanna rake and extend the front end, give it a bit more proportion.

Thats up to you dude, if you can manage the bike at that length, than fuckin rock it all damn day, everyones looking for a diff. style these days. Hell do one of those DOUBLE ENGINE BIKES! hahaha, you could easily mount another 650 in there! haha Cool build though man, cant wait to see it done.

personally its all up to you how you want your bike but if your doing long frame you need to do a longer fork and more rake to keep it decently controlable. if your lookin at the bobber style and tahts what your after id say knock at least 3" outta that frame kit you put on. it wouldnt be too hard just hack 3" out and then 45 bevel your tubing and stick a slug in rosette weld that sucker up and weld up your seam it will be like it never happened

LOL That would rock. I'm here in Kenosha and I have seen "Hog Slayer" at TC's shop on a couple of occasions. Love that beast!

Tonights update:

Installed pipe and rear SHIFTER (duh I'm tired) controls, and seat, Check out the custom springs. They are the helper springs from a wrx coilover system (they are shot, the coilovers that is):

Still too long? (thats what she said)

I kinda think I'm going to chop that fender like that. I have an extra ammo box I may use as the battery box. I like how the pipe breaks the rear line....

Bike looks more proportionate with someone on it, I would still rake that front end out a good 3-4 inches. A vertical center suport under your seat may do it good too, hows the flex on it?

albertahawk
06-05-2010, 10:20 AM
i still say rake it or shorten it either one

bearpaws1973
06-06-2010, 1:03 PM
I'm getting close to being done. I want to see it together than I will look at raking it. I'm a headlight, a wiring harness, and chain from firing it up (also speedo mount, fuel lines). Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I've ridden a 10" stretched 'busa a couple of times with a 230 wheel. It wasn't that difficult. I would like to try riding the xs a couple of times before I rake it. I do think if it were raked a few degrees it would rock!

Total cost has been about $900 including the bike. This cost will probably drop, I have parts left from the chop left over to sell.

Out of interest how much stretch are you actually running? if you don't know could you give me a dimension from the centre downtube to the axle plates?

The bike looks great. I have a $2 suggestion that would make a HUGE difference in my opinion. Go buy black zip ties, When I look at the tail light my gaze goes straight to the white ones. Maybe that's just me.

I like it.

bearpaws1973

The stretch end up being about 6.5 inches with 3" of drop the chain length was exactly 130 links. Great suggestion on the zip ties. I have been doing the shakedowns on the bike, I will get on it this week. I also have to shrink wrap the wires. It isn't entirely finished, I have lotsa little things I have to take care of. This winter will be frame powdercoat and turning down the fork tubes (if I dont get a springer front). Also trying to get the harness into the frame

Looks great! My xs is running a 126 length chain with about a 5 inch stretch. I think yours look alot longer due to the seat position. Great job!

Made a couple of changes, added speedo, different springs, moved the seat back 2.5 inches, different head lamp brackets, this will be a build I'm always working on. I put a 110 miles on it on friday so it is running great.

I'm thinking about getting an oval oil "bag" and running it under the seat, as a storage area (tools) found a different fender I'm working on right now.
