I bought one at a little village flea market, it was some 80's orange open face helmet it said 20 swedish kronor- about 3usd , only reason i bought it was a old sticker on it "spola kröken" in english it means flush the booze down the toilet, it was a anti alcohol campaighn in the 70-80's here, some kind of irony in me driving around in that old agv!

Anyone know a legit place besides Helmutts to get a Moto 3 restored? Helmutts is a 5 month wait. Looking for sooner than that.

Thanks

Does anyone have a Speed and Strength 3/4? If so do you what are the pros and cons vs a v2, Bell, or Bonanza Biltwell?

I can only speak on a Bell Custom 500 3/4. Next to the NOV DOT (can't remember who makes it) this is one of the slimmest DOT's I've found. I'm a bit of a small guy and most helmets make me look like a bobble head. This one doesn't. Absolutely love this one. Sizing chart is spot on too.

AND, J&P cycles is running a sale on them for $50.

I'm still surprised that Biltwell, Bell or some other brand hasn't made a modern version of the Moto 3 or the Japanese Blaster.

BTW just checked out oldschool helmets on their webpage and OMG do I want this helmet, since I am German I couldn't wear this not, technicaly speaking I could of course since I am living in Ireland and not Germany but I couldn't rock anything with the SS sign on it, hard to explain, its pretty much the ultimate taboo for me.

I was given this by a co-worker tonight. It fits perfect but needs a reline obviously. The snaps are a little nasty and it has a few scuffs but free is free. I was searching on here and came across a few guys that have done their own but I couldn't find any "how to" type of posts. This would be a new adventure for me and since it's on the inside it wouldn't have to look perfect but I'm looking for some direction in relining it myself. Any help would be much appreciated.

That is a Grant RG-9. I would just rip out the interior, not the ear pieces, and start over if it is that bad. Remove the black/silver trim. Take out the foam insert. Usually start with 1/8in foam and make the donut that goes around your head. Do this by making the foam into roll. stick it in the Styrofoam bucket. use a marker around the edges of the lid to trace the outline. Cut off the excess. Use 3m spray adhesive and some velvet to line the foam. Massage it back in the helmet and use the same 3m spray.

I just recently got this Bell Arrow and I like it a lot. I almost always wear full face helmets these days. This one or a dual sport full face with a shield. We just had a new baby so im going the DOT route all the time now. I'm actually selling all my old 3/4's in the classifieds right now.

I just went from a Gringo to a Street Bandit. I like the looks of the Gringo, maybe not better, but equally. However I will never wear it again after wearing my bandit. no more neck aches from lift and an actual visor make a much more comfortable ride. Plus, white is safer than black. so there is that, too

funkstauzz

So I think I'm going to buy one of these and take the visor off...

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005FON382?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&s=

but I noticed that the ones with the crazy ass designs are like $90 cheaper.

IYO Would it be worth the difference to buy a colored one and paint it?

I also considered a Gringo but this one is Snell approved. I don't know that it really matters though.

In my experience there is no lift on the Gringo, probably because there are cheek pads that hold it pretty snug to your face.

Just picked up a 3/4 Daytona in Gun Metal Grey. So far, I like it pretty well. I like the fit a lot better than my ol' lady's Bell 500 - not as bubble-headed and doesn't leave a diamond pattern on my damn forehead after wearing it. I much prefer my old orange bucket from 1973 but around here getting stopped with a non-DOT helmet gets you an instant $250 ticket. Fuckers.

Any chance you could get your artist to change the plug wire on the right of the picture (anatomical left on the heart)? It's coming out of the left subclavian artery (outflow) but then it plugs into the common carotid artery (outflow). If he can change it to instead plug into the vessel I've circled in blue (left brachiocephalic vein = return), it will make more sense, as the blood coming back from the left subclavian artery distribution will eventually wind up in the left brachiocephalic vein as it returns to the heart. The other wire (on the left side of your photo) appears to be correct: most of the blood exiting from the brachiocephalic trunk (artery = outgoing) will eventually return to the heart via the right brachiocephalic vein. Much respect on the Cummins, BTW.

in everyone's professional opinion, If I was gonna spraypaint a flat black Gringo, and I wanted gloss black on it, would it make more sense to use gloss black paint, gloss black w/clearcoat, or just the clearcoat since it's black base already?

with the other helmet I painted, I used DupliColor with no clearcloat and no paint has smeared or run, so as far as rattle-can jobs, I'm not completely sold on using clearcoat anyway

Hey fellas. I'm new to the forums, so I apologize if I skipped some protocol, and please feel free to "correct" me, but i just had a question here.

I wear an old black and red 3/4 bucket, and I am about to buy a new Novodot. I want to buy a bubble shield for them.

My question is: If you were gonna buy a bubble but only wanted to buy one to start with, what color would you go for? Clear or smoke or some other color gradient? I don't wanna go with a full smoke "sun shade" color that I assume will prevent me from using it at night.

I'm looking for pros and cons toward function more than fashion. I wear red gradient glasses for certain duties at work and I see advantages of them. They help me differentiate between like colored stuff in the desert where i work. I am wondering if any of the colors help with traffic issues in a similar way.

What is everyone's experience with them?

This may not apply to you, but I wear my bubble in the morning when I ride to work and it's a little chilly. It's also usually dark when I leave and light when I get there. So I bought the one thats got a little bit of tint at the top, but fades to clear. When it's sunny, I usually just wear sunglasses. If it's cold AND sunny, I wear both.

As far as colors to help you see, I don't know. When I road my mountain bike, I used to wear yellow lenses because they seemed to make everything brighter and stand out more.

I thought red was just when you wanted to read the secret code on the cereal box or when using the blacklight to look for blood.

Hey Zero I have two Biltwell bubbles, a smoked gradient and a chrome mirror. If I had to pick one to wear all the time it would be the gradient, it provides enough shade in the sun while not being too dark at night.

I'm holding out for a photochromic bubble shield. The lens on my full face helmet is photochromic and it's been well worth the money. I'm actually a little surprised nobody makes them. With the increased popularity of bubble shields I'd think a photochromic would fucking sell.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I'll probably end up going with a gradient shield

As for the red gradient I wear some red lensed polarized glasses at work in the desert. Part of my job requires me to find vertical 4x4 posts planted hundreds of meters out in the midst of tons of cacti, yucca plants and Joshua trees. Without the glasses, you can look right past a post for hours. With them on, the posts pop out like someone lit them with christmas lights. They also make rattlesnakes stand out against the rocky desert floor, which has saved my cute little white ass more than once.

I theorize that this same effect might work in traffic to make a more stark contrast between separate elements like pedestrians or two cars. IF I end up buying a red lens, I'll post if i notice any benefit like that (but it's a long shot I'll buy one).

Thanks again.

I've been debating getting a red gradient for a while, now I'm even more intrigued.

Anyone use an MX they'd recommend? Maybe something like Bell's MX2, I have an arthur fulmer MX that kicks ass. Wind in my face, low noise (FAR better than 3/4) and I like having the jaw pads and my chin protected. At 90mph it doesn't pull up at all, even with the visor. The gringo I don't want my chin sticking out, I have a goofy head and I'm sure it will--and I'm all ready pushing this 70's vibe and I don't want it to look like the circus came to town.

Hey guys, Ive been lurking around here for a while but this is my first actual post. I have been on the eternal search (like everybody else) for a 3/4 that doesnt look ridiculous and I think I got close. I found these AFX FX-76 helmets at our local shop here and they fit me pretty well and fit pretty tight up top, not a lot of extra helmet up there for that Gazoo look. They are sized huge. I have a 24" head and am scraping the XXL on most helmets. In AFX Im a Large, haha. I just came back home from the first ride with it and did about 60 miles highway at 60MPH and no lift at all. Noise it about normal I guess, I dont really pay much attention. I have a full face which is obviously quieter and a Fulmer 3/4 from '73 which is louder. I wasnt bothered by the noise tonight, but I like loud pipes and the sound of wind. Ive tried the new Fulmers, the Rockhard American Classic (sent it back) and the Speed and Strength Rooke and they all looked like bobbles to me. Ill keep the AFX for spring/summer rides and pick up a Gringo for fall. There arent alot of reviews of this helmet online but I dig it.

Yeah I know, photos of me wearing it....

My girl has one. I'll have to take pics of her 3/4 compared to my Bell custom 300 3/4, and vintage 70's 3/4. I wore hers once and its as comfortable as my Bell but a LOT slimmer.

I do and I love it. It's not the prettiest, and the foam across the back of the neck looks a little crooked, but I don't notice it when I wear it. It was the only 3/4 I found to fit my huge head, and it's not insanely large either. I think it's the smallest outside diameter 3/4 DOT on the market.

Not exactly an old school bucket question but has anyone had any experience with Simpson Helmets (the racing company)

I want a full face and have a chance to buy a Super Bandit for way cheaper than normal, but I don't have a chance to try it before i buy. They come in hat sizes, but I kinda fluctuate between two numerical hat sizes depending on the hat company (7 5/8 - 7 3/4). I'm trying to find someone who can tell me how their sizes fit. I know in normal full face buckets I have to buy XL/XXL depending on the maker and I have an oval shaped head (Arai long oval helmets fit me perfect, but cost an arm and three legs). I emailed Simpson, but never got a reply. Plus I trust customer reviews more than company drivel.

Biltwell question:
My head lands right between a M and L Bonanza. The L drags way too much and moves a bit and the M starts to hurt my head after 45 minutes or so. Anyone else had this problem or have a suggestion? I tried the Bell 500 and had the same issue. I figured the M Bonanza would break in but I've got about 5000 miles on it and nothing has changed.

I dig the Gringo, but yeah I consider it a Summer full face. The blast shield looks like an afterthought anyway. I like the Gringo S concept, but the shield on it doesn't really look like it fits right either - a tinted option might change that

It's horse shit, they could've incorporated a vent under the shield or at least at the forehead. The whole time I was pulling on the freeway I was thinking "this is it, gonna die." The fog wouldn't disappear even at 50-60mph, with two snaps undone! It was fucking incredible how awful it was.

^^^^^I'm selling all my shit, have a fulmer that looks nicer than that moto 3, hopefully it's still worth some dough.

I wouldn't go as far as to say I am selling my Biltwell helmet....but you are correct...it doesn't vent and when I ride in the rain or when it is cold out then yea my shield fogs up (even with the snaps undone). But o well...its a nice looking helmet and something I will just save for the summer days.

Cisco726
01-13-2015, 12:02 PM
Would drilling some small holes in it be feasible? I'm thinking a few small holes up top so the air flows through? It would suck that you couldn't close it, but it would clear out the fog.

seaking
01-13-2015, 12:26 PM
Cisco that's a good idea, I'll small really sharp bit and try it on that shield where it meets the trim. It sucks anyway, might at well try it instead of throwing it out. Moisture always hangs out right by my nose/ eyes, I bet if I put one in the middle bottom of the shield it would work ok.

Ruckus I'm being a drama queen, it's nice and I'll still wear it in summer with glasses. But that blast shield is useless [dangerous] 10 even 12 months out of the year, and in the cold is when I really need it. Even in July/August it fogs up in the morning, so I just leave it in the garage. It be my luck to get creamed on my way to work.

My chin sticks out as well, and I remember this shit when they were talking about why the 3/4 helmets looked goofy. It's because DOT requires full foam thickness even on the top of the head. I don't think biltwell accommodated for that when they made the outer shell. The gringo isn't that bad, but I still have to pull it down, and I hate that shit. Then your chin strap is off, and you've got one hand on the bars dicking with your helmet at 80mph.

Nope, I got the XL just so that it wouldn't (My head measured on the border between the L and XL) and it still sticks out. Maybe I was wrong, and should've bought the large since they step the size up after medium, the large would be less foam?? I don't remember. I do know that DOT mandates the same thickness foam regardless of location, and you can notice it in the new model full face helmets just as much as the 3/4s that make everyone look like gazoo.

Look at this vintage bell, I'm assuming they didn't have foam stacked like DOT requires now. This is the only photo I could find of the old style:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-poNNc9DOBu4/USu3viIuNqI/AAAAAAAAbNw/EFbOqdy5S2A/s1600/Sideburn+Ace+Cafe+2013+Maxwell.jpg

And here is the new bell vintage and gringo for comparison. Notice the thicker foam on both on the top of the head. The old style above covers the entire face.

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/Jftl8Nbz7-4/maxresdefault.jpg

They need to add an inch to the bottom for sure, that's where I'd like to see it at least. And I don't think it'd change styling.

here's the gringo:

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/PumGUrBPMGc/maxresdefault.jpg

It's not THAT bad but you can see what I'm talking about. My chin is sticking out all the time if I don't pull it down. I'm not up on the old bell designs but this looks like a 3rd generation, the tourstar:

https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1394/1322773616_41fda7fce5_z.jpg

It covers your WHOLE head. The new style gringo and bell BOTH look like they constructed the outer shell, forgot the DOT mandates full thickness, and said fuck it and still ran production. I also have some other things to say, but I'll keep my mouth shut for now.

Look closely at that last pic compared to the Gringo pic. The Bell is pulled down to the eyebrows. The Gringo is a ways above the eyebrows.

If you're talking about the Blast Shield fogging up I used some anti-fogging spray we have at work for sanitation goggles. The sanitation crew works around a lot of steam and their goggles would fog up quick so we got them this spray and after I put it on my Blast shield on my Gringo it wouldn't fog up no matter how hard I tried to breath hot air towards it. And this was in cold, fog, and rain. I don't remember what its called but I'm sure if you google anti-fog spray you'll find something that'd work.

Helmet painting question: I got a killer Shoei X-11 that is the most comfortable thing ever....but, it also has this fucking horribly ugly graphics set up from the factory. It's got that Ben Bostrom job that looks like a red bull can with flames. An absolutely wonderfully made helmet but just goofy looking as shit. Now here is the question, can someone please direct me to a painter they can recommend in the So-Cal OC/LA area that would do a fine job of re-painting this lid? I know of the typical big names but I don't want to spend a ton of money and not looking for a super elaborate set up. Just want someone who can do a clean competent job for a reasonable price within a realistic timeframe. Newer helmets aren't simple as the Biltwell's and vintage stuff so I would like to find a painter that knows how to strip off the vents and stuff to make a clean paint job. If one or some of you could steer me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Just picked up a Biltwell Bonanza and a bubble shield. This is when I realized I'm claustrophobic. I have an old Nolan modular helmet that I sometimes use, but the shield flips up. Picked up a clear flip-up bubble shield from Dime City thinking I could swap back and forth between the Biltwell yellow bubble or the clear Dime City. I was wrong. The Dime City shield is riveted to the flip up adapter. I've seen the cheap adapters on eBay that ship from Taiwan or wherever, but I need one sooner than that. Can anybody point me at a decent flip-up adapter for a decent price?

Got my Biltwell Gringo a few days ago. Love it so much more than my Bell open face. Size large fit me nice, I was wearing a size large in the Bell too, but now that I've worn the Gringo I think the Bell was a bit loose on my head. The large Gringo fit me better and less bobbleheady. it's super lightweight, and seems to be made decently. I just like the fact that it doesn't lift in the wind like an open face can.

Last time I looked on their site, the Spaceman helmet or whatever it's called is sold out. It's also about $330 before shipping. Maybe I'm the only one here who thought it was weird enough to actually buy, but $330 plus shipping is hard to justify for a novelty (in more ways than one). I like strange things though, and this is pretty damn unique. Leave it to the scene in Japan.

I've been rolling with a Licks novdot for about a year and it's looking rough. I have the matte silver and the outer layer of clear whatever is looking like shit especially on top. It has rubbed through and turned into a gummy, sticky, nasty mess that attracts dog and cat hair. It adds a lot of character but one of the chin straps is going to shit too, not the nylon strap that actually holds the helmet on your head but the softer stuff that goes between that strap and your jaw.

The local shop carries Daytona and I picked one up but I like the Licks better. I'll probably just order a new Novdot even though Licks never sent the t-shirt that I ordered last year with the helmet.

I'm going to sand it down and paint it.

I recently picked up a brand new swap meet display model Gringo really cheap (60 bucks). It's the orange and black spectrum model, and it is a pretty sharp looking lid at ten feet. Unfortunately, it's a piece of Taiwan garbage, flimsy as all hell. It's also poorly finished, the chrome trim doesn't line up and the paint is awful thin. I started out with novelty skid lids and a 1975 3/4 bell and to me, this helmet is in the same class, I would not want to test it in a collision. I run a Shoei RF1100 when I feel like keeping my face in one piece, and I still believe a legitimate street bike helmet is the only "safe" way to go if you can sacrifice a little street credibility. So basically, my first hand experience leads me to believe these helmets are an overpriced fad. But as always, to each his own.

Same thing happened with my gringo, large is a parachute and anything above 50 and medium was hurting. Saved up for an arai which probably isn't what you're going for but its like experiencing pussy without a condom for your first time.. Not to mention it doesn't drag at all

I just got my helmet from Joe King.....Its worth every fucking penny and every fucking second I waited.

I read somewhere that the comfort of a Joe King helmet can be compared to wearing tits on your head.....I agree...its as comfy as tits.

Want one of these real bad, how did you order? How long was the wait? (3 months ago)

I've gone do his website several times but it always seems broken, maybe it's my iPad.

sorry about the delay

Last time I looked on their site, the Spaceman helmet or whatever it's called is sold out. It's also about $330 before shipping. Maybe I'm the only one here who thought it was weird enough to actually buy, but $330 plus shipping is hard to justify for a novelty (in more ways than one). I like strange things though, and this is pretty damn unique. Leave it to the scene in Japan.

Agree with you JHK...
why don't you pick up a biltwell or something and modd it like they did theirs?
The process is more or less pictured on their blog (I think).

You also can buy a DMD Racer that is ECE and fit the inner visor.

also, they have this shield for it...

Any recommendations on 3/4 helmets for people with stupid big heads like myself? I wear a 7 3/4 hat and sofar everything i have tried on other than a fullface looks stupid. According to the bitwell size chart a XXL is only for sizes 7 1/2 - 7 5/8.

Would one of the novelty ones fit? Nowhere sells the novelty ones so my only option is to buy it and return it if it dosent fit i guess.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

I ordered from his site. Just a simple gloss black helmet that was "in stock". It took 3 months.

When I get some extra $$, I am gonna order a custom painted one.

After rolling around with the TT&Co/Eternal Combustion Troop helmet and coming to terms with how badly my brain would explode inside of it I finally pulled the trigger and bought a legit DOT helmet. Got the Simpson M30 from Deadbeat Customs, and have been very stoked with it. Not too much of a bobble head effect, good visibility, very comfortable, has never fogged up on me - I do ride a ton with the visor up though. My shovel leaks a shitton of oil, picked up the nickname 'The Valdez' so we whipped up some vinyl decals to make it official:

Damn I like that, does it lift at speed? Mine leaks a qt. every month on the ground, runs fine though! I need a new lid, just did 1400 miles in a Gringo, hate it with a passion now.

I can't stand the Gringo. The chin bar reaches my bottom lip, let's not even mention my actual chin. Lifts like crazy too. I'm saving up for a Shoei RF-1200. Fits my head, adjustable pads, and a chi bar that protects my chin(go figure)

Finally went for a ride with this the other day. I haven't relined it yet BUT it fit fairly well with a hat (baseball style not a knit one) on underneath and just the styrofoam shell inside. It has a little lift but that might be cured if and when I line it.

I feel like I'm the only one here who likes the gringo haha, maybe I'm just another biltwell fanboy but it fit great, no rise even at 100+ and it breathes like no other. All that coming from a guy who shelled out the coin for a simpson Outlaw bandit only to hate it, visibility sucks and it's so god damned hot. Anyone that wants one can buy mine. Either way, I went down last Friday at about 45-50 in my gringo and slammed the whole left side of my face, I was concerned about the chin coverage too but I don't have a mark and the lid looks like I dropped it on the floor once or twice, I'd buy again even though I fuckig hated the silver trim that doesn't line up.

Daytona. I wear a 8 1/8 fitted hat and my Daytona fits great. Inexpensive too, and probably the smallest DOT 3/4 lid, or at least top 3 smallest.

here's my mini budding collection. Bell moto 4(ghetto reline job), Grant helmet w/ roth flake, Gringo, Bell 500, Licks Novdot. Does anyone know if there's any places that are still carrying the Biltwell Novelty's? I should have sprung on one when they still were selling them and now they seem to have been eradicated.

Found an Arai XD4 barely used locally for $400 as opposed to the retail which is $600. Guy babied it, even kept the peel away plastic over the visor when in storage and the cheek pads hadn't even been broken in yet. I've ridden lots of miles with all sorts of helmets from cheap no name brain buckets to HJC and Scorpion full face helmets, and pretty much everything in between, but this is my first Arai and I have to say I am extremely impressed so far.

The venting is better than any full face I've ever worn. I can ride with the visor down in the heat of the day and still get a cool comfortable breeze across my face. It's also the most form fit and comfortable helmet I've ever worn. I'm fighting a summer flu bug, so I haven't been able to test it to really high speeds or lots of miles yet, but I'm quite sure it'll do fine. I took it on a short 20 mile rip and got it up to 90mph with the visor still attached and had no issues with lift or wobble. With that said, if it does create an issue the visor is removable for highway riding.

One thing I will point out is that I have always worn a size large full face until a recent trip when I was able to hit top speed on the bike and got a lot of lift, where the chin strap tried choking me out. I then tried my wife's size small HJC, and though it was a bit too tight, it didn't lift at high speed. So I've done a lot more research and with a little help from Arai in sizing, found out I'm actually a medium. So if you plan to ride high speed, definitely consider some sizing help or at the very least don't rule out a snug fit at first, as the pads on these are super adjustable and they will be quite snug until you break them in.

i like biltwell. i got 2 gringos. i feel like biltwells run a little big. gringos at least. i have an xl icon that's tiiiight, but my xl gringos are loose and require a helmet sizer (bandanna/skully) for high speed non-parachute noose action.

helmets are good. i wear them. i got knocked out in a skid lid, but i would have been dead, or worse without it. i like my gringos. i got a chinese bell moto 3 knockoff. the snaps are too high, but it's ok.

you guys like 3 snap visors? i fuckin' love 'em.

I had an HJC fullface size medium so I order a medium Biltwell Gringo hazard orange on clearance and it was too big so I had to return for a small Biltwell Gringo Tracker red white and blue that fits perfect

I'm currently reading this review (https://yourmotobro.com/best-motorcycle-helmet/) and thinking to get one of Nitrinos full-face helmet. I ride a bike for 6 months and my first helmet proved itself to be a cheapo made of thin plastick. How do you think will Nitrinos be okay for a beginner like me? Or should I look for Shoei or something else? I think buying Bonanza is too early for me.
