I for one always feel like I'm not wearing a helmet if there's not something below my chin. I hope that's a nice wide porthole on the helmet, and that the finish is paint friendly so's I could paint a nice wide contrast stripe in the middle...

Any idea when they will be available?

Not going to promise anything, just know we're working on one. Every time I try to predict a release on something it jinxes it and it takes even longer.

Still working on details, but the eye port will be wide enough to fit traditional MX goggles in. The paint finishes will be paintable. This one is an unpainted rapid-prototype so it's flat white. That will not be a production color.

Steve, we are looking into this.

i agree, if you could get your helmets to comply with as/nz1698, you'd be falling over yourself with orders from oz for a decent 3/4 helmet, and the full face too.

Oh, and i'll grab a set of the pegs too.

Id be with that too, but I think we can both agree that is a seriously big deal for Biltwell. AS1698 is the strictest standard for motorcycle helmets in the world, exceeding US and EU standards.

Got my Outlaw the other day and took it on a good 3 1/2 hour ride through the country on a hot ass day to check it out. It's nice and comfy, gets pretty decent airflow through it. There is a bit of a whistle coming from the area where the visor pivots, but quiet. I can ride with the visor up and not get wind in my eyes. Pretty damn nice riding without all the sand and bugs blasting my face. Safer feeling too. I'd like to maybe paint it a bit, give it some personality.

Bill.

I love your current DOT 3/4 helmets and your vision for a similar vintage full face as shown.

Have you considered investigating the steps required to get your DOT helmets certified for sale in Australia and New Zealand? We have a regulation "as/nz1698" that our street legal helmets must comply to.

http://www.crash.org.au/

I understand that there may be huge hurdles, however, if it is something that you were looking to do, I'm certain that you will sell a shit load down under.

Cheers

Steve

http://inmotionphotogxs650.blogspot.com.au/

Yes we have and no it's probably not going to happen. Oz and New Zealand have crazy restrictions preventing most companies from being able to produce Australian certified helmets. We can make a helmet that passes, but there are other restrictions that prevent us from getting excited about it.

Halwade

Metal flake?.

Probably not. Reason: the flake vibe and the retro full face vibe seem ever so slightly out of synch with each other, IMHO. Billdozer and I have been scheming on this product for a couple years, and finally pulled the trigger on what is a VERY expensive mold for the outer shell last spring.

Re: colors, we're thinking something dark (black), something light (white?) and one colorway from the Big Daddy Don Garlits/Snake/Mongoose golden era of drag racing TBD. Think hugged orange, sunburst yellow, H-D 2-tone... That sort of vibe.

Why not dozens of colors like we do with our novelty lids, you ask?

Because DOT lids come in sizes, when you multiply sizes x colors you get a GIANT inventory number. There's only so much space our distributors and dealers can dedicate to retro lids, so we have to play our style and color cards pretty close to the vest.

Don't worry: a shit ton of third party painters will no doubt be slinging color on these babies when they do hit the shelves. Support the chopper underground and buy custom!

etc. how are you gonna know it's gonna do what it's supposed to do when it's called on to do it?

Halwade
07-17-2012, 8:26 AM
Australia's oppressively strict helmet safety laws have more to do with import restriction than the safety of its citizens, I'm afraid, and neither of the 2 helmet factories at our disposal have made the financial commitment required to meet Oz standards. France does something very similar with the homologation and compliance testing of Taiwan-made bicycles to protect its own flagging velocipede industry.

Sorry we can't offer 100% customer satisfaction on a global scale. There are simply too many forces beyond our control... Such as tariffs, taxes, testing and myriad other federal regulations.

Thanks for understanding.

No, there will be no novelty full face helmet from Biltwell. 99% of all the full face wearers we ride with do so because DOT helmets are safer. Novelty spec would bely that intent.

From what I've read the biltwell novelty helmets have held up in crashes plus they aren't as heavy which will cut down on the possibility of breaking your neck bc of the extra weight. Ok, then sorry if I've been a jackass, still you said not wearing a helmet saved his life...
The head is the heaviest part of the body with the weakest muscle to handle it, at speed if you go down there is good chance that the skull hit the pavement...
Then I still can't figure how not protecting that skull can save your life ?
Can you explain it better? (beside the weight of the helmet, because if that is that kind of speed that make the weight of the helmet count... then I imagine the damage on the other parts of the body if you hit anything else than foam or water while goin' down...)

It all depends on how you hit the ground. If you hit a certain way the extra weight of your helmet will put more strain on your neck causing it to break. That's the last I'm gona say on it. I don't want to jack this thread more then I already have

Picked this Arthur Fulmer up off Ebay for 40.00.
re-lined it with velvet and new foam.
fits like a glove, and isn't bobbleheadish on my pinner dome.
Can't wait to rock it this summer..

Just got my Lick's NOVDOT in the mail yesterday. Less than thrilled with it. I feel like my skate helmet is just as DOT approved as the Lick's.

PRO: Fits well, very light, very low profile.

CONS: It just doesnt seem like it would do anything for you in a crash. The shell is very flexible. Almost like rubber.

Thats just my two cents.

I posted a few months back about this helmet I bought from some seller in Tiwian for like $32 shipped. DOT rating(or so they say) and it was very comparable to my Fulmer V2. The only problem being them come in these very queer patterns but I bought it knowing I'd paint it.

Started on it a couple weeks ago but I'm redoing it. The black paint I used it just real shitty but for a first attempt it came out ok. Going to do the same thing over, just use better materials.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w25/YOUR-AD-HERE/00a170b5.jpg

Notice how the black turned all funky. I think when I taped it off to do the white striping the adhesive had a reaction with the black paint and screwed it up. At first I thought it was just adhesive residue but it won't come off, even with sanding.

It looks like shit in person. It looks exactly like what it is, tape residue. If it was a marbalized look I would've just striped a border on the scallops and cleared it as it, but it really does look like crap in person. It was an experiment and I think I can do better so I'm redoing it.

Maybe the black felt dry, but really wasn't ready for tape? I have had that happen to me.

Very possible. It was just some cheap rustoleum I had around. I let it sit for almost 36 hours but I'm guessing this high Louisiana humidity kept if from curing completely. Oh well, lesson learned.

That's the fulmer that you leafed and stripped for me. I love that helmet.

What did I miss? Or did I just not notice before ?

Nothing really spectacular... just HOK Base White with HOK silver dry pearl over it, bright flame red graphics and mixed a navy blue color to make the Kawasaki "K". Couple coats of clearcoat and it was finished.

This is the best news of my LIFE! Thanks so much for making this. I have been scouring the internet for weeks trying to find a DOT approved version of a helmet like this. I couldn't believe NO ONE makes one, WTF??

You are filling a huge gap in the motorcycle world, and you have my thanks (and will have my money, and my brothers money, and many others'.)

Black, white and orange would be great colors.

Will a flip down visor be an option??

Just curious about the fullface, seems like the Mushmans hit pretty quick maybe before Christmas? TOL gives me shit for wearing the Thulsa Doom helmet since we don't know its history and I'm starting to appreciate a fullface after going back to the 1/2 helmet and realizing how much crap is in the air that doesn't feel nice.

Ha, ha, that is some nice photoshop work. Actually we have been working on one for quite a while and it looks pretty darn close to that!

We try not to blab about new stuff until it's ready to ship, but since you asked so directly, I guess the cat's out of the bag. I'm not going to give any time estimate for delivery but we're hoping around the first of the year-ish. It'll be DOT for sure.

OK I want a couple of these.
I wear a novelty helmet and it is great but I would like a bit more protection and these would offer me what I need.
Will they come with a visor? That would be real nice or would it be something to consider in the future.

I personally would want the flat black or flat red colour.

I am moving to Australia soon and would appreciate it if you could get Australian approval for these but I suppose I can get a fancy sticker from somewhere and it would look kinda legal.

^^^^ lmao . . . here is a simple statement . . . "a DOT helmet will NEVER fit/look like a novelty lid. impossible" and if someone says licks or daytona, yes the shell might be a bit smaller but you are sacrificing quality for that look and we all know how that ends up;)

I deal with helmets every single day from 4 or 5 manufacturers. I can tell you El Fuerte rivals Fulmer and Bell in every aspect. I personally wouldn't put Daytona or Licks in the same conversation with Bell, Fulmer or Biltwell. Just my 2 cents fellas! To each his own!

i just dont get why the top of the helmet has to have the same thickness of foam as the front, sides and back. id imagine 99% of head impact is on on the sides and back. im am sure there are more impacts on the face then the top of the helmet, yet full face is not required by the DOT.

Bought a Biltwell hustler from a local bikeshop about two weeks ago and love it ! It fits great and is very comfortable. Previously I had only worn half helmets and there is no comparison. After a long ride I didn't feel beat up from wind noise. Wish I woulda bought one allot sooner. Probably won't wear a half helmet ever again.

Wanted to rave about a helmet I just got, I mainly ride with a fullface and was looking up something with a better field of view than the one I had.

Google sent to look at these Nexx helmets.

<a href="http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m211/natesdrink/?action=view&amp;current=Nexxfullface.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m211/natesdrink/Nexxfullface.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

http://www.nexx-usa.com/product.php?productid=1765&cat=43&page=1

Damm pretty pricey but I read up on the reviews and was stocked on how light they were, so I broke down and ordered one.

Just got back from about 800 miles this weekend and this thing was awsome! unreal how light this thing is!

I did not realize how much a difference not haveing all that weight of my old Helmet affected my ride.

I felt so much more comfortable and no neck pain which is what had been killing me.

anyway my 2 cent review is Spendy? Yes! glad I took a chance? Yes!!!! worth taking a look at if you get a chance.

I'm having a hard time find a pair of goggles that fit with the Hustler.

I dig this style:
http://www.amazon.com/Bikers-Choice-Aviator-Goggles-19168/dp/B000WK8GBI/ref=sr_1_28?ie=UTF8&qid=1348679149&sr=8-28&keywords=motorcycle+goggles

I bought a pair similar and they were too wide paired with the helmet.

What are you guys using?

Yeah I do sunglasses too, but when it's super windy and raining my eyes take a beating, so I'm looking for some goggles that fit.

I live in BFE Pennsylvania so there's not MC shops close by to try any on.

Try shopping online for skydiving goggles. They are designed to handle wind at high speeds from any angle. The straps typically go inside the helmet rather than around the outside.

I just got this lid. it is a new Simpson DOT. I took the visor off.

I am not sure I will keep it, just wanted to see one in person. It doesn't fit too bad and is good build quality.

I would not keep it white, of course. Flat black or grey with some stripes are in order.

Try some of the WileyX goggle glasses, they've got a retention strap, a foam gasket and on some models the lenses change out so you can replace them when they get messed up or swap to clear at night. I've been pretty happy with mine so far.

HedleyLamarr Rad helmet!

So i got home from work today, and dropped my helmet, the impact smashed off one of the rear vents, :kill: I was pretty pissed. Got inside and remembered i had some paint laying around. All better:D

Rams horn only on one side, I kinda dig the asymmetrical nature of it, though I may go back in and paint a rattlesnake tail on the other side in the same position. we will see, I'm running low on paint beer and time in the day.

Just purchased a old school Simpson helmet, I'm needing the lining. I'm debating on hellmuts but not sure if I wanna wait 12 weeks.

So I was thinking.... I have a perfectly fine biltwel helmet, anyone ever tried to swap out the lining?

You may be able to hack something together. I have purchased one of the replacement liners, and it went into my 3/4 perfectly.

The problem you will have is the cheek pads the belong in the Simpson, as the Biltwell liner doesn't have 'em. If you want the Simpson to fit correctly, you're gonna need the cheek pads.

Next, is a Biltwell novelty I bought from D-B Originals. Naturally, I dropped it onto a rock on a trip in CA. Flake started peeling away pretty bad, so I "sealed" the ding with some thooper glue. The Biltwell bubble shield is great for blasting down the interstate. 39931

I like having a full-face lid for those times when I'm riding in rain or those days when the strong winds are kicking up tons of sand and shit.

This is my Bell Revolver. I did the vinyl wrap for something different. Bugs and shit wipe off real easy with the vinyl, and I can change it whenever I want, just have to make up a design and print it out.

That's actually pretty rad. I want to get a full-face for some rainy long hauls and have no idea what to get, may go with one of those.

So far I'm a pretty big fan of the Gringo, I slapped a snap on moto visor I found on eBay a while ago and it suits the Gringo really well. Next thing I'm struggling with is eye pro. I keep jumping back and forth between my WileyX goggle glasses and an old Scott pair I had from either my paint ball playing days or when I was still snowboarding. The WileyX's work ok (better if I use the retention strap) but with the amount go sand and gravel trucks running up and down the freeway the lack of full protection is painfully annoying. The Scott's do a good job but and have great visibility but don't fit the opening as well as I'd hoped. I keep my old bubble shield in my bag just in case stuff gets really nasty but I have yet to run it on the Gringo, I'm hesitant to do so because it's from the run that had issues with the snaps (pulled the middle snap off my Hustler) and I want to avoid swapping stuff off and on as much as possible. Has anyone else tried any other combination of goggles besides the Biltwell ones on the Gringo? I'd love to get a set of goggles with photochromatic lenses.

I use a pair of the oakley flight jackets that have the air gaskets around the glasses. they work good, you can swap the lenses in about 5 seconds, and they fit really well under the Gringo. they're pretty expensive though.

I run ESS V12 goggles. They fit well over my small frame glasses and the sides snap open to vent really well. They also come with clear, tinted, and yellow lenses that interchange easily.

My backup pair are some of the bigger ESS Desert issue style. They vent pretty well too.

Just completed graphics and candies on this helmet for a three-peat client... my interpretation of the classic "Captain America" design. Now it's off to clearcoat....
