Google "fly trekker" i have it in white really nice helmet not great for cold riding because it gets alot of airflow through it. The visor and lense is removable if you want.

Yup, got mine on eBay. Good to know about the Airflow, I'll have to see how it fares when I get the bike back together.

in keeping with the thread, here's me in my OTHER eBay lid. This one was $45 SHIPPED, no shit. It's my favorite right now, "tough guy" stickers and all, hahahaha. This was riding in November.

Yes! I think the Bandit Classic 70 looks great! I've been looking for a nice old-school (but new) full face for a while. This might be it! What other options do we have in the same category?

Icon makes a hell of a helmet and gear
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/38/21437/ITEM/Icon-Airframe-CMYK-Helmet.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

and I have been looking at their pursuit gloves for texas riding they have all leather and perforated

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/2/47/304/ITEM/Icon-Womens-Pursuit-Perforated-Gloves.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

I have a pair of these gloves, and they're sick..You wouldn't think that a glove so low pro would have as much protection as it does. Plus they're super comfortable, perfect for summer.

thank you much :)

I used color rite paint and did a the factory paint match to my bike. I really wanted to try adding some lace or something fancy but was thinking that it wouldn't match my ride very well.

Google "fly trekker" i have it in white really nice helmet not great for cold riding because it gets alot of airflow through it. The visor and lense is removable if you want.

Fly makes a good helmet - been using their MX lids for a while.

If you want one of the safest helmets out there go with Shoei. One of the best lids I've ever owned. Very well vented, quite at high speeds, and, I think, the best shield. Some of the lower end full face helmets have pretty cheap shields and it will distort your view.

Are you going to want a tinted shield or gonna use sunglasses? Tinted shields are nice, until the sun goes down. Sunglasses? Try the helmet on with the glasses before you buy.

HJC makes some good full face, but they tend to be heavier. Best bet? Shoei or Arai. Spend the extra $. THe Shoei Hornet has the same look at the Fly Trekker. The Shoei is lighter, and reduces noise better. The Shoei for some reason, does not cause as much high speed buffeting(?). The visor on the Fly made my head feel like the wind was trying to rip it off. Nor som much with the Shoei..

It all depends on how much $$ you wanna spend.....Depending on the weather and how far I will be riding (and usually which bike i am taking) I go from a non DOT skid lit to a Shoer full face to the Hornet...
Price DOES matter when buying a helmet..

How many of you guys ride with non-DOT approved helmets? Have you ever been pulled over by a cop that wanted to see if your helmet was DOT approved?

Reason I ask is I have a 3/4 helmet that isn't DOT approved that I'm re-lining. I'm making the interior look like it was upholstered at the factory, and I'd be lying if I said I hadn't been thinking about pulling the "DOT Approved" tag out of my legal helmet and sewing it into the lining. I also have access to a sticker maker, so I could easily make a DOT sticker and bury it in clear coat. I just don't want to ride my cool-ass bike with a goofy-ass helmet. My dome is huge, so all the DOT 3/4 helmets make me look like a fruit.

How much trouble could I get in for faking a DOT helmet? I'd assume I wouldn't get in any more trouble than I would for wearing a "novelty" helmet, but you all know how the law is.

Thank god for the Government looking out for me :banghead:

loony
02-12-2012, 5:15 AM
The Law probably doesn't really care that much, but if you go down the road, have an accident and kill a kid, your ass will be fucked good and proper by Lawyers looking for anything wrong with you, your equipment or your bike.

up to you...

I live in a helmet state. Alot of the people I know that ride wear novelty and I haven't heard of any of them getting in trouble. Half have a fake dot sticker other half have no sticker. I'd say with a super tiny nov-1/2 you could get f-d with. They're obviously not dot from a distance and it's an easy ticket for a cop. With a nov-3/4 I don't think anyone would be the wiser.
On another note...I'm told by co-workers that my insurance won't pay out if I eat it while riding without a dot. Something to think about.

never admit anything to a cop, It's best to say you bought it that way at a swap meet and you are an innocent victim of
an unscrupulous seller.

look on Ebay, DOT stickers are cheap.

ZERO helmets are approved by the DepartmentOfTransportation. The stickers are up to the manufacturer to place. it's up to the manufacturer to deem if a helmet meets the federal standard. Sticker it up. send me a few also...

The only accident I've been in where a helment had a noticeable effect I was wearing a novelty helment. If I hadn't had it on I would have had to have a skin graft over about a third of my skull. I didn't land on my head but I did scrape the road with my lid for a good ways. I think I was largely airborne when my helment was making contact with the asphalt. One of the officers responding to the accident looked at my helment (I had put a DOT sticker on it) and said "I know you don't want to hear this but you should get a real helment. I can't legally prove you put that DOT sticker on there so I can't prove that it isn't DOT. Only a real DOT helment will help when it counts." I told him he was right, that I didn't want to hear that. That was in Daytona in '95. I don't know if the laws have changed or not. Here in Alabama (a helment state) I see plenty of novelty helments and, on rare occassion, someone completely lidless. The novelty helments never seem to get any questions.

I import these and have for a few years now over on the EC site. We're completely out and not bringing any back until they wise up and lower the cost back down. They basically doubled it and I just can't keep the price as low as I've had it over the years and can't see raising it and still be fair to my customers. Rock and hard place kinda thing.

I'm working on a solution and hopefully can bring them back to you guys soon.

The wife got me a Biltwell Hustler for V-day! She loves me, what can I say. Anyways, it's really hard to get on! I've got a pretty average head, round, mostly coverd with hair. Once the helmet is on, it's perfect, but getting my skull through the narrow opening (the part that would come down by your jaw) is like being re-born!

Anybody have this experience? Does the non-DOT biltwell helmet have the same issue??

I put mine on the floor with the opening faceing up, then I stand on top of a chair and do a sweet dive into mine. perfect everytime.

Also I bought another helmet today off of ebay for 10.45.. fuck yeah.

Pete, hold it by the straps (close to the helmet) and flex it open at the bottom as you put it on. It works, try it! The novelties don't do this, they are a lot flexier and don't come in as much on the bottom.

Pete
02-15-2012, 5:38 AM
Thanks guys! That's all pretty much what I thought. I like the swan dive approach. I think I may look into swapping it for a non-dot.

I see from all the pictures that the hustler dot helmets are a bit bigger, come down lower around your neck and jaw, but what is really the point of all that. Is the Non-DOT version different as far as the strength of the shell, padding, chin strap, etc?

ok so I picked up an old 70's gold flake helmet off ebay and its got a few scuffs and some places where stickers were and there is some of the glue left from the stickers. What is the best way to buff it out to get its shine back? Should I lightly sand it or just try to polish it or what? I just dont want to use the wrong shit and fuck it up and make it look all cloudy.

I dont know maybe put stickers on it, maybe try to do some fancy painting on it, maybe leave it the way it is and just stick it on my head, maybe just put it on a shelf in the garage and let it get dusty. My wife is always on my case cause I got a bunch of helmets and dont normally wear one.
who knows I got about nine months to figure it out though.

Sooo... Me and some mates ordered 4 full-face lids from Joe King's Speedshop. In june of last year.

He told me it would take 30 days to finish them. The guy just won't reply to my emails unless I talk shit on his Facebook page or start a Paypal dispute.

Last thing I know is he got issues with the chrome trim on full-faces and was re-designing them.

I'm a very understanding guy and I can accept the delay, I just fucking hate the fact that the guy never answers emails, while I already sent him half the money for the 4 helmets, that's $610...

Anybody experienced similar issues or already ordered a full-face from this guy?

Also I just bought another but its blue. sweet another helmet.

do you mean if they make it look like you got a big ass head? if so, yeah.

Simpson has a factory/retail store about 20 miles from my home so i was able to try one. it looked huge on me, especially with me being a skinny dude. gonna gain some mass before i purchase one.

That looks like a regular bandit for auto racing, the outlaw bandit motorcyle specific helmet looks a lot smaller than that..

No one wants to buy this helmet. Is it the lettering on the back? The helmet is awesome in person and came out perfect.

I can always sand off the numbers and do some striping.

Hey guys, as you saw, we are totally bare on Troops right now. I think the only thing I've got is a used gloss black Troop 2 (old style with smaller shell) and a gloss black MOTO with no visor. MOTO is new, but had to take the visor off for a customer long ago. Working hard to get more in, so keep checking in from time to time.

Yeah those Simpson buckets are wicked looking, I've been coveting them for a long while, but I'm not real big on full face helmets, I'll even run my crappy Bell at 4:30 in the morning when there's a light rain. BillyT
03-15-2012, 8:28 AM
Its fine as long as you are looking straight ahead. Gets a little push on it when you look to change lanes. But I'm used to it now and don't even notice it that much.

Medium fits my head perfect, but is a little tight in the cheeks. Ordered s set of large cheek pads, so that should take care of that.

SIzing is identical to the Scorpion I had, too.

Little more testing for lift issues on my ride in from work. None. I tried to make it lift by tilting my head back and never really got it to pull at all. This was going about 80.

But like I said, turning your head, it's like putting a parachute out. Myabe I should get another mirror.

Lemme talk to the guy I got mine from and see what he will sell them for. I paid *well* below retail for mine, but we are good friends. Maybe I can get a group buy together or something.

There was no pull/lift at higher speeds, and it was quite comfortable. This may be my go to helmet from now on..

Anyone see these cheap as fuck 3/4's off Ebay from Tiawan? I got this one for $2.25 plus shipping(~$32 from Tiawan). Has a DOT stamp(although I question it's legitimacy) and seems to be build similar to my Fulmer V2. Tonight I'll try to get some side by side comparison pics. Could be a decent option for someone looking for a 3/4 really cheap.

Excuse the really gay pattern, I bought it with the full intention of painting it, it seems they're only available in stupid patterns.

Could be a decent option for someone looking for a 3/4 really cheap.

Excuse the really gay pattern, I bought it with the full intention of painting it, it seems they're only available in stupid patterns.

Question - how low is the profile on those? Do ya look like a Spaceball with it on?

I'll try to get some good pics of everything tonight. It's a DOT approved helmet, or atleast it's supposed to be so it sits higher than any of the Biltwell or other Non DOT 3/4's that I've seen but still not too bad.

Here's their Ebay store.

Here's a few pics side by side next to my Fulmer V2. I didn't get any pics with it on my head though.

It seems to be of decent quaility and the padding is just as thick as my Fulmer. As far as bulkiness it appears to be a little smaller than my Fulmer and it seems a little lighter too. In the shield of the night I put it on hoping no one would see me and went out for a ride with it and it did fine. No lift or buffetting. Only negative I noticed was there was a slight wind noise that I don't get with the Fulmer but for the cost it's hard to complain. Sizing seems to be correct as well, both are XLs and fit the same.

Anyone have any info on those Chinese eBay helmets linked above? They have a vintage one that looks closer to the troop helmets and the alien looks cool as well. Of course I'd rather a troop helmet but it seems those are going to be unavailable for a while. I'm not too concerned with dot rating, anythings better than just my hair and skull protecting my brain.

The company is Chern Yueh, and they sent me a bunch of samples last year trying to get us to start carrying the "vintage" lineup and their Simpson-style DOT. The DOT fullface was crap. I wore it once for about 50 miles and tossed it in a pile. Visor won't stay up and blows up when it's supposed to stay down at speed. Cheap mechanism on it. Padding came out after the one ride and was loose. Strange sizing like all Asian lids, and kept moving it around while riding as it would get uncomfortable after a while.

The 3/4 lids weren't much better. The DOT style had pretty stiff padding and were big balloons, but I'm biased and don't care for DOT 3/4 in the first place.

The "vintage" fullface MOTO style and another that looked like a Bell star were crappy too. Everything just done cheaply and they didn't seem like they were interested in making it better quality.

A lot of people will dig that price. Dirt cheap for dirt product.

Man, I would love to see someone come out with something with the styling of the Troop helmets, but DOT. I bought a Troop face mask for my 3/4, but hell, if you're wearing a helmet for safety, might as well go all the way. I guess the Simpson Bandit is the closest thing out there, but damn they're expensive, especially when I'm just gonna remove the visor and wear it with goggles anyway. It seems to me that a similarly styled helmet could be produced a little cheaper if it was designed without a visor.

I fully agree, the need is there and I sure hope someone sees that and starts to make some. I too really love the Simpson Bandit and yes I know my life is worth the price tag but still doesnt mean i have the $$ to save my life. those cheap Chinese ebay helmets have the right look but I dont like what Craze said and I fully believe his review/opinion.

Ahhhh, that's what I thought, I mean they are cheap but if it's just going to fall apart then there really is no point. I like the bandit outlaw but they are expensive and still are a little big, granted they are DOT but I'd much rather a troop or something like it. Someone should make another troop style quality helmet or get the actual troops back over here in the states. If anyone has a troop 1 or 2 lying around in a md/lg any color, pm me and I'll buy it.

Got my helmet from member, Aarong... Was debating a full face or not, and I'm glad I went with the Simpson.
To help alleviate some discretion about the overall size of the Simpson Outlaw Bandit I took some comparison pictures to a HJC Vader full face helmet. Both are size Medium, although I usually wear a Large in most brands.

The view opening with the Simpson is not nearly as bad as most make it out to be. I think the majority of the comments towards these helmets come from those who have experienced the older style Simpson Bandit helmet intended for auto drag racing.

The Simpson is a little heavier, but so it should because the HJC is Carbon Fibre. But the weight difference is not substantial.

As for an an on-road comparison I haven't had the chance to take the Simpson on the Highway, I expect some windnoise by looking at the shield construction, but thats the price for looking sinister I guess.

Any tips for making a helmet fit better? I just bought a NOS motocross helmet, and I'm not gonna put any money on it fitting correctly when it gets to my door. My dome is huge. I wear a 7 3/4 hat, but my head is shaped kind of weird I guess. The brain bucket is an XL, which is typically a 7 3/4 or 62cm. Can I like, lightly crush the styrafoam in certain areas for a more custom fit to my noggin with a baseball or something?

Here's the only other pic, I took it today as I just got my smoked lens.

I love this lid, super comfy, awesome in the rain and has great ventilation. Not to mention it looks fucking badass. It's the first full face I've ever worn, aside from a bubble shield and honestly, I don't think I'll ever NOT ride with one again. I had an open, on/off road helmet before this and it's completely different. I'd say if you haven't worn a helmet like this, buy a cheap one from eBay (You can get them for under $50 shipped) and try it out before making a jump to an expensive one.

I STOLE this thing for $200 shipped from eBay. Dennis Kirk had it as damaged (Scratch on the lens) but it took a while before I could find the "damage". Fortunately for me, I think it scared away a lot of bidders. I wouldn't have cared if it was cracked as I planned on getting a smoked lens anyhow.

I thought the same thing, till I started riding with my FOX V3 MX helmet. Super quite. No wind buffeting. There is actually less buffeting than with ANY of my full face lids.

The one above looks nice. The Fly Trekker is the cheap one for a reason...Shoei's is really nice, it's the Hornet. I like the blacked out looks of that ICON though.

That helmet really needs a scary face painted on it... to increase the intimidation factor just a little more.

I like my Icon. Sucks to wear when it's hot, but that goes for any full face I guess...

And I love the gold shield, but can't wear it at night. Will prolly end up with a smoked one too... or chuck the cool guy thing altogether and just run the clear that came with it.

Think I'm going to go with the Simpson Outlaw Bandit. Does anyone else have any more pics?? Just curious as to who has one that has painted/modified theirs. I'll probably be putting headphones/bluetooth in mine.

Did you see my previous post?

----> Got my helmet from member, Aarong...

Since then I've put many miles on with the simpson, and actually havent wore my 3/4 since I got it. I love not being blasted with bugs in the face and fighting helmet lift on the hwy. It was a solid purchase, definitely no regrets... plus the looks I get from others is awesome!

I'm not sure why this isn't on the market yet. I wish Biltwell or anyone would make a decent looking full face (DOT would be great) helmet. I know OldGold has one, but the face part is so thin/narrow it might as well be a 3/4. I'm tired of searching through ebay and craigslist. If you do find a decent vintage full face, they usually go for way too much $. I photoshopped a Biltwell helmet to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Ha, ha, that is some nice photoshop work. Actually we have been working on one for quite a while and it looks pretty darn close to that!

We try not to blab about new stuff until it's ready to ship, but since you asked so directly, I guess the cat's out of the bag. I'm not going to give any time estimate for delivery but we're hoping around the first of the year-ish. It'll be DOT for sure.

I love your current DOT 3/4 helmets and your vision for a similar vintage full face as shown.

Have you considered investigating the steps required to get your DOT helmets certified for sale in Australia and New Zealand? We have a regulation "as/nz1698" that our street legal helmets must comply to.

I understand that there may be huge hurdles, however, if it is something that you were looking to do, I'm certain that you will sell a shit load down under.
