I'm thinking of picking up one of those "rockhard classic" helmets, anyone have a picture of one on? I know there will be the "bobble head" effect, but just wanna know how bad.

I've been wearing a HCI-20 for a couple years now, slim fit for a DOT helmet. Just looked at a HCI-10 which has an even smaller profile and I think I'll be getting one soon. Not a lot of choices as far as color, but if you going to customize it, that's not a problem. They range from 69.00 to 89.00, not bad for a dot lid.

I received my licks nov dot today, also noticed that there have been a couple people asking about the rockhard helmets too. So I took some pics so people can compare and I guess ill give a little review of the helmets too. Being in the military i have been searching for a good low dot helmet for a while that fits me well so if i get in a serious wreck the military will still pay my bill. Otherwise is would always use a biltwell original.
First off the licks nov dot is a great helmet. Its super light it actually is low profile and i rode in it today and it feels pretty good on the road too.

Licks NOV DOT

Next the Rockhard is lower than a fulmer V2 and also comfortable. It looks good but is the heaviest helmet of the ones in this review.

Rockhard

My Buco after putting thicker Ear foam. It can pass for a Dot and has protection also low profile.
Its my favorite personally.

The motoflakes are low, light but don't fit my narrow face the best. Nice helmet though. Not the best color choices though.

Motoflake

The Biltwell Hustler is an all around great helmet except for the size. I think it looks the most bobbly on me. It is the best quality and the most comfortable helmet though. Keeps road noise out very well too.

Dude, I have one for sale right here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200585797649).

I love the damn thing, much more than my Fulmer V2, but I'm selling both and spending the money on another vintage AF40.

I have heard that a few times about paint affecting the shell of a helmet. . . personally I think it is bullshit. If paint makes a helmet weak, what the hell will pavement do to it??? I know helmet manufacturers are not using special paint for helmets. Urethane paint is used on the cheapest of scooter plastics, sportbikes, etc.

I think on some of the early fiberglass helmets people would clean them with acetone and they would get gummy.

All right, I got the helmet a few day's ago and It works good. A little tight in the cheeks (I got an XL) but other then that and a hot spot on the forehead the Helmet was worth the dough... I got a feeling both the cheeks and the forehead squeeze will go away once the liner gets washed and broken in. The face shield is sturdy and closes tight when put down. Both the visor and the shield are removable and reassemble is easily done. Oh, and little wobble on the highway, I got going 80MPH with it and no lift, No drag, just quite fun!

For those of you with bubble shields, how strong would you say they are? Do you think they'll shatter, or are there some that are "shatter-proof." I'm starting to conclude that looking cool is more important than safety. haha

I've dropped my bubble shield a few times, it's gotten scuffed, but never cracked. It's great on the highway, no bugs, rocks, dirt, sand, salt, or flung cigarettes in the old food hole.
http://www.chopcult.com/uploads_user/8000/7551/45749.jpg
That's actually a pic of my old shield, that flew off on the BQE one rainy night. (Lesson learned: Always carry a spare set of glasses.)

I had a bubble from Justified Defiance that took a shit ton of abuse. Even got pegged in the shield by a rock or something that got chucked my way while flying down I-91 by a truck. Got a nice scrape from it but no crack or anything. It finally broke when i was removing it from my lid. It was on there tight and when I pulled it snapped.

Buco M, Motoflake M,

Like shit I assume. That's why there novelty after all. i think at best it will protect you from road rash, but probably not against any sort of direct impact. Just remember though that even a DOT helmet will only protect you in collisions up to 35 mph. Anything over that and it doesn't matter what's on your head.

Before the hemet laws! My brother was doing a 120 mph on a gsxr, Hit the back of a jeep! flew 200 feet,Bounced on his head six times, cardiac arrest, and his girlfriends aunt who had been nearby ,witness'd the accident! Not aware of who it was!given him mouth to mouth! Brought him back to life, went back into cardiac arrest! he was dead on the scene!came back to,in ambulance and again in hospital, all in all died three times! and is still alive today! Not wearing a helmet saved his life!the doctors said that he would've been paralized from the neck down had he'd been wearing a helmet!took over one year for him to learn how to walk again!just thought i would share this story

They appear to be available to buy on his website and you will probably get a quick response if you email asking how much for what you want but after you send deposit or payment in full God only knows when and if you will receive it or even an email response for that matter! So I got my lick's novdot matte silver helmet the other day. It is my first DOT 3/4 helmet. It it a large when I normally wear a medium, but it fits great. It still has the martian bobble head look but it is not as bad as I expected. It is jut a tad bigger in size than my biltwell novelty helmet I have. As for comfort it is not bad but there is not too mucj padding to be honest. You can easily feal the hard safety foam. My biltwell novelty is way more comfortable but the novdot is not bad. I have yet to go for a ride with it but when I do I will report back.

Ps fyi, my vintage bubble I bought a few years back from lowbrow for my biltwell lid does not fit my novdot helmet, the snaps on the helmet are too close.

I pre-ordered one from Lick's. They look like they would be comfortable. Sucks to hear that it's not the most comfortable. Maybe it needs to break in a little?

anyone know any full face helmets that dont look huge on smaller bodies? (145-150lbs) my shoei rf1100, while fits well, looks absolutely big on me.

or am i just gonna have to hit the gym?

If you're looking for a DOT lid, as far as I'm concerned, they're all huge. It'll be a good workout for your neck haha.

I just ordered a Joe King from Dime City Store. Anyone dealt with these guys before. After reading a few post on here I may have paid a bit too much through them. Not sure though.

Ordered from those guys quite a bit. Good fellas. Can't comment on the helmet price though...

Round faces definitely don't look as goofy as other face types. I have a narrow face so they pretty much all look dumb on me. Oh well- at least it won't hurt as bad when I hit the ground.

Craze, maybe I'm mistaken but I swear I saw a custom relined TT&Co Moto helmet somewhere online. Have you seen it? If so, can you shoot the link or post them on here?

Also, anyone got a Bell Moto 3 and TT&Co Moto helmet?....comparison pics maybe? I plan to pick up a TT&Co Moto helmet soon and a Bell Moto 3 later if I can ever find one for a good deal.

Hand formed fiberglass from his own molds. These are hand made helmets hence the insane quality and higher than average price.

Hey man, we get Rene over at Primo to do some for us from time to time. Lately, we've been doing them single-color to make a "small" size for the petit domed crowd, but he can do anything. If you're interested, hit me up and we'll price it out for you.

First off, I've always pretty much detested helmets. Living in SC, it's a "choice" state to wear one or not. I usually choose not. However, living 10 miles from the NC line where helmets are mandatory, I pretty much have to have one on hand as I frequently journey up into NC. Through the years, I have tried numerous helmets and disliked each and every one of them. With that said, I recently received my new Licks nov/dot satin black helmet. Weighing in at a mere 1.85 pounds, I must honestly say that this is the lightest, most comfortable helmet I ever wore. I gave it a road test up to 90 mph and the low, sleek design creates VERY LITTLE DRAG and NO chin strap discomfort. You hardly know that you have it on. I am very pleased with this helmet and HIGHLY RECOMMEND it. In fact, it's so comfortable, I think I may just wear it full time. If you HAVE to wear a helmet and want the comfort of a novelty lid that is DOT approved, this is THE one to have. (disregard ugly model in photo) happy.gif

I got my licks nov/dot the other day. It's ok... i went with the size chart and it still feels a little loose and when i tighten it i have so much extra strap that i think im going to cut the excess. And it's not as comfy as i would think it would have been. you can really feel that hard foam. I just feel like the padding is a little on the weak side. I went to grab the helmet and the neck pad slipped off. ill give it a 7 out of 10.(me being in a good mood) other then that the shipping was quick. got mine in a few days so im guessing they are back to speed.

anyways whats the best bubble shield??? i see all this fulmer talk but when i go on there website i cant find it.

i picked one up as a xmas present from the wife. build quality and great and it's super sharp looking. doesn't ride "too high" on the dome. i picked up a large after using their size chart online and seeing that i fell right in the middle. it definitely fits a little tight but i honestly haven't used it that much so maybe it just needs to be worn more/ broken in?

I tried a Custom 500, a Fulmer, and a Biltwell before my last helmet purchase. I went with the Biltwell.

The fulmer was pretty martian like on my noggin. The 500 is a great helmet and the only reason I chose against it was because of the color choices at the time. But I really like some of the new "Skratch" designs. I ended up with the Biltwell and really the only diff. is that the Biltwell is cut a little lower in the ear area. Love it.

I think it all boils down to the shape of your head, but yeah, I've owned all three, and I thought the Biltwell fit my head way better than the Custom 500 and Fulmer. The Bell looked great until I put it on my head, but sat way too high. The Fulmer fit great, except for the huge gap between the back of my neck and the bottom of the helmet.

The Biltwell Hustler fit like a glove. Love it. Wear mine all the time.

*when i tighten it i have so much extra strap that i think im going to cut the excess*

Yep, that's why they put a snap on the end of the strap, to button the excess back to the strap thus preventing any flapping. Another great feature on the Licks Nov/Dot! Excess strap length always beat me to death with other helmets.

I think there's too much conflict between the matte base and the gloss panels. Cover the lot in clear coat and it'd look a lot better (imho).

The pinstriping looks too delicate on the surface of the matte grey, I think

Since the professionals sell their stuff here, I didn't want to throw any mediocre helmets on here. Some of my helmets are definately CC worthy, was not sure about this one. If I were to ask for a price, I usually go for 50-80 depending on the amount of detail.

I was wondering something similar, except my thought was: yeah you might get lucky and not rub your face across the pavement, but if you did the novelty or hustler aren't going to do much. So is the hustler really that much better other than it is legal and will provide head protection?

Picked up a matte black licks novdot a while back, looked small on the website and a plus that it was dot approved. But it still makes me look like i'm a space cadet...

My problem is my head is not really small, just narrow... So I sized for the large, fits nice and is comfortable, but I just cant get past the look.

What is the smallest 3/4 helmet out there? DOT or not... I'll just put a sticker on the back to keep the law happy..

Preferably if someone has personal experience or pictures for reference would be even better.

I found this TT&CO jet model, looks alright, but no info on it???

The biltwell novelty fit me inside and was comfy but I looked like a spaceball.

I went with a small daytona. The shell itself is actually smaller. The I carefully cut 2 stitches and scooped out some styrofoam from the top and then used a rounded solid steel rod to further pack and smooth the styrofoam. Then just glue the top pad back in. It sits fairly low and I feel better about it. I could probably do a bit more but it works.

I have no issues with my Daytona as far as quality. DOT approved (at least till I got it). Close side profile fit. It sat high which was why I scooped the styrofoam. Strap and padding has held up well. Had it since 2008 and it's seen plenty of weather and is still holding up. I think it was $80.

12-28-2011, 7:14 AM
Allow me to piss everyone off...I found an old silver metal flake Fulmer that was in pristine condition. Now, I'm going have to redo the liner because the liner is breaking down and I get the "crumbs" all over my head. I don't rock it much yet, but the time is coming. I got it for seven bucks on craigslist.

I do wear my other lid that I found at my neighbors garage sale. I thought I saw a blue mirror gazing ball sitting in the grass, and upon closer inspection, noticed that it was a blue metal flake helmet. I ran across the street as soon as I realized what it was. I asked what they were asking, and she told me 3 dollars! Now, I'm not sure if it is a motorcycle helmet. It might be a snow mobile helmet? I don't know what it is. My neighbor thought I was buying to be silly, and she can't believe I wear it everytime I ride. There aren't any stickers anywhere, and the size is nowhere to be found. I guess it doesn't matter what it is, cause it fits me perfectly.

So, for less than 10 bucks, I found two great vintage lids that looked brand new when I found them.

My point is, there are some good cheap helmets out there, buy you have to find them. Ebay has them, but since anyone can bid on them, the price can get a bit spendy. I also hate buying helmets and jackets on the web. I like to find a good fit before I spend money on it. Craigslist and garage sales are great because the majority of the people shopping there don't even think twice about buying them. That means the price is usually low.

I did find another cool old helmet with a cool visor (not a bubble visor) on my local craigslist for 25 bucks, but the liner was in really bad shape. The shell was very flimsy and thin, and it was the same color as my blue helmet. I almost offered him 10 bucks for it, but I saw an old sticker on it that said he paid 45 bucks for it. I told him that I didn't think I was interested and didn't want to insult him with a really low price, and he didn't come back and say that he would entertain offers. So, to make a long story longer, I left without it. I bet it's still available, so I'll see if I can find the link. I'll go pick it up and ship it to you if you're interested. It fit me nice and snug, and I measure around a size large as well. There is very little padding inside, so it has a really slim profile. In fact, if you don't want the visor, I'll buy the helmet for $25 and sell it to you without the visor for $15! Let me know.

I wear the TT & co jet. I swear by it. By far the slimmest helmet out there. Imagine this, the helmet is a fiberglass shell about an 1/8th of an inch thick. The liner is about a half an inch thick around the ears. The top is even thinner. It's most definetly a novelty but if your serious about not looking like Marvin the Martian do yerself a favor and get the jet. Jason craze over at eternal combustion will hook you up. He's one of us. Matter of fact he just had his panhead in a recent chopper rag. Hope this helped

Anything TT&Co is going to be slim and very streamlined., I just recently got a Troop and it fits extremely close to your head. I am going to buy a Jet next. You can go on TT&Co's website and check out their other helmets (and crazy sportster seats), but it is hard to navigate with my western eyes. If Craze still has some on his EC site, I would get one quick.

Joe King. Eh.

And has been said before...vintage helmets are VERY small and fit close to your head. Look for ones with a 66 or 68 year designation. The 72-73 year designations were the beginning of DOT compliancy and gained in size.

hutchings

Been talking with craze from EC... "I've got a few left in black, flat black and white. I can do a medium liner on the top for you, but the ear pieces I have are all large."

Makes me wonder if the shells are the same size, just different sized liners...

Scbiker1 any pics of the lid? What is your head measurement, and what size lid do you have?

Bigdaddy, thanks for the input, i just remembered I think i have an old 70's snowmobile lid or two back home in my fathers garage, if he hasnt tossed them yet. I'll have to look into that!

I've been using a Daytona for the last two years. Size medium. It's always been a little loose unless I wear a baseball hat under it. Doesn't matter around the city, but pulls up on the highway. Just got s small for Xmas this year. Duno if they changed the sizing, but it's wasaay smaller than the medium. Not just tight, but the shell itself is a lot smaller. Almost looks too small on my head. Think I might just have a weird shaped head though. Tall and skinny.

Other than that, the helmet seems fine. Cheap price, quality made. Not very soft on the inside, but that's the trade off for small size and dot.

I want a Builtwell I just never feel like paying for one.

I always wondered the same thing. I'm built the same and got a loser from Skatepark of Tampa. After two years or so I still love my loser helmet but wanted the flashy orange biltwell nov, so I have both. The loser sits a little lower and is more narrow. And they have the sick liners. The two are about te same on weight and both feel pretty solid. Overall the loser is by far a better helmet.
Obey did just buy out loser machine and they had just promo-ed out all of the one still in stock. I have heard that they were going to a new factory and were planning on producing Loser Machine DOT knuckleheads.
If you can get your hands on a loser helmet, dig out the extra few bucks. You won't be disappointed and your lid will stand out in a sea of biltwells.

I guess that explains the new Loser website then?

Got my TT&Co Jet 3/4 in the mail yesterday from Eternal Combustion.

Stoked at how low profile it is, no doubt its a non-Dot, but I finally don't look like I'm on the way to the moon. It sits real low on the head too.

Overall, it looks pretty good, lightweight, removable liners/ear pieces, goggle strap, etc...

Again, I'm comparing this to the licks NovDot...

I don't think craze is getting anymore of these in, prices got jacked from Japan.... Get one while you can!

I wear an NFX youth size medium helmet. They make the classic Bell style lid. It's DOT and I can snap all the nifty visors and bubble shields to it, just like the bell. And they are CHEAP. $50.00 tops.

I got one from him about two weeks ago. It really is one of the smallest helmets I've ever worn. And Craze hooked it up again with all my questions and shipped it quick. He's a solid guy.

So many people get put on blast online for bad business deals, Craze needs to hooked up for his good dealings.

My bike is almost done! I haven't ridden in about 10 years and was in a motorcycle accident not to long back, so I'm looking for a helmet but I want a full face. I like the style of Biltwell but can't seem to find one on their site that is full face. Can you guys point me in the right direction? One of my friends sent to me a site but the helmets looked like Darth Vader. I'm a chick I don't want a super manly helmet. Also, any suggestions for the best gloves? I'm going back into this with full gear. :)

That one looks a lot better than the ones my friend sent me, thanks! I still would like to see some option in full face that are more vintage style looking like the old Buco or Bell helmets. Do they make something like that DOT?

this one I know isnt I have an OLD ass helmet my girlfriends dad gave me that looks like a legoman head with just a little stretch at the mouth your looking for something like that?

I bought a Mini moto 3 helmet at a thrift store so if you have a biker friendly area might find some old stuff there too

if you wear an extra small this would be a great price on a bell lol

Yeah like a legoman head! haha I didn't think of them like that, but yes.

Is being DOT approved a big concern? What I mean by that are some helmets just as safe as something that is not approved by DOT? And are there regulations from state to state which require you to have a DOT helmet?

I'm really fresh to this biking thing again, so I apologize if my questions seem to be dumb. I'll be taking the safety course but not until I get back from vacation.

we don't have to have a helmet law in Texas...So you can ride DOT or non DOT. A couple of guys have gone down with Biltwells on and lived to tell the tale.

If you really want something safe, though, get a legit modern full face The difference between riding in a new full face over an old one is night and day.

Spade115

I agree with T, one of the many reason I am happy im in Tx :D

If you want a fullface get a good bell, Great helmets can bet picked up at a well enough price.

Bell
AFX (I like these personally)
Speed and Strength
Spar X
Icon

But depending on why you wear it and what you want will really depend on what you purchase. The legoman helmet I used to take the course I dont think I would ever really do some long miles with it. and the 3/4 I have done some heavy riding but I dont wear mine ever really so it was the best 30 bucks I spend DOT lol

Would you guys say the 3/4 Jet helmets from Eternal Combustion are smaller (less Great Gazoo) than the Biltwell non-DOTs?

Also, what size did you guys get? All I see left in white are M/L.

I think they are in the $170 range now... Has an air pump to make the thing keep fitting as it breaks in.

$135 shipped ain't too shabby either. The face shield goes up, under the brim so it's almost completely un-noticeable. I have one similar now, without the shield and I really dig it but want something for the cold New England weather.

Totally getting those gloves! Thank you! The accident I was in earlier this year really tore up my hand, it put me out of work for three months, I'm a piercer by trade so not having a hand to work with left me completely helpless for a while, can't go through that again!

bb gun and a scope you should be able to peirce an ear at distance :P

No prob Remember if you have a passanger ride with you they need a helmet unless they have a 10,000 dollar insurace just incase you wreck.

Thanks man, it's stuff like this that keeps me going!

As for what's left in stock, I've got both white and flat black in the 3/4 lids. Only XL/XXL are left, but folks have been getting somebody to reline them if the size isn't right. They are by far the smallest shell on the market.

hutchings
01-20-2012, 4:51 PM
I personally can't compare it to the biltwell novelty, my only other 3/4 is a licks novdot. It has a way smaller profile than that, and sits really low on your head.

The shell is the same for both sizes, it just has different removable liners with a different thickness.

I have a large novdot, my head is kind of a funny shape, narrow but long. The tt&co M/L fits me like a glove.

As for crazes customer service, its top notch, definitely willing to do what it takes to make you happy.
Highly recommended!

Google "fly trekker" i have it in white really nice helmet not great for cold riding because it gets alot of airflow through it. The visor and lense is removable if you want.
