Around here I think the shorter list would be "Who doesn't wear a Biltwell lid?"

My buddy got hit on Wednesday. That helmet saved him from head trauma. His chin and upper lip were fucked and he's got a nice road rash spot on his cheek(Could happen with anything other than a full face helmet),but he's alive. So I say they hold up pretty well. The doctor stitched him up,but like I said,he had no head trauma and he was conscious the whole time.

If you're worried about D.O.T. certified with Biltwell looks, check out Motoflake which is from the guys at Justified Defiance,or Rockhard helmets. Both are DOT certified.

Hooligan has pointed out some good looking DOT helmets. However, until there is a breakthrough in safety foam they are still going to sit about an inch higher than a novelty Biltwell helmet.

Just finished reading every single post in this thread. Over 1000 posts, only took about 3 days. (Good thing I'm out hurt from work)
Decided to scrap my flat tracker pudding bowl and dust off my Fulmer V2 for safety's sake.
I've got the Blue metalflake, think I might paint it black and just leave around the edges flaked, can anyone suggest the best plan of attack for it?

My manky lid, the cell phone phots hide most of the huge bubbels in the stickers, as I can never apply stickers to a curved surface very well. Made by cromwell in the UK, sadly they ceased production of it.

HAHA! We're the distributor for their helmets in the states and we just didn't get this one at first. It's patterned after the Lawman series of Anime over there, if you keep up with that sort of thing. If you have to have one, I can get it, but I'm not stocking these until after the apocalypse!

Does anyone of you bought any helmet from 'superior-cycle' guys on ebay? They have some $20 "never used helmets" but as they say "may show some signs of aging". In here this term means that it is worthless, beat to death piece of shit. So can they be trusted?

I would not buy the helmet, but here's something you should know. Any new old stock Buco, Bell or Fulmer helmet you might find that is 30+ years old is going to be pretty worthless when it comes to safety and is going to run you a lot more than $20. I am sure whatever lid those guys are selling is probably some unsafe NOS helmet with hardened or dust like foam as well. If you like the shape of the lid, I'd buy it and get it relined. You could be $80 all in on a helmet with a cool liner. Of course, that all depends on if the exterior is decent or not. Up to you. $20 is not a huge gamble and you could probably sell it to a friend if you don't like it.

Tito

They have certain official dealers they go through, probably for liability reasons. I'm not sure, but you may have to get them at an actual physical store, not a website. Go onto the fulmer site, and see if the have a list of dealers in your region.

Fulmer does not like for their products to be sold on the internet. I have seen some places that do but usually not for long before Fulmer makes them stop.

im pretty sure they are DOT.

PaintAnything
10-04-2010, 8:28 AM
The Fulmer AF20 and AF40 were DOT approved 30 years ago when they were made. I doubt they'd pass the current DOT standards and many say the foam on these helmets deteriorates and doesn't function as well as it would have 30 years ago.

I haven't seen any non-DOT 3/4 helmets myself so can't comment on how they compare. For safety sake I think I'd take a vintage fulmer with it's fiberglass shell and old foam over a plastic shell but there's absolutely no knowledge from me to back up why.

I can say that I went down on my bike a few years ago only wearing a non-DOT half helmet and it worked. It's got some pretty good gashes out of it that sure wouldn't have felt very good had I not had a helmet. I now where the 3/4 fulmer and keep the half helmet hung in the garage to show the kids why to wear a helmet.

Biltwell helmets have gone mainstream....

StoneHead
10-05-2010, 11:54 AM
I suppose you could drill them out and fill them in.
But I think that would violate DOT, if it's DOT to begin with.
There's some rule about modifying helmets but I'm not sure what it is or if it still is.

And leoj, don't be so cryptic.
What, was one of Biltwells helmets on house last night?

I would think painting a matte helmet wouldn't be any different than a gloss helmet. I'd prep them the same way. Only issue I can think of is I've heard of some matte helmets having a sort of rubberized finish. I haven't run across these myself though.

im rocking the flat rubber black daytona open face. I love it, but im sure a full paint makeover is out of the question. I like just flat black so im not worried about it. but i wouldnt suggest it if you want to fully customize it, i wouldnt even know where to begin to try to get it derubberized.

PaintAnything
10-06-2010, 4:18 PM
Regarding the black daytona, you may consider just getting some striping done or a design done with oneshot instead of doing a complete repaint.

There's a shop in town that sells the Fulmer V2s and while I don't like how much bigger it is than my vintage fulmer af40, the comfort and lower wind noise they offer will likely lead me to buying one soon. Flat black and some pinstripes/graphics to distract from the size.

In the mid/ late 70's BUD started branding everything. I had BUD wallpaper as a 5th grader (pretty cool parents). I remember seeing chopper jockeys running around town with BUD helmets back then. Havn't seen one in 30 years......found this in a old timers shop on a shelf a couple of months ago. He thought I was crazy for wanting it. Said "just take it, I dont want that old thing". I gave him $20 bucks outta guilt and ran out of there.:cheersmate:

Ha, ha. Loej happens to be a good friend of ours, who ironically could be a double for he actor Hugh Laurie on House.

Hugh rides a green flake Biltwell on his modern Triumph and their production guys bought a bunch from us a couple months back. They used them in the "Go Kart" scene in last week's episode. We had no idea what/when they were going to show up, if ever. Mike called and told me they were on and me and the family turned it on and caught a couple minutes of the super long scene. It was cool to see them on TV. No branding or anything of course, but if you know the lids, you would know they were ours. A lot of brands pay for placement on stuff like movies and TV which is something we'd never do but we were sure hyped to see them on there.

I shot these pics of my TV with my phone:

Biltwell DOT compared to Daytona DOT

The Biltwell is a quite a bit bigger, but it wears so so so much nicer. The Daytona feels like a bucket on my head compared to the Biltwell. At freeway speeds the Biltwell stays put... big plus.

Paint by Bluemoon, lining by Hellmutts - both were super easy to work with and overdelivered

i really do like the hustler. i want to order one up for me and the ole lady sometime (bc NE has a helmet law and i live right on the border of NE, SD, and IA) anyway I just need to figure out what size to get. i know all helmets are different and i saw your sizing chart on biltwell. i have to base it off hat size..i dont have a tailors tape in afghanistan haha. Im supposed to get some leave here in march and im really hoping to have it by then and riding everywhere for 2 weeks before i come back here! does anyone else have one that can give me some info on the fit and all that good stuff? I got a 7 3/8 hat size and a nice round melon

billdozer
01-15-2011, 4:54 PM
I'm a 7 3/8 too. I fit in a large but can also run a medium, it's just a little snug. But L should do you right. You can double check by using the sizing chart. Use a piece of 550 cord and wrap that around your grape, mark it with some talib blood (or a sharpie) and lay it out straight and measure it.

BLKMamba
01-15-2011, 5:40 PM
+1 on the Biltwell Hustler. It's a legit DOT helmet from a company that supports the scene. If I want a novelty sized helmet and didn't have my baby mama harping on me about safety I'd run a Biltwell novelty.

IMO, it's highly unlikely that huge companies like Bell and Fulmer who sell hundreds of thousands of helmets could not make a smaller DOT helmet if they had the resources to. Not to sure about any DOT helmets that have smaller shells than those two juggernauts.

No denying the Hustler is the biggest of the bunch, but, it is still the most comfy, best fitting 3/4 I have had on my head. I own a novelty Biltwell, and a Daytona, and just tried on a Bell 500, and the Hustler wins hands down. Both the Daytona and the Bell 500 just don't feel like my head is in them, they feel like they are sitting on my head. The novelty Biltwell feels right, and no doubt looks the best, but on my head, which is a large in the Hustler and Bell, and an XL in the Daytona, the Hustler just feels perfect when I'm wearing. The novelty is a tick snug, but I guess they break in over time.

BillyT
01-16-2011, 6:14 PM
Another thing too, about those shots where the helmets are all sitting on a table, the Hustler comes way further down on my face. If you were able to run a line thru where your ear sits in the helmet, then compare the sizes , the Hustler, while still being bigger, isn't as towering over the others as those types of pics would lead to you believe.

Works perfect. No wind noise, tested up to 70mph so far, no movement. I have a flat shield that works perfect this way too, after some trimming. But the bubble just slid right in like it was made to fit that way.

This is a nov Biltwell lid. Probably won't work with any DOT helmet without losing the snaps, or some other creative trimming as the foam domes are pretty tight against the shell.

I'm sure you could make it work on a DOT that the dome comes pout of pretty easily. Just lose the snaps and any trim along the top. I made a little spot on my Hustler for the visormatic to go on when it gets here, but I felt bad about doing it. Hated working that thing with a butter knife, ha ha. But I did get a little spot for at least one tab to slide into. I'll try the bubble on my Daytona as it all comes apart.

I think that is quite clever and looks cleaner than snapping on. Did you add anything to it so it goes farther inside the helmet or is it just a stock bubble with the snaps taken off. Nice work!

Right there, it still had the snaps on it. Now, the snaps are gone and I put some velcro across the top where the snaps used to be, so it sticks to the shell and the liner sticks to it. But nothing else is done to it.

But if you have a bubble that you don't wanna mess up, it works fine just stuck in there. The snaps kinda lock against the trim, too. No issues out on the freeway with it just stuck in there.

Definitely good stuff to know. I all ready wear a D.O.T. helmet and you can find some that fit all right and keep you protected. I wore a fullface the first year I had a bike and I now started wearing a 3/4. Here is what happened to me when I wasn't wearing a helmet:

As with everything in life, you get what you pay for. I have a high-quality full-face for when the road conditions aren't the best., and I have a Biltwell novelty lid for most of my riding. And with the Biltwell, I only expect the $77 worth of protection if i hit the deck with it.

I wear a DOT helmet,i dont need to get hasseled by the filth for a novelty helmet, and IF i do come off the bike, some protection is better than retardation, although im pretty close to that already!!

Make sure to notice this part of that article guys:

If the manufacturer certifies that its helmet passes the D.O.T standard, it can make and sell that helmet with a D.O.T. sticker. The division of the Department responsible for such things periodically buys helmets and sends them to independent labs for testing to assure that they actually do meet the standard.

Make sure you know the people making the helmets are reputable!

We get this question at Lowbrow daily and this is my take on it. We saw some helmets on display at VTwin (from a major manufacturer) last year and they love to display their size smalls, and yes they are smaller than everyone elses....size xl that is. To meet the DOT specs they are all pretty similar in size. Bottom line is a DOT helmet isn't going to be as small as a novelty helmet, it will protect your skull better though! Check out this review from Biltwell these are different brand helmets, all the same size, all the same person wearing them.

No need for OBAMA care. Im Canadian! I was actually in Spain when that happened though. Thankfully I spent $60 on travelers insurance. A hospital bill for 6 days in ICU and 10 total days in the hospital would have been a hefty bill.

Paulo is good people. Right now, our wonderful government has made it damn near impossible to ship into or out of this country when using small post service, which I'm sure he did. I hope that's the issue. It'll just take a while. Lately, every time we ship internationally, it takes damn near a month and a half if not longer to most places.

I'd say to hold off a little while longer before getting too heated.

I ship helmets int'l at least 2-3 times per month, usps int'l, and they get there within 3 weeks at the most. I dont know the dude personally but his product is nice. He did tell me they were not shipped from the brazilian postal due to the packaging but still, 4 MONTHS???!!! come on. If he told me that up front I would be cool with it but he didn't.

ive had a flat black 3/4 fulmer for about 6 months now and its a bit of a bobblehead compared to a novelty (obviously). its a nice fit and blocks out the noise from the wind, which is great so i can listen to my tunes through my headphones.

before the 3/4 helmet i was rocking a jockey style helmet that was too big for me and because of the little visor on it, it felt like it was trying to pull my head off when i was on the freeway.

today i got a flat black 3/4 rockhard in the mail, and honestly its pretty similar to the fulmer. its been raining all day so far so i havent gotten a chance to ride with it on but it feels a lot like the fulmer. in my opinion, the rockhard feels just a little bit less of a bobblehead than the fulmer. i showed it to a few people and theyve all said that it looks completely the same... but they arent too big on the bike thing.

the color is a bit different because the rockhard is smooth plastic that gives off a little bit of shine (which i like) while the fulmer's flat black is some kind of hard rubber that had basically zero shine. on the rockhard they printed on their "rockhard helmets" stamp on the front which is pretty ugly to me (just like how the bell 500 has BELL stamped on the front, pretty damn ugly). the fulmer just has their FULMER stamp on the back, right above the DOT.

the inside of the rockhard is a little "prettier" on the inside, but i really dont care about that since no one will see it while its on my head. the fulmer has a pretty basic liner on the inside.

so the final test will be, of course, riding with the rockhard on my head. ill have to wait till the roads dry up a bit, but so far i think ill be KEEPING THE ROCKHARD AND SELLING THE FULMER.

A LOT. Plusher lining, awesome sound blocking/protection, better fasteners and rings, etc. BUT it's also more plastic parts, no leather straps, and in my opinion a lesser quality build. Of course that's true with nearly everything anymore in Wal*Merica.

But yeah, the Fulmer V2 I bought new last summer and wore it a few times, but preferred the fit of my classic AF40. The V2 really hurt my ears taking on and off, even in size XL, but other than that I loved it.

As for the Rockhard, I'll be honest, it's a SUPER-comfy helmet with a niiiiiice plush interior and better straps and snaps than the Fulmer V2. It's fuggin' awesome, for real. The only reason I'm selling it is that again, I really like my AF40.

Do you guys think I have them priced too high? I mean, they're both nearly half-price as it is.

Does anyone have the Troop lid from Eternal Combustion? I'ma pussy and am scared off by the fact that it's not DOT. Can anyone attest to these lids being reasonably tough, or whatever it'd be considered?

What are some full-face helmets to look for that ARE DOT, but are clean and retro (or actual vintage) like the Troop?

I know there's quite a few guys on here that can give you feedback. There's also quite a few that can attest to the fact that I've got over 9000 miles on mine over the last 12 months and it's still rock solid!
Ive been wondering for a while how the TT & co. helmets fit as far as round or oval shaped heads. My head is more oval so helmets like Daytona and Bell custom 500 don't fit no matter the correct diameter. Pics on you website make the helmet seem pretty round so its kept me from getting one for a while.

Bell Moto 3

Where can you get a Moto 3 that is DOT? I'm pretty sure they're on the Moto 7 or 8 or 9 now and they aren't very "vintage" looking.

As far as the fit being round or oval, I guess I'd need to know where you're more "oval". If it's a cheek fit thing, we can have Primo reline the cheek / ear area to be more snug for sure. Just shoot us an email and we'll work with you.

That's true but he was asking for a vintage DOT.They were DOT(weren't they?) back in their day
but not really any more.Is that what you're saying?I think we're on the same page here I'm just not
feeling very articulate at the moment.

Will the troops ever become DOT, or would just just compromise the look and make 'em too big? I'll eventually get one, just need a DOT one, as I'm a total noob, and would like some reassurance that I'm not sweating my ass off in SoFla wearing a helmet that looks cool, but isn't functional... Give me about three months till I'm at that point haha.

Gotcha Beef, I think you're saying the same thing.

As for TROOPs being DOT... we'll have to wait and see. Size is a big issue, but not the end of the world as seen by the acceptance of people attracted to the DOT 3/4 lids.

DOT Approved. Fits nice and low on the head and doesn't give you the bobble head look. My cousin just painted it for me.
