Anyone know where one can get replacement shields for old Full Face lids? I got a '81 Shoei interstate Hawk and a Bell Star I'm looking for.. I've checked everywhere and yes egay as well. I even went to the local bike shop to see if there was a universal one, but they didn't have. thanks for any help or at least point me in the right direction. ride safe.

I found an Interstate shield on eBay for 15 bucks brand new - if you find someone who can make a custom shield, I'll let you use this as a template (my interstate is with bmk for paint so I'm notmusinf the face shield right now)

thanks man, i just bought a brand new (still in the plastic) shield that I thought would fit my bell star, but it doesn't. (for a Bell star 120). Never heard of anyone custom making shields?

oh.. I make sure you post that lid after BMK gets through with it....fucking love their work!..

Not a big fan of open face helmets but one of my buddies taken off for his cross country trip on his shovel bought the orange flake bell helmet last night ...I have to say it is a really nice helmet and is DOT approved thought some of you might not know about them or seen them yet ...So here ya go ...

Details:

Throwbacks and retro lids are nice, but nothing beats an original. Back in 1954 Bell founder Roy Richter formed his first helmet out of fiberglass and named it the ď500.Ē That moment was ground zero for the modern motorsport helmet and it gave rise to an entire industry. Bellís new Custom 500 pays homage to Richterís original design and adds modern protective technology to bring the design up-to-date while still keeping the originalís aesthetic. By combining a custom fiberglass layup with a specially designed EPS foam layer, Bell engineers were able to craft a helmet that is at once light weight, narrow in profile, and DOT-compliant. Adding custom paint-inspired graphics, chrome trim work (on some graphics) and a quilted liner, the new Custom 500 custom looks as good as it performs.Features: Custom fiberglass shell. Custom-quilted liner. Chrome trim (graphic dependent). Integrated snaps for aftermarket shields and visors. Padded chin strap with D-ring closure and strap keeper. Five-year warranty. Certification: DOT. Weight: 880g.

Those color names had me almost shit myself a couple times:

COLOR: EVIL SUCKA!
COLOR: PUNKIN' HEAD
COLOR: SHAZAM MEETS THE GREEN LANTERN

The blue one actually comes with a saying on the side that says "Suck It". I would have prefered "No way!" or "Get out of here?" or "DAMN!!!".. You know, words that express my individuality

Hi avastyematey,
Motorcycle helmets are one of the more popular styles of motorcycle helmet on the market today because of the freedom that they provide to the rider. This allows for a larger surface area on the rider's head that air can flow past, which in turn helps keep you cooler while you're riding. Is there any protection of eyes and is there any other verity available.

Thanks...

I'm always on the prowl for good helmets. I met a really cool dude named Craze from Eternal Combustion at the Beatniks show about a month ago and he had these helmets on display. These are the lightest and most form fitting helmets I've ever worn. Its super low profile and has a great lining. Its reminiscent of the Simpson Bandit, but it doesn't smell like sweat and sneeze because its brand new. They run about 2 bills, and they're worth every penny. On top of getting a great product, you will have the pleasure of buying from a great company with unparalleled customer service.

For any nay-sayers, I thought the same thing until I put one on and rode the hell out of it. You don't get to the other end of the trail thinking you've had your head slung all over the place and they are sturdy as hell too. Hard foam inner shell and soft, removable foam lining that you can take out and hand-wash to keep spring time fresh.

OK, so I thought about the goggle issue, and I think I found a solution. I checked around a bit and found these at Lowes Hardware. The shape Is pretty much a perfect fit. They are a great quality goggle, with a slight tint. The lip on the back is a thick pliable plastic, and they pop right in and hold in place very well. I'm going to trim off the little loops for the strap, but that's pretty much it.

The Mclaren F1 pit crew helmets are pretty insane.

http://store.ruroc.com/images/PRODUCT/medium/28.jpg

http://store.ruroc.com/images/PRODUCT/large/31.jpg

These are actually ski helmets. I'm sure the F1 helmets are fire safe and other such things.

Edit: Looks like Ruroc does make the F1 and a moto version but non of the pages want to open. Hell, I bet these ski ones are stronger then most novelty helmets and they would keep your head way cooler.

i have owned all 3, daytona cruiser, fulmer v2 and bell custom 500. i returned the mail ordered giant bell 500, fulmer is not bad but kinda egg shaped and the smallest of the 3 is also the cheapest, the daytona.

i have not seen the motoflake people have been talking about, and have serious doubts about them actually being dot approved because of the way they sit and for some reason DOT has not posted online helmet test results in a few years.

i have owned daytona fulmer and biltwell. i have a small head they are all too big lookin. the slimest fit is daytona, biggest is biltwell and fulmer is just a bit under the biltwell. i sold all 3. i use a vintage helmet now fits way better but i had to go through about 4 to find a good close fit. the best bet if your lookin for best fit is get on ebay and start bidding on vintage till you find the right one.

Ok, let me just start of by saying that I love my Biltwell. I do want a little more protection when on long trips so I decided to give one of those motoflake helmets a try. I've been hearing people talking about them and I saw that they went on sale on their ebay store for $79 so I bought one.
The motoflake is by no means as well built as a Fulmer or a Bell. The motoflake is exactly the same size as a Biltwell although the Biltwell is way more comfortable. The motoflake is DOT and the Biltwell is not. Here are a few side by side pics comparing the 2 helmets.

Frankenstein...Does it say DOT somewhere inside, like a tag stitched in the liner? And is it like a clear "plastic" over the color or paint like on a biltwell/vintage helmet? Also, what was the shipping turnaround from when you paypalled to when it was at your door...decent? I'm getting real close to getting one of the Motoflakes myself, they're just a little vague on their ebay page. I think with my collection of ol' helmets and biltwells, I should at least have one lid that's DOT.

Size MED for me and no "bobble-head".

As noted it does have a tag stitched inside with DOT info and has DOT on the lower back.

It has a really smooth gloss finish and nice metal flake which to me is comparable to the Biltwell "megaflake" helmets. Like I said before I love the Biltwell helmets but for me when I tried them on I never felt compelled to buy based on the fit. I ordered a MED and it feels like it fits down on your head the same as a Biltwell but for me just a little more snug. I took a chance and I am happy as can be with it. Comes with a helmet bag as well.

Shipped out on 7/15 and arrived this morning (7/22) via UPS.

Thanks both of youz. That is exactly what I was looking for. Rumor has it, cops around here are starting to look IN your helmet now for DOT info, after the tidal wave of newer flake helmets on the streets.

http://www.thebellstore.com/images/Helmets/Custom500/2010_custom500_silver.jpg (http://www.thebellstore.com/Helmets/custom500.html)

Bought one of these a month ago. Big compared to my Biltwell but to me, that is all DOT certified lids. Rule of thumb.....DOT = bobblehead. My friends keep telling me "naw man,it doesn't look that big" but I know better. Oh well, i need my life insurance to pay the wife and kids when some cager makes me a hood ornament. Until there is some new technology that cuts down on the friggin inch of hard foam it takes to make them DOT, they will always look that way. Seems like they would have some thin "spaceage" material to use by now..................nice helmet though!

Does anyone have Fulmer AF's? I'm watching a few on eBay and am not sure if I'll be a small or medium. I wear 7 1/8 or 7 1/4 hat if theres any way to match that up. Internet hasn't given me any real help.

Also bought one of the MotoFlake Helmets. It comes with a tag for Motorbrigade Helmet Manufacturers, but haven't seen any info about them. I ordered a medium and am possibly exchanging for a small, because the medium moves around too much.

Tito

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Most vintage helmets run SLIGHTLY smaller than their true size. I wear a 7 1/8 in a ball cap. I have 2 vintage kinda beat-up AF's, and they are medium and fit me fine. Move around a bit, but it is within my threshold of acceptable. That's also because there is no real comfort foam left. I just got a NOS Shoei vintage helmet off ebay and it is a Medium and it's a bit too small. Hard to get over my ears. Shoei is smaller slightly.

It really is a crapshoot buying vintage helmets without trying them on. I stick with Medium. I have quite a collection by now, and only wear about 3 or 4 total. Need to liquidate, but too lazy. Still looking for more though. It's a sickness. Hope that helps a little bit.

Standard gloss black JK400 with a red interior, is $135. Shipping to me in nor cal from Brazil is the kicker at 35 economy (2-3 weeks) and 48 express (still about 2 weeks). They said they can have it ready to go in a week.

A vintage Fulmer or even a vintage shoei. Probably medium size. The vintage ones are the smallest, both of mine are even smaller than my biltwell. The biltwell is comfy though, and getting better the more I wear it. I wear a 7 1/8 in a SF Giants hat.
there's a guy on ebay who sells vintage NOS helmets for a decent price. I got my shoei from him. (i'm getting rid of)

I didn't ask, but I wouldn't think so. If you look at some close-up pics, the fabric liner is pretty thick, and shell is pretty close-fitting. I just don't think they can get hard liner in there at that size. If I can make some scratch selling a few things, one is coming my way.

These lids are the shit and Biltwell has done it again. The copper is insane pearly in the sunlight, the primer red is nice and dark and the fades on both flake lids is outstanding for being mass produced. The sunset burst duo flake is an orange flake biltwell with rootbeer shot along the edges. VERY NICE!!!!

kudos to the Biltwell team, they win again. . . now start buyin em up so they can put out some more fade jobbies cause from what I understand, once these fade job flake lids are gone they wont be produced again in that color combo. You know how on the megaflake Biltwell's, the color is on the "inside"? Kinda like the flake is deep underneath the clear plastic-like shell? Well, how does that work with the new flat colors? Is the color pigment molded INTO the actual shell, or under it, or would it be easy to scratch?

they look exactly like the flat black lids. The color is on the shell, no clearcoat. If you drop it on the pavement I am sure it would scratch like any other paintjob but even the flat blacks you can "rub" out a little scratch here and there with your fingers. What you are seeing on the flakes is the color under the clearcoat giving it that depth.

Hey all, so I'm a new rider, have wanted one for years so I could go ride with my Dad and I finally got an 89 Sporty this week... so I'm shopping for helmets. I've read a lot of this thread, followed a lot of links, and even read *most* of that longass article linked a few times from Motorcyclistonline.com (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/motorcycle_helmet_review/index.html), which just confounded me more in regards to whether to go DOT or not. I'd really like some opinions and shopping advice.

At first I wanted to just get something like those german style flared out helmets like this one from here (http://www.jafrum.com/Motorcycle-Helmets/German-Helmets/115Matt#). It's DOT, but curiously cheap at $30 Opinions?

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31O8ujIcQ2L._AA280_.jpg

Then I thought that I should also get something for highway riding that accepts a bubble shield and would cover my ears, so I immediately thought of Biltwell, but I'm concerned about going non-DOT.

There's also the Bell 500 I think it was?

And now the above linked Rockhard American Classic, which looks great but I've never heard of. Looks great, shit, I may even like it more that the Biltwells but I know it's gonna be a DOT bobblehead.

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/OG/2011-Rockhard-American-Classic-Helmet-Matte-Black.jpg

I don't know, I live in a small town where the only place to try on helmets is a local HD dealership and you know they don't have anything there I want, or could afford. That all said, I really need to some real-talk advice from you knowledgable folks, and was surprised there wasn't more of a focused helmet safety and review thread already.

So, uh, open fire on the newbie!

BIGJ
08-17-2010, 5:22 PM
Hey Dozen,

If are a "new" rider get a DOT full face helmet that will protect your melon. New riders are significanlty more prone to "accidents" and there are things like wind noise that you have not had expience with that will determine
what helmet you will ulitmately come to like. The german style helmets suck for wind noise i wore one for a week and ditched it. Plus riding in one is like opening an umbrella in the wind it wants pull your head off.
I love my biltwell and my vintage open face helmets but I also wear a Shoe full face and a Fulmer AF-655
Try a couple wear what you like and what you feel safe in.

dozen
08-23-2010, 1:49 PM
Hey BIGJ, I'm positive now that I'm getting something DOT, plus I'm pretty set on a 3/4, open-face style helmet - the german one is out, both because of your comments and some reviews I read saying it was HUGE. Nope.

Any other opinions or recommendations for DOT 3/4 helmets to buy? So far I'm looking pretty seriously at that Rockhard American Classic, Bell 500, or HCI Open Face (http://www.jafrum.com/10FlatBlack), but I'm still listening.

I'm such a indecisive shopper...

kevinphan

We'll be continuing both fades that are listed above, but we might not carry the full line of flats into 2011. Just trying to see what lids we want to bring on full time for next year. If you see one you like, you better buy it!

BELL CUSTOM 500:

Finally got my hands on one and have been wearing it for a few weeks. It is a VERY nice helmet when it is off your head. Well made and the interior is cool BUT it sits WAY high on your noggin, more than the Fulmer V2 for sure. The only other complaint I have is that the chin strap goes right across my adams apple giving me a choking feeling the entire time I wear it. I would choose the Fulmer over the Bell if I needed DOT. Biltwell over them all if DOT does not matter.

Not sure if this thread is out there somewhere if it is point me in the right direction. Looking at several different low profile dot 3/4 helmets just wondering what you guys think could use some advice. Cause there isnt many reviews online. Looking at the Bell Custom 500, Rockhard American Classic and the Fulmer V2 Bobber. if you guys have any of those or have heard anything let me know thanks hammey13

I got the V2 and really like it, fits good, no lift, it is a little bulbis (love that word haha) but i like it and will probley get those for the rest of my life unless i go full...which i might have to when i move up north for the colder months.

I have also talked with people that really like the daytona (be careful they size them big)

from what i can gather it boils down to head shape...if you have more of an oval head (like me then V2, if you have a round head then daytona

Search ''helmet" on the forum. Look at (anything relating to). Theres almost 1000 posts regarding this topic, should answer your questions.

Maybe should make this (http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4375) a sticky thread since it's all about HELMETS and keep it easily accessble for old and new visitors to find relevant info on brands, open face, full face, DOT vs Novelty, Painting, Re-lining, etc.

I don't wear it much, but I dig my fulmer. Shell sizes are smaller for the sizes below M, and bigger for sizes L and up. I have a pinhead so mine isn't too bubble-head looking.
