The sticker on the back doesn't work if stopped, you have to have a tag on the inside that states its dot and the date of manufacture if you get caught "tampering" with a non dot you can even get a bigger fine in MI where I live.I've only been caught once but It's was an $80 dollar lesson that Its not worth repeating to be "cool".And I'd rather not give them any extra reasons besides my apes jockey shift and no turn signals to pull me over. The turn signals are not required but it sucks explaining any ways ,And if you get a shitty cop I don't want a bunch of fixxit tickets I have to try to fight in court ,because my bike is a special construction and some of the stock rules don't apply.Plus as a side note I believe that if you get a helmet ticket it can affect your insurance if they catch it ,but it did not happen to me.

just throw a dot sticker on a biltwell and call it good. Your local donut dunkers wont know the difference.

***disclaimer*** I would never condone or suggest falsifying a DOT helmet \m/>.<\m/

Well there you go. I didn't know it was law in some states. That sucks. All that is, is a money maker for the city and a chance for da man to phuck with ya.

The likelihood to be injured on a motorcycle vs a car is interesting.

Part of what is driving that low score may be that a lot of motorcyclists ride as a casual recreation, rather than as a tried and true form of transportation. In riding for recreation, you're probably not likely to be in the midst of rush hour, thus reducing your overall risk of intersection accidents.

But, having said that, I wish it were due to motorcyclists just being more focused on their surroundings and being able to handle situations before they become bad situations.

I would definitely think that the casual rider would actually be more prone to have an accident as they are not a seasoned rider. They might be paying more attention to the bike (shifting, brakes, where shit is, etc) than paying attention to the road and the cars around them.

with that being said a large majority of motorcycle accidents are caused by other motorist and not the actual rider.

Also, it's not really surprising that there are more car accidents than bikes as there are way more cars on the road. While there may be more injuries in a car the injuries you sustain in a bike accident are probably going to be a lot more severe.

I didn't mean for this to be a post on accidents, I just thought that info was interesting. But while we're on the subject... I was involved in an accident about 4 years ago. After coming to a stop, the old man behind me, in his new Dodge 1500 decided to take me out like a linebacker hitting the QB from his blindside! I was lucky to walk away from that, even though my bike folded up like a pocket knife.
What did I learn? Not sure, cause I didn't do anything wrong. Anyway I'll keep on ridding, cause that's what I do.

learned to ride in chicago, no helmet law! awesome right? down side - can't split lanes & the speed limit is 55! i know you're not actually going to go 55 but 10 over is safe passing a cop, thats still 65! still not cool!
now i'm in santa cruz & oakland, ca. helmets with dot are a must (if you get caught). most cops don't seem to check cause most people are wearing little skullies. but we can go fast & split lanes. i'd rather do that than sit in traffic.

i did not know the information you posted, thanks for posting, def informative. as far as owning a DOT...i do and did so on purpose. it was between a biltwell and v2 and i couldn't rationalize buying something for the sole purpose of being cool without function. I used to use the same "something is better than nothing" when i wore my german brain bucket but now that i have a kid i really don't wanna be so selfish...no helmet laws down here and i really don't like wearing a helmet unless its cold but for my sons and wifes sake i do...don't wanna burden them with takin care of my crippled asss.

as far as that statistic...injury is pritty vauge. i would much rather get injured surounded by a metal cage then on a bike.

crashing sucks no matter what way ya look at it. No i will not throw my helmet away after it expieres...the only reason i would not use one anymore is if i crashed and it took a beating for me.

good thread

Really, a full face "NOVELTY" helmet?
What's next, novelty brakes, tires, lights?
I'm not a helemt law type of guy, but if you're going to wear a full face wear one that wont colapse onto and into your face bones.

Thats only my opinion and worth every penny you paid me for it.

We carry the above mentioned helmets here in the states and they are indeed considered "novelty". They are also hand-laid fiberglass, have a hard foam inner liner and a soft foam liner that's removable to keep spring-time fresh. They're every bit as tough and solid as the old fulmers and bells that everyone's rockin these days, but to each their own.

You can check 'em over at the EC site - www.eternalcombustion.com - or you can go listen to real metal and be a real masterbuilder...

back in 1976, they issued a letter stating that if you custom painted your helmet, you compromised the structural integrity of it, thus rendering it useless. not stating the fact that in most wrecks, the thing broke your neck from the sheer weight of it.

things were hot and heavy back then with the law and motorcycles. to put it simple, the government was sick of marauding hoodlums on choppers and started a nation wide crack down on every one on two wheels.handle bar height, baffles, helmets, ejection seats, any thing that some old safety nazi bitch could get instated against bikers. cops sticking nightsticks in your exhaust pipes, measuring from either ground up to top of your bars, or measuring from the seat to the top...blah blah blah and your helmet too. no real good interpretation of federal laws from state to state. motorcycle rights groups ripped it apart by 1980 but, like rust, these safety freaks never sleep and try to save you from yourself. phoooey

I just reply to stats of this thread. there are less motorcycles on the road than cars this percentage is not a proof a being safer on motorcycle than in a car. you may have 95% of vehicles that are cars and only 5% of motorcycles.

for the helmet materials of what they are made of get old and their mechanical strength. I remember having a good pair of ski shoes which were 10 years old and in apparently very good condition, I made one turn, two turns and ooops they broke in pieces, plastic was too old to support. it's the same for an helmet.

In my country we are advised to change an helmet every 5 or 8 years depending on the construction.

I guess Indian Larry died from a brain trauma which sure had been avoid with a simple good helmet.....

i dont think helmet laws specifying DOT is all about money. DOT helmets, even those from the 70's, are safer than novelty helmets. so if you live in a state with a helmet law (thankfully i do not) they want your helmet to actually be doing something... not just matting down your grease job. your 70's fulmer was probably DOT approved back in the day, even if the sticker isnt on there. are there helmets thats are made to be safe but not DOT approved? maybe thats what we are talking about...
novelty helmets are just that... a novelty. i think of them as decoration. which makes me wonder why people bother wearing them, cause its so much nicer to ride mowhawks to the wind. if you are wearing it just to show off your brushwork, pinstripe your melon :) anyway novelty lids might help one keep some skin and scalp when sliding down the road on ones noggin, but i cant believe they would do much else to protect that wad of hamburger in your skull. all that being said, i wear a helmet about 75% of the time. up from about 5% before having a kid and sliding through gravel on my ass at 50mph... mines a 70's vintage DOT, probably not very safe in the grand scheme of things.

For those of you who have already purchased, can you let us know what your head measures and what size of helmet you bought? No matter how many times I measure my head, it comes up around 22", maybe 22 1/8"... according to the Bell fitment chart, I would take a small, which seems weird since I'm nearly 6' tall and weigh 230.

I tried one on at the Minneapolis Cycle World International and i got to say it is slightly more "astronaut" looking than my 1st gen Biltwell. Many people probably wouldnt even notice. I have a huge head though so even small increases in side only make me look more top heavy.

My opinion might be a little biased of course. The 500 is very nicely made, but is taller for sure. A lot of people won't mind it sitting up a little more "proud". We have a Bell and Fulmer to compare to, so I'll try to take a side by side photo for comparison in the next day or so.

i can only compare to buco b/c that's the only other helmet i've ever worn. the bell 500 sits A LOT higher. it is EXTREMELY comfortable though. the inside is so so nice. it's like a silky type fabric and it's quilted and stitched beautifully. looks really stupid without a face sheild though. i posted comparison pics in another thread on here already...

I tried one on two days ago at westside customs in Oceanside, I gotta say I think, while not being the tallest, I dont think its that "Low Profile". It's DOT though, so maybe thats the sacrifice you make.

i have the eye one. if you're looking for one did you check justified defiance? that's where i got mine and i saw that he had others when i was there.

i can only compare to buco b/c that's the only other helmet i've ever worn. the bell 500 sits A LOT higher. it is EXTREMELY comfortable though. the inside is so so nice. it's like a silky type fabric and it's quilted and stitched beautifully. looks really stupid without a face sheild though. i posted comparison pics in another thread on here already...

Damn low profile and DOT approved.

Wrong, these things are almost the same size as a Fulmer. The only difference is the fulmer sits about an 1/8" taller and the bell is more of a round shape instead of an egg like the fulmer. Still makes you look like a bobble head.

Steze

ok they are similar in size but the 500 is noticeably smaller and does not come down as far. i posted some photos in my profile. the black one is a fulmer V2 and the other is the new bell.

Here's the informal comparo we did today. Not very scientific, but illustrates the following: Fulmer=Biggest, Bell=Next, Biltwell=Smallest. Both DOT lids were size Large. Josh the lovely model is a 7.25 hat size. His least favorite fit was the Fulmer. The Bell also has a nicely detailed liner and the chrome trim.

Weight:
Biltwell Gen2: 856g
Bell: 1072g
Fulmer: 1126.

I'm not trying to promote here, just wanted to share the facts to help people decide what they want.

i love the biltwell lids but DOT does have more protection because of the high density foam. i dont want to look like an astronaut but i worry less about how i look and more about how often i get to ride. wear DOT, it IS safer. if you want a smaller lid, look at the bell custom 500

That's a really subjective question. Josh thinks he's about a 7.25, I'm about a 7.375 and they all fit both of us. I always get rubbing from helmets in the forehead area and on several full faces that I've raced in I'd carve a little foam out in that area. Probably due to my mishapen hillbilly head. Hard to answer your question. If I were buying a helmet with a hard foam liner, basically anything other than the Biltwell, I'd go to a local shop and try them on. With the Biltwell, it'll fit anyone with a M-L to XL size head and the foam breaks in and fits better after about a month. Comfortable yes, safety approved, no. If your head is under a size 7 hat size, the Biltwell will be too big.

There is no substitute for trying a helmet on in person to determine the fit. Especially if you are paying several hundred dollars for a real helmet. I have a bitchin AGV full face and it killed me after about an hour in it, until I shaved the foam a little bit. Maybe try hitting some shows or swaps where different lids are available so you can do a test fit.

Bill, Thanks for the comparison, Biltwell definitely looks the best, but for guys that want
to go DOT, I think the Bell looks pretty descent, & from my experience Bell's usually have a
really nice(plush) feel on the inside.
question: Is that Biltwell lid a light blue metal flake? or silver? looks blue to me. Nice.

There's no such thing as bullet proof. All that matters is the size of the bullet. Trust me, I wear one. It's called, bullet resistant.

Interesting though; in the Army there's actually very few motorcycle deaths where someone wasn't wearing a helmet. And these are DOT helmets too. We joke that the Army is going to make us ride with full battle rattle on. Kevlar helmet, vest, and elbow and knee pads. Hahaha.

This is a great thread! I've been thinking about getting a full-face because of some scary shit recently. I already have a DOT helmet but I hadn't thought about what would happen with the insurance company if I were to die. I don't have any kids or a spouse, but hell if I'm going to let them walk away from my family in that kind of a situation. Pretty interesting too about dirtbikers being underrepresented in accident statistics. I'd always kind of suspected that was the case.

Another fact from the Hurt report:
"31. The driver of the other vehicles involved in collision with the motorcycle are not distinguished from other accident populations except that the ages of 20 to 29, and beyond 65 are overrepresented. Also, these drivers are generally unfamiliar with motorcycles."

This is why I think more drivers should have motorcycle experience. You become more aware of motorcyclists when you are one.

when i first got my bike my buddy got me this at a army surplus place for 20 bucks. its a repulic of france from the early 80 i think....i painted it black for sheer awsomness.
it is made of metal.
one a early spring ride when all the winters sand is still on the road i went for a pissed off ride. taking a right turn at about 35-40 mph i hid a sand dune lost the rear wheel. as i went down i placed my right foot down whick flung me instantly to a landing on my ass/back position moving backwards. which promptly forced the back of my head to pavement.
i picked up my bike,
and went home. the helmet had a good dent in it, my ass hurt. but i went home.
if i had went into a metal gaurd rail headfirst at 100 mph. there would have been some margin for error. whats your margin.

That's just stupid, a DOT helmet never gave any ride additional horsepower.
Low end torque yes, smoother ride yes, better reliability yes, hp no.
Get real.

I've seen people get hit in the head with a fist, fall down, and die. Odd but it happens.
My kids best friend flipped a skateboard out from under him and the next thing you know they were calling his Mom & Dad to the hospital to see him before they pulled the plug. He died. Life is rough, wear whatever protective gear you want but you still stand a good chance of buying the farm in a get off at high speed.
Road racers don't hit cars, that's almost cheating. I've got off a flat tracker at over 120 mph but there wasn't anything to hit but dirt clods so I just slid for a loooong way. Hit a car with your noggin at speed and it matters little wether you're wearing a Bell SuperSpaceManCrashHelmet or just that stupid tattoo on your head.
Those lower speed get offs a good helmet might help but might not.
Take your pick.

I'm 60 years old, been down at highway speeds on only two occasions, but down at 35-40 MPH more times than I can count over my 45 years of riding, at times drunk or high...and that was back in the day, of course! I'm a very lucky survivor wearing mosting hand made junk, all shorties.

I wear the shorty or 3/4 type helmets for slower back road adventures. But ALWAYS ride with full face helmets on runs that take me on the highways ....mostly because of the damn bugs but also because of debris being hurled back at me from tractor trailer trucks....

Unfortunately....someone here reading this thread, STATISTICALLY, may die in a motorcycle accident. I believe all the good advice to purchase a "priced-to-expectation" helmet will prevent more of us than need-be ...from going the "statistical route". I don't want to be a wet-blanket.......

I have a black and gold shoei also. I think it was made in 73 if I remember right. It's actually smaller and fits a little better than my biltwell...

The new Bell custom 500's look really nice too. My girl was supposed to order one up last week but has been slackin.

NOTE FROM MODS:
If you've got questions or something to share about lids, full-face, novelty, vintage or space pilot, please put them here. If you wanna show off some work you've done on one recently, plese put that in the Anytime Art Thread where we can all worship your magic. I will be combining as many of the other random helmet threads into this one to reduce clutter on the board. BOTTL thread is not included in this.

Harpguy74's original post:
has anyone here seen these things on ebay? i find the fulmer huge ,the bell custom 500 is sold out everywere "orange size large if ya got one" but i have seen these on ebay , i have emailed them and they cclaim to be dot and lighter and lower than the 500 and the v2. i have been wearin a 1973 metalflake green that i relined but i and thinking more and more about a dot due to my 2 young kids and a nasty crash neerby that killed 4 bikers last week. these look ok , the colours are terible other than the black. i would love to hear from someone that has seen one in person

If it's the metalflake helmet that is dot on eBay and is being shipped from Taiwan then it is a filmed knock off with a shitty lining in it it will sit just as high as a fulmer or bell 500

We bought a gold one off eBay straight from Taiwan. Ordered size large. Got one marked Medium on the side and XL on the back. It looks exactly the same as a Fulmer as far as shell size and shape goes but with a less detailed liner. I'd be very, very hesitant to trust the DOT rating.

You can kinda tell that whoever wrote the add is American.
I think its worth a try...somebody buy one.
If someone is making these in the States, it's hard for me to believe we haven't heard of them before.
Somebody knows somebody that knows somebody that knows somethin'.

Also, I bought one from Taiwan, too.
Fits like a glove but feels real flimsy, not DOT nor is it stated as DOT.
But I dig it. Fits exactly like my Loser Machine lid...only uglier.

these look like a different lid then the regular taiwan ones out there.... but maybe he just threw his logo on the back of a new taiwan variant. But still have to agree on the DOT rating, never heard of these and I would think there would be some word out there about these "new close fitting 3/4 DOT helmets" lol

The other thing that seems odd is the helmets are labeled motoflake on the back.... but no website? I am sorry, all companies have websites....

Rode up to work today, great weather. About halfway into my ride on the 5 North through Camp Pendleton stretch, I turned to check the lane next to me and CLICK/WHOOSH, there went my pink tint bubbleshield.

A guy in an SUV pulled up next to me with a dirty look and I gave him the "well, nothing I can do now gesture....hands faced up"

But, made it to work no problem, maybe just a few dried water streams on my face from the lack of wind protection. Word to the wise, it may always be a good idea to hold onto those shields when you're turning your head to check the lanes around you. Or maybe my helmet's snaps were just worn the fuck down.

Did the older bubble shields used to have snaps for the side of a helmet as well as the three on top? I have an old helmet that has three snaps on the forehead area and a snap on each side of the helmet near the cheek/ear area.

I had the same problem as others; just about lost my bubble shield a few times on the freeway while looking back over my shoulder. That's one of the reasons why I rarely wear it.

eliwolf6
05-07-2010, 6:57 PM
a buddy of mine is making a little setup that is pretty sweet and easy to solve this whole deal.. he cuts little slits on the sides of the bubble and runs a leather strap through each side with a snap that connects to the two lower snaps on the old school helmets.. works good (i lost a bubble shield as well, never rode one again)

+ 1 on the fullfacer.I have enough problems keeping shit attached to my bike, much less worry about shit falling off my helmet.

I did lose a cheap pair of sunglasses that I bought at the dollar store, because they didn't have any safety glasses and mine were way darker. They were polarised and it felt like my front wheel was bent when I went under twenty miles an hour.No I wasn't high. They flew off, stopped to put my sunglasses back on and had no problem the rest of the way home.

Anybody else have that problem with polarized glasses mabe they were just so cheap the lenses were distorted or something?

Lately, I've been heading towards a full face so this may just push me further towards that direction. Problem is as we all know, finding a full face that has a good vintage vibe. I'm all about the safety of a full face, but not with the sacrifice of looking like a goon that should be on a GSXR when riding my girl bike.

Just ask yourself why the MotoGP, AMA, motocross racers DO NOT wear "novelty" helmets? The ground your head will hit is just as hard as the ground they will hit. No helmet will protect you from the worst possibility. But at least a decent helmet give you better odds than a KFC bucket.. What if boils down to is its your head. If you don't give a shit no one here will either.

Meant to add. Cool is fleeting. Dead is forever.

JD bubble shields USED TO stink...and you are correct, it was because they were original stock from the 70's and sat in a container for years. only they didn't smell like piss, they smelled like 20,000 year old dead guy vomit. but if you wrapped those up in newspaper and sat them in the sun for a couple of days they do not smell anymore. i have 2 of the old ones that i've been riding with for 3 years no complaints. i also have a '76 buco that was new in the box when i got it from JD a few years ago. they relined it and i gotta say it's the most comfortable and nicest helmet i've found...i even prefer it over my bell 500.

they are now selling new repop bubble shields that don't smell like anything at all. the smelly ones are gone.

smokey469

I'm with Hollie, the smell of the NOS bubble shields had nothing to do with JD, it didn't matter who you got them from they ALL smelled that way. Also I've dealt with JD several times over the years and had the pleasure of meeting them at the Smokeout last year, and they are and always have always been top notch!

I've read this before, but can't place it... There are some helmet manufacturers that make helmets to meet those requirements, and get the approval. For companies like Arai, Shoei, etc, they make helmets to their own standards, yet still send 'em into the Snell Foundation to get their seal.

I wear Arai.

I have heard alot of stories about how a proper lid will save your brain. (Havent read all of this thread so this is just from my own) I wont bore you with spacifics about any time I have crashed other than to say whenever it happened to me I didnt have a lid on. Could explain a few things. Hahaha!

But whatever anybody says. The cheap half lids just crumble with impact. Its not a matter of foam or whatever. They are just crap. If your sporting one, dont think your doing yourself any good at all.

When I was a kid. I went to the local 7-11 for a bottle of Booze Farm for my girlfriend just before the Ozz Fest. Tix fell out of my pocket. By the time I found out It was too late. I was pissed beyond beliefe. Chucked a full face Bell 6 or 7 times on the ground enough to make it bounce! Got pissed at the OL last year and chucked one of those Koren made 1/2''s W/O much attempt and it turned into shit. Didnt think it would happen or I wouldnt of done it. Cought shit for that one.

Would rather ride with out one most of the time but dont kid yourselfs about cheap shit!

And just a word for our sponsors here on Chop Cult. I consider the any size fits all lid at Biltwell to be a good alternative to another non DOT lid. One of these days I'll win one so I can strap it on my bike and pick up a tweeker chick on the side of the road and carry her scabby ass home for a theesome! ;0

Maybe Bill should do a smash/crash test to set us all a ease. If there hasn't been one before. Just bought a Biltwell for the Ol'lady.

I went head first into a rock wall. I did break both sides of my jaw, but no concussion or other head trauma. Doc said with a full face I could be dead or worse paralyzed (I think it's worse) because the impact would have put all the force right to my neck. I am very thankful I had that novelty helmet rather than nothing or a puddin bowl. All that being said I have a pro series Bell helmet for Bonneville this year, but I still wear my Biltwell lid when I ride.

About 22" fits me fine but I find myself tightening the strap sometimes so theres no lifting.

Anyone know where one can get replacement shields for old Full Face lids? I got a '81 Shoei interstate Hawk and a Bell Star I'm looking for.. I've checked everywhere and yes egay as well. I even went to the local bike shop to see if there was a universal one, but they didn't have. thanks for any help or at least point me in the right direction. ride safe.

Green and Silver Scalloped one was done a year ago with rattle can.

The Red and Tangerine one was done recently using a spray gun I just bought to practice with. It is the first time I have tried something like this so I was pretty happy. Next step is to work with candy clears and try to work out metal flake

Planning to get some more practice in and make them a bit rad. Been wanting to do this for ages and had a sketch of that scalloped one for years. Not many people down here do this sort of stuff, but it was this forum finally helped me get it done.

just for reference, my wife's head measures 21" and the biltwell fits her fine. It does not move around on her head. Now riding might be another story, it may lift a little I am not sure. She doesn't ride with me.

Thanx for the kind words guys !! Yes both helmets were at the Ride to Skate show but only the green/woodgrain one was raffled off. The woodgrain was all done freehand and yes those are brains/intestines. Those were sprayed out via a stencil made by Craig Fraser and then there was alot of freehanding done to the stencil to make it look more realistic. the stencil itself just gives you an outline so you dont have to spend time sketching it out. Check it:

I am a 22.5 and I wore a biltwell once.
Gotta say it was a nice fit, but I never wore it while riding...
Looking into buying one though!
