Here is my $15 helmet I got at a thift store. I relined it myself so its not super fantastic, but respectable.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/mrvantastic/0209000002.jpg

Its painted sparkly red, but i cant seem to get any of the imperfections to come out! i've tried every compound we have at the detail shop i work at a few times a week. Anyone got any suggestions?

here are 4 that I painted recently. Sorta the "rough and ready" look to them - "distrssed" or "weathered" look to every imperfect line and color.

on ebay, they are going for crazy prices right now. i suspect the japanese. i had one a few years back which i bought off of ebay for like $30 + shipping. Sold it, used an open face helmet for awhile and now want another one. got on ebay, saw a few going for $10-40 with 2-3 days left on the auction, saved the auctions and came back the last minutes to snipe the last bid at the end... but low and behold the prices $KYROCKETED. And one thing I noticed was that on a lot of the auctions asked if they could ship to japan. coincidence? maybe...but maybe not.

Not to hijack this thread or anything but I have been wanting to pick up a full face, but wondering if anyone has any suggestions on one that-

#1-doesn't make me sweat like I just spent three days in hell, good ventilation is a must
#2- doesn't look insanely ridiculous, don't want to look like a sport biker on crack
#3- somewhat affordable, can't afford one of them $500 domepieces

anyone have some suggestions?

I know HJC makes some solid colored helmets, i would check out the HJC CL-16 in a solid color. They run for a little over $100 which wont break the bank..

I'm glad this thread was started. I was just thinking about starting a thread like this on the weekend and I log in and here it is. I've been looking for a older full-face for a while. Just something without the space helmet styling of the new ones.

The prices on ebay are getting goofy, I'm going to keep looking though.
I would absolutely love for Biltwell to make a retro styled full face. Dot or not, I would buy it. Please Biltwell, make a killer full face too.

I bought an HJC like the ones mentioned above a few years ago, very similar, and I like it. They are kinda big looking but as for ventilation they're great.

ok. so fuck extremsuply.com. i ordered one from the first page link, and paid for 3 day air. got a message saying it would be here today. i called them to ask why my bank hadnt been charged yet and where it was, they told me it would be at thier shop in a week, then theyll ship it.

so i called fulmer. 800-489-2300, told them about it and they said they werent even authorized to have fulmer on their website.

so i got it cheaper (same price, lower shipping cost) and it will still get here in about 3 days. saved $11.

plus, they have them in stock. the woman told me she can go right then and place her hand on one.

I would go with a Bell Vortex or HJC FS-15. Unfortunately you get what you pay for as far as ventilation and quality. Try and find a left-over Shoei RF-1000, they should all be on sale now since the RF-1100 came out. I've been using a RF-1000 for about 4 years and I love it still.

My manky lid, the cell phone phots hide most of the huge bubbels in the stickers, as I can never apply stickers to a curved surface very well. Made by cromwell in the UK, sadly they ceased production of it.

Stopped into the local bike shop today (Ron Ayers Motorsports) to get some fork seals. As I was leaving i saw the fulmer v2 helmet and thought id check it out. There on the other side was a whole rack of bubble shields by fulmer. clear, smoked, bronze and chrome about 3-4 of each and about 10 clears. $19.95-$24.95. I already have a clear one but i dont like to use it unless its really cold or raining but at least I know where i can get one now instead of ordering off the internet.

Heather, check out Scorpion helmets. The best helmet you can get for the money. I have 3 of the $700 Arai's in my closet and just picked up a Scorp today. The EXO-400's retail for right around $160, but if you go to www.sportbiketrackgear.com, they have a bunch of them on blowout.

I just picked up a Shark RSI. It was a closeout model, but got great reviews. I walked around a store with it on for about an hour, no joke, and continued looking at parts and other shit. It never fogged, and was pretty damn light.

www.cyclegear.com has them pretty cheap, less than 150, in red or blue.

Also been using this place for reviews for a while. www.webbikeworld.com

Also have a Scorpion 3/4 helmet I think it's a 200 or something. It is comfortable as hell too.

Forgot some other links. I wish I could have got this helmet ( http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/shark-rsf-3/ ) in, they have it in a flat black for 219 here http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=4541

This is my new one.

Mine is very flashy, but I'm a cheap bastard and I couldn't pass up the deal. Huge difference between my novelty helmets I've had and the new RSI I got. My hearing is hammered between work and being on a bike for 12 years with no other source of transportation. I got off the bike for the first time ever and my ears weren't ringing, and my face wasn't numb from the cold morning air.

Not sure if i'm going to roll it year round yet. So far it is hard to beat comfort and weight wise. I had a 1st gen biltwell and loved it. I wore the new version for about 150 miles worth of riding and liked it, but it seemed a bit more loose than the first gen. It also could have been stretched out by one of the other guys that had it on for a period.

Ever since I crashed (thank god I was wearing a full face), the face shield broke off and shattered, the helmet had huge gouges all over it and part of the ear liner was missing (god knows where it went man)... I have been wearing a full face ever since, unless rollin to the neighborhood places to hang.

I like the Bell, sort of just because they are bell- no other reason really - lol

I dig that Pantera lid. Been checking it out for a few months. After almost 15 years of picking people up from crashes I finally learned a lesson from an unlucky/luck rider. Crashed at about 120 mph and walked away. Over 100' of skids from his helmet/leather and he was standing there waiting for a tow truck, not even hurt.

$350!?
Don't get me wrong, I believe in good helmets. I wear Shoeis on and offroad (and the occasional Biltwell,) but wouldn't shell out that kind of money for a supermoto helmet.

Wearing a dirt lid on the street (or sumo or dualsport or whatever you want to call it) has serious limitations. The beak/visor catches the wind pretty easily and can be a pain for more than just around town. For the same style, but for much less (around $115), check out the AFX37 (http://www.afxhelmets.com/helmets/fullface/fx-37ds.php?show=flat).

dublinmatty

i know arai has their latest XD-3 allowed the visor/beak to be removed and allowed a tinted shade to be installed.

I understand its $500 plus helmet...

Just was readin about the AFX helmet and there is a kit available so that you can remove the visor/beak and mount a tinted shield. Figure with the kit the most you are out is $200

As far as the shipping goes, I do remember that even though the guy charges an arm and a leg for shipping he does get the helmets out quick. I think my helmet came to me in 4 days from the time I bought it. That's not bad for someone shipping from Hong Kong.

HUGODV fit like a biltwell lid? the inside looks like its leather or am i way off on that.

Inside is vinyl or pleather on the ears. Cotton or something on the skull.
I shaved the inside for a snug look. It originaly sat a bit high on top but not too bad unlike some newer DOT 3/4.

biltwell fits much better

I'll post a pic when I get home.

I borrowed one from a friend once, he had the army green one with the star. If I remember right it did have styrofoam inside, but not alot of padding. Personally, I found it uncomfortable as hell. It felt like they used couple t-shirts over hard foam. It was okay around the city, but once I did close the highway speeds, there wasn't enough padding to keep out the air. I became like a parachute on attached to my head. Brutal.
As for size, it looked to big on me. Keep in mind a have a super small head, so every helmet looks big on me. In full-face helmet sizes, I wear a small. It looked alright on my buddy though, he filled it out.
You get what you get for the low price I guess. I wouldn't get one though.

Ahhh so it's pretty obvious that it's not? That was the only reason I thought about it, if I move to CT they don't have helmet laws so there wouldn't be a reason to wear a novelty. Screw it, I'll just get a Biltwell.

TemeculaTerry
03-31-2010, 6:27 AM
I had a few of these JP helmets in the past. One sat high on my head while the other fit pretty snug. One was uncomfortable while the other fit like a glove. They arnt bubble head helmets, they look pretty good on and some of you have seen me wear it places - It was the one with the White Star as well a flat black one.
$40 bones from Asia is not a bad deal and yea they get it to ya in under a week. They are DOT but for Japan, not here in the states is how I understand it and they are made for a low impact crash, that is why they have foam and the reason of no padding is so it doesnt sit so high on the head - you have to skim some where in order to stop the martian head - big, no HUGE difference.
Although They do sit higher than a biltwell, so to each is own I guess.

If a Helmet is going to be DOT, it will sit higher, it had to pass puncture and crash tests that have to withstand the impact, thus foam.

I dont want to speak for Billdozer, but the other day we were having a beer and riding around on his China machine BMW sidecar moto as McGoo hid up in his office and woudnt even come down to say hi - hahaha - he said the bells are a bit large compared to the Biltwell helmets, I guess if you want DOT there will be no way around having a Helmet that is at least 2 inches bigger in diameter.

These are not mine. I do not know the seller.

heres what the ad states:

’71 vintage helmets in excellent condition! They were made by Premier Seat & Acc. Co. One is a large the other is an XL. Both have chin straps and removable “bubble” shields. The head liners are in unbelievable condition. No rips, tears, or holes. Both still have the original inspection stickers and tags. SHCA approved and certified. Shells are free of cracks, chips, or major scuffs. Silver and gold metal flake sparkles brilliantly and gives that “Old School” look. Rare find!

I ordered a Daytona 3/4 because I heard they sit low, and didnt make you look like a martian. It sits pretty high on my head. It fills up with air pretty bad too. I was only going 30 or 40 and my head was getting thrown all over the place. I just put the visor on and am going to give it another shot. I have been using my full face right now, but hope to get a Biltwell soon.

you can tell by the picture that it catches alot of wind by the way it floats. But seriously you will have a hard time finding a dot 3/4 thats not bulky,I ended up getting a half helmet that's dot from zox that is a little bulky but it's comfy and doesn't catch any wind.I think it cost like 40 bucks.there's also a company that makes them out of carbon fiber they are pretty expensive though and I think the company's called head trip.

Love my Biltwell, like my Daytona. I've thought about a Bell, but really...how many helmets do I really need? Next helmet will most likely be a full-face.

If the helmet pulls your head up, maybe that's a good thing. Gotta keep your sights on the horizon, right? Sorry, I just got out of the MSF Rider Program.

Nubby

I rock a biltwell for riding around town, but if I'm going to be riding out on the interstate or gone all day riding I wear my Fulmer V2. It is not as cool as the biltwell, but it is DOT. After I wrecked last August and had a really close call in a head to pavement proximity kind of way, I can live with the dorkiness of a DOT helmet vs. the Biltwell. I will say, the Fulmer is much more comfortable to wear b/c I have a larger melon and it doesn't squeeze my head like the Biltwell does. I do like the lightweight nature of the Biltwell helmet though.

Only thing with a Fulmer is you have to go to their dealers b/c they don't sell online. Some of the HD dealers around here sell the Fulmer V2, so you might check there.

So, this might be a dumb question, but why isnt the bitwell DOT?

Mainly because they are a ABS shell without the harder impact foam inside (hard, white, solid stuff). They have a soft foam liner in them (like a sofa). That and it's probably costs a arm and a leg to get them certified. But damn are they comfy (I have one)! Anything has to be better than nothing though, know what I mean?

Go with a custom pattern. You'll be pretty pissed when someone shows up with the exact same graffic helmet you got. And make sure you check out the fulmer V2. I know a few people who have them. Fit's just barely taller than my Biltwell, and the sides are every bit as tight. I have a little head for a huge guy, so they all look funny on me. The Biltwell is the only one that looked right on me when I bought it, but he didn't have a fulmer either. The liners in the fulmer are nicer than the Bell also.

I too wanted to get a biltwell but couldn't justify the money for a non DOT helmet so i went with a fulmar v2 i really like the helmetf, absolutly no lift, not heavy, comes in cool colors and flake, def not as cool as the biltwell lids but ahhh well. the fulmar will probley be the only helmet i ever buy again when it comes to 3/4

My recommendation for a DOT lid would be the Fulmer V2. I have dealt with the Daytonas and they are JUNK IMO. The quality of the Fulmer is hands down better than the Daytona. The Medium Fulmer is about the same size as the Biltwell, that DOESNT mean they fit exactly the same but they are the same size overall when sitting next to one another.

Biltwells are the shit as almost everyone knows, and like someone else said, anything is better than nothing when hitting your head on the ground!

I have a couple vintage 3/4 helmets, a vintage full face (relined by Primo Helmet Designs) and that Bell in the picture (without graphics). I love them all.

The Bell is a great helmet that fits good and is as comfortable as any puddin' bowl novelty deal, but actually would protect my head. I like the removable ear muffs, and the d-ring hardware is quick release. I also dig that it is plain flat black. It is the only new helmet I have that I actually like. I have not had any problems with lift, unless the chin strap is loose.

The relined full face is great for long trips, and has the added bonus that I was able to choose the fabric for the liner. I would have gone with a modern DOT full face, but have never found one I like.

I have heard nothing but good reviews on the Biltwell and the V2. If I was to pick a company to support solely based on the people involved, I would choose the Biltwell hands down. Good company to support, always doing good things for the chop community. But there are other factors involved with helmet choice, and if I was in the market for a new 3/4 I would definitely go with a DOT one. If cost was a consideration I would choose the V2, but if I was willing to spend the extra cash, I would go with Davida, because of the soft leather liner.

Unless your helmet is comfortable to wear all day long, and protects your head, it is a waste of money.

I have a Bell drifter and I loved it until I pulled the windscreen off my bike. The wind catches under it so bad it damn near choked me out.
I bought a bunch of these:
http://www.motorcycle-helmets.com/Open-Face-Helmet-HCI-p/10white.htm
They're DOT and extrememly comfortable and light weight. I got them so I could paint them and modify them to fit the way I want. If you buy a size too small then trim the styrofoam along the forehead line and in the back around the centerline, they fit very close to your head (almost Biltwell close), they don't catch any wind at all, and they're only $30 so buy two or three. The only problem I've found is the rubber edge liner is very thin and I always end up ripping them to hell when I'm pulling them off for paint.
It even comes with a sweet plastic visor if thats the way you roll. HAHAHA

i wear a '76 BUCO and LOVE it. but mine has been relined at justified defiance. they use a really nice spandex type fabric that wisks away sweat and stays pretty cool and fresh. it's also got a nice low outer profile, and though it's not worth much, it was DOT for it's time.

Here's my first and probably last attempt to paint a helmet. I did it two years ago after I seen the choppertown movie.Yes I am a poser. It was a cheap dot I got with a gift card to cabela's can't even remember thebrand. It was black and I painted the scallops 2004 chevy metallic green with some tiny flake clear and gold testors model pinstripes that look pretty shity up close.Did it free hand without measuring the scallops and you can tell. used to wear it all the time when it was cold which is most of the time here in mi. but since I got my full face modular helmet I wear that and the dot half shell when it's warm.Helmet laws suck but I'd rather not pay the fine for a novelty.

I'm not sure, but that would be sick too. I know he said it is cleared when I got it from him. Hit him up and ask him on here. His screen name is Calicruiser. Dude's name is Josh, cool guy and very helpful.

here is a crazy helmet that my uncle painted a few years ago. I'm not sure how he did it but it probably took about an ounce of Sour Diesel!

That is amazing! Look up marbleizing or swirl painting to see how to do it. It is not terribly complicated.

that is freakin' cool! I'm going to look it up, but I'm sure it's way out of my skill set!

He was a cool uncle, he rode a ironhead with camo marbleized paint and knobby tires. If I find any other pictures of the other helmets he painted I'll post em up

I think I could do something like that a whole lot better than a pinstriping attempt.

You and your uncle's awesome lid have given me some inspiration to give it a shot.

I gotta ask... What's up with "Gotta have a DOT helmet"? Is it the law where some of you guys live? Or do you just not trust a helmet without the DOT sitcker?
DOT changes their rating every time a new helmet comes out. So the helmet you have now will be out of DOT certification pretty soon. Would you still wear it?
I live in Arizona and helmets are optional. But anything is better than nothing and I trust my 35 year old Authur Fulmer (with no DOT marks) is just as safe as my 2009 Fulmer V2 (DOT). Well other than it's age.

Check this out.
The number of people injured per 100,000 registered motorcycles was 1,229 while the number of injuries per 100,000 registered passenger cars was 1,497. In other words, you ARE LESS LIKELY TO BE INJURED on a motorcycle than in a passenger car. (1.5% of all registered motorcycles were involved in an accident with injury in the year 2000 while a full 5% of all registered passenger cars were involved in an accident with injury in the same year.)
You may check out the details and a great deal more (including the 2002 numbers) by going here: http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/pdf/nr.../TSF2001.pdf

DOT certified helmets are required in states that have mandatory helmet laws.

Check out your local motorcycle swap meets. There are usually some really good deals on Vintage 3/4 helmets and the older ones are usually DOT certified (to the year of manufacture) and the cops won't know a difference. Plus at the same time you will be supporting some old school guys who could probably use the money more than Bell.

Make a DOT sticker and slap it on the back of your non-DOT certified helmet. Your local chop shop might even have some.
