I've been helping a buddy on his build but I've yet to wire an electric start and am wondering if we can just wire his starter through an on off momentary switch and bypass the solenoid? chop cult gurus please advise!

How many amps you think your momentary switch can handle? Check it's rating.
If too small, your gonna need a relay.

And how many cold cranking amps is your battery rated at? The solenoid can handle it but not that button. Not for long anyway.
