View Full Version : Mild Bandit build...

I bought this GSF1200S in October '13 with the intention of building my version of a 'naked-cafe-fighter'. The original owner had recently laid it down (see the engine cover scuff on the left side) and all the plastics were toast. Thanks to a relentless job granting less than one afternoon per month open, it took me until this past weekend to finally get this thing done.

The rear frame was cut down and modified to mount a cafe tail section. I made the tail section using the rear half of a Victory Cross Country gas tank. I closed off the underside using the top round section off of a Honda VTX rear fender. It is rock solid!

The seat was cut down to be a solo. I glassed a rear support panel onto the stock plastic seat pan and then had the OEM seat covering reinstalled.

Because my daily ride is a Suzuki C90 with drag bars, the stock Bandit bars seemed really narrrow and pulled back too far. I swapped them out for a set of Renthal 996 dirt bike bars. Not only are they way more comfortable, they weigh half of the stock bars.

The headlight is a 80's era Vetter, I assume from a Goldwing. It's on fork mounted brackets that I welded tabs onto to hold the front turn signals. The rear turn signals do triple duty as running and brake lights. I'm waiting to see if the local cops have an issue with the license plate being tucked so far under the tail.

Speaking of cops...yes the bike is fitted with a "Hey, ticket me for excessive noise" shorty muffler, but I made a baffle that reduces the sound a lot, and doesn't seem to restrict performance.

And...it's for sale. For me, the joy (therapy) is working on the project, and next I've got a 1978 MGB project that needs funding and shop floor space. There will be another bike in the shop after the MGB is done. I'm already shopping for an old, spoke wheeled Goldwing.
