View Full Version : The Punatic: '81 GS550 Build

Aloha from Volcano, Hawaii!
I recently picked up a $200 '81 Suzuki GS550T from a guy who had hoped to put it's engine in a golf cart. Whoever had it before him had started a very bad bob-job. Tank was not attached (or water tight), no seat, not running... and then the classic Puna line: "It ran when I parked it."
Picture from craigslist:

Time to start playing with parts...

A little bit o' stove pipe black...

Meanwhile back at my house (I've been building the bike in a buddy's converted greenhouse...)

Here's a bit of idea of where it's going.

I just received new brake master cylinders off ebay, and the motor is just about ready to get put back in... why do I have to have a full time job? It'd be done already!

Got it down to a bare frame, chopped a bunch of unneeded tabs off and painted with satin black.

Loddy, you moved from HI to MN? Well that's a shitty downgrade.

Love the 'Onda move' by the way.

yeah lived there with a cheating woman that was cheating for 5 years..

so while it's a shitty downgrade geographically it's a major improvement mentally and emotionally.

Now about 95% complete. Still need to trim the ends off the exhaust, finish welding the pipes on the left side and install the intake manifold boots that are in the mail. Got new rubber on the front end and finished cleaning up the carbs.

Careful dem pipes bruddah. Them buggahs is low.

05-09-2015, 6:53 PM
They are and they arent. They exit about an inch lower than the rear axle, and most of that 90 bend will get trimmed. They should sit higher than the pipes on my friends '73 Sporty.

Can you post some detail pics on your solo seat install? I'm about to switch up my '82 and need some inspiration.

I welded two 'corners' behind the crossbar where the stock seat sat, and also a new crossbar that holds the end of my tank and the mount bolt for the seat hinge. Next time I'm at the shop I'll snap a few pics and post them for ya.

So, looks like it's not going to make it to the Memorial day ride. We got it to start firing on all 4 cylinders, but not very well. Basically after playing with jetting, air/fuel mixture, diaphragms and COUNTLESS rebuilds/disassembly/reassembly and cleaning we determined that the carbs are just too far gone, and will probably never end up running correctly.... not surprising since they were all full of water and rust when I got em. Looking into another carb setup in the near future, but moolah is the name of the game, so it'll be a minute before I'm ready to try it again. For now, I'm going to get the pipes squared away and create some mounts. Sorry, didn't think to snap a pic of the seat mounts last time I was there, I was too busy scratching my head over some sh*tty cv carbs.
