I'm low on cash and looking for some inspiration. Let's see some homemade parts. Anyone have any experience in making air boxes, foot pegs, tail lights, or other cool shit out of stuff laying around the garage?

First attempt at making a seat pan. I used a five gallon water cooler and a ratchet strap for the initial shape, then a little
hammer action.

I'm no pro bike builder and I certainly do not have education in metal fabrication (self taught) but here are a few of the things I have been doing on the latest build. I have only a few hand tools and a little mig to work with in the shop. No mill or lathe.............yet!
Hey, At least I'm trying to make my parts rather than buying the same old crap 99% of the "builders" are bolting on. I try to use old parts to make new parts. Its a cheap source of metal and they usually have the bends and shapes already needed.
No laughing........I'm a Chef not a welder! ahahahaahaha

For the shifter, I hand-turned a piece of pipe and used old neck races for gussets on the mount. I used a torch to bend the round rod and twist by hand. Then I heat again on the bike to make it look like a cowboy lasso reaching out to where my foot will be. The little loop reaching for the shifter arm was cut from some HD controls laying around.

Here is the brake side. Welded some more round stock together to keep the theme from the shifter side. I used the same neck races as gussets from the shifter side as well. I bent the rods to reach out as the brake pedal and another down to reach for the linkage.

I had these portions of the frame that extended out to form pegs already welded in place when I got this junk frame. The main issue was the frame was set for a V-twin and I am using it for a CBX motor which is WAY wider! SO, I wanted to maintain the permenant pegs but I needed to extend them wider to reach out from under the 6 cylinders. I also did not want to simply weld on extentions as that would be easy (lol) and would force me to powder it when the frame gets done. SO, I had these muffed up Chopper Inc grips I decided to make pegs from. I first shaved the throttle cable holder from the one grip. Then I trimmed the frame side slightly so the new pegs wouldn't stick out too far. Then I drilled a hole into the solid frame side and tapped for a bolt. On the bolt I welded a nut that I rounded to fit inside the grip on the entended side to give additional support once the grip is on the bike. On the frame side I hand turned the solid peg down by hand with a grinder (lots of fun) so that the grip would have a shoulder to rest on abosorbing most of my foots weight rather than the extension bolt. BINGO! I'll use sets screws to hold the pegs to the shoulder. The pics do a better job explaining than I do.

AND then this. This will allow me to screw the peg on after the frame has powder. Yeah the peg is aluminum but hey when it looks like crap from riding I'll just find another set of grips to modify and put in its place!
I'm doing the whole bike in this fashion. I should probably put up a build thread so yall can see the whole deal coming together. Its backyard building not pro building I know. But when I'm riding down the road I'll be real proud to have that "I Built Mine" shirt on my back!

Thanks for the posts guys! It's cool to see how creative you can get with random shit laying around the shop. I prefer homemade parts over store bought any day. It's easier on the pocket and you can take pride in knowing that you made it yourself. Besides, that is what sets your bike apart from the rest.

good job building your own stuff fella's!
we do need a build thread on the cbx chop, that should freakin kick ass.
here is a forkbrace,a brake master cylinder bracket, exhaust, front frame and forward controls, and my first attempt at a seat, that i built for a blast i am chopping up.i took a spin around the mile section last night(no headlight or tail light or rear brake,i know stupid but fun) and it made all the work seem worth it somehow :-O !
thanks for postin the pics guys keep hammerin, sawin, grindin, and sandin and show us the pics.

made a floating exhaust bracket for my rear drag pipe. old set up had a rigid
mount that would work harden & fracture after a few thousand miles. figured
I'd had enough of that after 3 rewelds (last 10k miles).
now the pipe can expand & grow when it heats up without causing stress on the welds.
at least that's what I'm hoping.

Had a Little Wrench Day with some buddies and decided to throw on the Plate Bracket I got From Loud'n'Greasy Customs. I wasn't quite happy with the way it sat (was a bit crooked) and so we got the grinder and welder out and played with it.

Here's the Piece as I got it:

And After Welding, some black paint and re-using the stock tailight. I can Still Turn Left. It's nothing Wild or Crazy, just killin a sunday afternoon with some tools!

I made a 2-1 pipe that looks like a 2-2 out of my stock 883r header and some straight pipe I cut and welded into one chamber. just a quick job to see if it works well and how it sounds. sounds super throaty and tough, and breathes way better than my last one, so I think I might be redoing it and taking more time on the cuts and having a buddy handle the welding.

I like the idea with your pipes man.!
I have the same pipes (and bike) and have been trying different variations to get them to breathe and sound great.
Any chance you have bigger pictures of your progress and maybe a video of the sound.?
Right now i have a short piece of pipe on mine, and eventhough its loud and noisy, i need a bit more deep thunder kinda thing from them.
Thanks for sharing.!

I made a pair of turn signals out of various bits and pieces I had in my garage. Copper end caps, aluminum tent pole, light sockets from a pair of old auxiliary lights. The lenses were cut from a reflector. The black sleeves covering the wires are black 550 paracord with the inner strands pulled out. A strip of black rubber (not pictured) wrapped around the sockets allows them to be wedged tight into the light housing.

The lights are 1" in diameter and 2.5" long.

Work in Progress. Bike vibed like crazy. Found some flander risers from a springer at a swap meet and cleaned them up. Used the existing bar clamps, turned a crossbar and a set of risers to go along the lines of the original clamps (was shooting for a wineglass-ish shape). I can see outta my mirrors and i can feel my hands again. HA!

Cheap and easy reusable camping shitter that's weiner friendly... cut a gallon jug between the handle all the way around... doo knot cut handle. Bend the handle back; drop the encapsulation in the main part; and piss in the "funnel" end... it goes down the handle as you poop.

I invent weird shit sometimes; especially improvised things, this certinaly helps the former... even in tight spots, this can come in handy... ass you can use it standing in a 3/4 squat if need be...

and will hook to a carabeener if hanging for extended... and it can be lowered without just dropping it and yelling trail mix... of course spladowing it on the rock face right under you to empty and reclip... creates a horrid path if someone trys to sneak up behind you... using your guide line.

cheers, but don't drink it... unless desperate times calls for desperate measures... mind the pickle.

Thanks. As NeoDutch noted, Its my ghetto version of a Hossack front end, with a crapton of adjustment options thrown in so I can play with different rake / trail / wheel path combos. "Ghetto" in this case meaning amateur mig welds and manual mill work. Safety ensured by literally loading the axles with a ton (2,000lbs) of vertical (bump / landing) and horizontal (braking / impact) firce while holding the engine mounts in a stationary jig.

For a sexed up version of the same front end idea, look at this custom k1300...

Hmm, I forget what picture(s) I might have put in the image section. At some points it certainly did not look functional, because it wasn't. I had to make a LOT of design modifications (including rebuilding most of the components aside from the fork itself, and learning some new skills) before I hit on something that would work. It's (meant to be) a functional ride, but "over done robot thing" is not a bad call on the design aesthetic.

Oh yeah. Forgot the home made stuff. My heel toe setup using 1950's rolling pin ends for shifter pegs. The shifter pegs look like little rocket ships. My shifter foot don't work so good after I worked over that ford taurus at 65 mph.

Went a bit blacksmith building a fender. Funny looking fender because its meant to protect people from a spiked ice tire, not keep mud from getting on the bike.

Or it'd tear your leg off. I've heard of hit-men inserting files into roofs of mouths to conceal the entrance wound, they'll fuck you up.

The guy I took my mc test with doesn't ride any more. I ran into him on a jobsite digging ditches with a limp. I asked him why, his calf was ripped off the bone by the stock foot peg (sport bike, the dipshit wore shorts) and they thought they'd have to amputate.
I've also bent my stock highway footpegs adjusting myself, there's a lot of leverage in forwards.

Its only when hardened and not tempered that (high carbon) steel is brittle. The heat from welding alone should temper it enough to remove brittleness, but if he's halfway smart he annealed it, if only to make welding easier. If the metal is annealed, its nearly as soft and flexible as any other steel. That's critical to how they MAKE files - they use a chisel to "carve" the teeth in the annealed metal, then harden it.

Accidental bending seems possible, as it would be for any other chunk of 1/4" thick bar stock. Hardening and tempering to spring-hardness could help there. Or he could just avoid putting his full weight on the tips of them.

A relatively simple piece, most remove their belt guards figured I would go in the opposite direction.

Take one gas tank,
re-paint it, apply decals and then clear coat it, add cap & fit,....
No, not quite.
take some flat bar and a few laser cut ''washers''
get some turning on a threaded adaptor ring,
Hacksaw a few bits, hard solder some bits and TIG a couple of bits,
add a Vitron washer, add all to the tank, throw in a gap filling, finishing ring and now ya done,
well, I like it anyway

THE ASPCGT (American Society for the Prevention Of Cruelty To Gas Tanks) wishes to point out that No gas Tanks were welded, cut up or altered in any way in the making of this post, and that any similarity between this and any existing gas tank either being used or rusted away is purely coincidental.

This is a barbecue grill made from the tank from a 1920's era hot water heater, a fireplace grate (the part you stack the wood onto in the fireplace) and some miscellaneous scrap metal.

I had my trouser leg do the rounds of the motor pulley the other day,...so decided to make a primary belt guard.
I started with some card and cut a rough shape out with basic measurements,...then refined it 2 or 3 times
until it was just right & I had a useable template...I measured 5 or 6 times before I started,...
a good firm in Cornwall by the name of ''LASER MASTER'' got sent the template and cut the blank out of 1/4'' aluminium plate.
it was spot on when I got it back a week later and for 14 ($18)
I made 3 pillars to mount it to, two at the front off of the alternator cover,
and one at the rear, off of one of the Transmission main shaft support bearing mount bolts.
first thing was to plot the 3 mount holes which I did by using a 1mm sheet of Perspex, I drilled the holes then transposed them onto the aluminium plate,.. spot on !!.
I then polished the plate to pretty much a mirror finish, covered in masking tapes and plotted out a pattern,
after 4 or 5 tries I got it just about right so centre punched it, then centre drilled, Drilled and chamfered for contrast ,...
I think it came out well and it fitted in one, didn't have a decent camera with me when I fitted it but ya get the idea ..
