View Full Version : 86 shadow build, quick question.

02-27-2015, 9:45 AM
I bought a shadow the other day for $500. Decided it looked to old-manish (plus the seats were ripped, etc) So i started cutting stuff.. Here is where i'm at now. http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/image1_zpsjx2siarb.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/image1_zpsjx2siarb.jpg.html)
Fender isn't mounted on the back yet, but i like how it's positioned. I have to re wire some of the bike, mount headlamp, and make a seat for it. Then tidy up the part of the frame where i cut the rails off and remove some not used brackets. The shocks are off of a sportster (shorter) and I have different bars for it on order. Question is, saddle bags. I'm taking a 5 day trip down south somewhere in april. I'm cheap and handy, so i'd like to use the military medic canvass bags, they are 12.5"x11"x3" and are about $16 each on ebay. I'd like to be able to remove them with little to no tools in a minute or two. (seat will also be able to be removed with no tools) I've never had a bike with saddle bags, or have I even looked at a bike with bags. I'll have a strap that goes under the seat, but how would i mount the bottoms of the bags? Is it as simple as some velcro loops to the frame/shock? Can I mount to the shock? I need some help. I can build bikes (even thought this is a cheap fast and easy build) but not sure how to safely mount soft bags... Any help appreciated! It's -13* here today, so i have some time to get this fingered out haha Thanks for the help!

Soft bags normally tie togeather and just hang over the fender. If you dont have much of a fender its time to be creative. Ive seen guys mount their bags low on the frame, once you get it positioned where you want i wouldnt trust velcro. Someone may of had luck with it but it doesnt sound like a good idea to me. What you might could do is find something like hoodpins except a little smaller. That way you can punch holes in the bag, slide hood pins through holes and throw the clip through it all. Easy on easy off.

If your bars are big enough maybe sit em on the light and tie em to your bars?

02-27-2015, 8:47 PM
I assume that what your saying is hanging the bags over the frame and under the seat (which seems like a good idea to me).

To secure the bags, I'd probably sew some leather straps with steel buckles, or some nylon web strap with plastic quick-release buckles to the back/bottoms of the bags, and connect them to whatever part of the bike is available in that area. Providing of course that the part doesn't get hot.

Whatever you come up with, post pics when you're done.

And the bikes looking good.

I second evil. Quick release or buckles are a great idea.

Thanks for the help guys. I just got my wiring harness thinned out and almost done, just have to wire in key switch, start switch, and fuse box. I ordered my bags today, yes i plan to run them over the frame under the seat, the bottom i'll figure out when i get here i guess. As far as mounting to the bars, that's where my tool box and bed roll will be. Thanks for the compliment! http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/image1%201%20-%20Copy_zpsk9e12kph.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/image1%201%20-%20Copy_zpsk9e12kph.jpg.html) I REALLY can't wait for my bars to get here...

You could use a few aircraft style camlocks.

Their used to lockdown access panels and the aircraft I work on can reach 170 knots so the should hold a bag down nicely. You'd have to fab up a plate with the slot to twist it into

Those look pretty cool... thanks for the idea man I may have to buy some.

Here's the front end with out the huge fuse box.http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/image1_zps9vfynspd.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/image1_zps9vfynspd.jpg.html)
I took no pics of anything else because the wiring needs to come back off to be wrapped up and the fan switch wire needs extended. I forgot to tie the kill switch wire to the ign wire so the initial start was pretty uneventfull, 2 min later after she was soldered up it fired right up and gave me 14.36V at idle. Then I cut my exhaust down and welded the tiny rear section that used to be clamped on to the head pipe (this is/was a jardine exhaust) I then installed lollipop baffles i made from a washer and nut/bolt. The exhaust needs wrapped, the wrap is soaking in a bucket but i forgot to get hose clamps.

Don't laugh, she's ugly right now

saddle bags came too! they're just sitting on there.

going out in a little to finish and tape up the wiring, mount the key and start switch, and probably pull off the carbs to wait for my jet kit and inspect the diaphragms.

having a hell of a time making a seat pan... figured i'd draw something up, it would work out, i'd like it, then i'd cover it in camping mats and vinyl or leather. however... everything I come up with looks like shit. I threw the stock seat away because it was ripped and shitty, kicking my own ass for that. any tips or anything? it's a frame mounted seat. Not sure i have this idea of a sprung seat in my head and that's why nothing looks right, but at this point i'm about to roll up and bungee cord a towel to the frame so i can ride the damn thing until i figure it out.
I did mount the headlamp and snap a pic though, i need to extend the controls about 6" forward from where they are.

03-08-2015, 1:14 PM
With mine i was gonna weld in a small cafe loop to the frame just the actual loop at the end and make a seat pan for that so it would all be a nice smolth curve and follow the lines of the bike.

03-08-2015, 7:39 PM
Well, i'm up to $720. Just needs a seat and the rear fender mounted to be a runner, then torn all apart to grind some brackets off and to paint it so it doesn't look like ass.
Totally completed wire harness

If anyone wants, i can probably draw up a schematic, i just looked at the stock wiring diagram and went off of that. I just happend to be a whiz at wiring, buddy paid me to drive 6 hours to completely rewire and entire car, relocate fuse boxes, hide all the wires, and install a megasquirt EFI system.
Here is where my key and start switch ended up, i can dig it!:

I got my title, registration, and insurance yesterday. I got a ride with a lady that works with me, who ended up having to leave work early yesterday so I did too. I threw my plate on, aired up my tires, checked diff fluid (then filled diff fluid), and soldered my brake light wires on. Legal enough to ride :).
Maiden voyage:http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/gas%20station_zpsm9gcbvaw.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/gas%20station_zpsm9gcbvaw.jpg.html)
We still have about 2" of snow on the ground, it got up to 48* yesterday. It wasn't bad at all until I hit water spots with my fender-less bike.. Anyone have a front fender for sale for a 86-87 shadow vt700? My front is already half mounted on the rear, but not fully. My truck breaking down on me forced my to have to use this bike earlier than expected. The fender can be slightly dinged up or something.
After my 50 mile ride:
http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/salt_zpssd1myfcp.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/salt_zpssd1myfcp.jpg.html)
Notice the tape on the headlamp? Yeah, some dumbass forgot to tighten the bolts holding it on.. About 15 miles into the ride a bolt fell out and it was just kinda hanging there. I stopped at a guys house i knew but he literally had no tools at all so this had to work.

Still need to:
clean and jet carb (jets came yesterday)
Mount rear fender
Make something for the choke to work
reroute cables (anyone have a source for SS braided clutch/brake line?)
make a seat
buy and mount front fender
Tear bike all apart and paint it

You guys must not like my build haha!

Eh, at least what I've seen, a lack of comments is more just neutrality. Not being blown away by it to compliment, and not scared for your life enough to warn you. I think you should try to make your own seat. A number of guys on here have done it. Nothin' to it but to do it.

03-10-2015, 7:47 AM
The seat fender and jets are first on the list, seat and jets take priority as it runs like shit. I'm toying with the idea of hard-tailing this bike and leaving the drive shaft exposed. looks like if I make a plate to bolt to the differential, then weld the frame tubes to that plate, I wouldn't have to have a cover over the driveshaft at all.

The only problem is this bike has two gas tanks and a fuel pump, that's why i left those chrome covers under the seat. The frame is actually the air box and the top gas tank only holds about 1.2 gallons of fuel or so.

A few thoughts- 1. Keep your fork tubes clean. I'm talking about the parts of the upper tubes that slide down into the lower tubes. You don't want that area of the tubes to get pitted from prolonged exposure to moisture or road salt as it could affect the seals of your fork tubes. I have fork covers on one of my bikes, but not on my other bike. On the bike with no fork covers I apply a thin coating of motor oil on my upper fork tubes (the areas that slide down into the bottom tubes) to offer some added protection.

2. You can rig up a temporary "mud flap" for your front wheel by attaching a piece of cloth, leather, rubber, plastic sheeting, etc, across your forks. This will reduce the amount of crud/water that the front wheel will throw up into the air, and wind up in your face. This is just a suggestion until you install a real fender. If you take this suggestion, just make sure the "mud flap" has enough slack at the bottom so the tire won't rip it off when you hit a bump/dip in the road and the forks compress down.

I got a lot done two days ago. I started mounting the rear fender. I had to cut out the rivits that held the mount on for the front, then grind off the mounts on the fender for the chrome metal rods. That allowed the fender to fit the tire all nice like. I taped a piece of 3/4" rubber tube to the tire to hold the gap for the fender, then marked on the swingarm with a straight edge where the mount needed to be. The mount is just a piece of 3/4"x1/8" flat stock wide enough to be welded into the swingarm. I then massaged it a bit to fit the profile of the fender and drilled a hole in it to mount the fender. Ive decided to move the fender back more than what is pictured. http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/rear%20fender%201_zpsnxxxawhj.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/rear%20fender%201_zpsnxxxawhj.jpg.html)

Next up was the front end. I drained the fork oil sludge (wtf?!)
http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/fork%20oil_zpsacaebv8v.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/fork%20oil_zpsacaebv8v.jpg.html)

I made sure to add fresh atf , work the forks, drain it, then add fresh.

I cut about 1.5" off of the spring spacers
http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/chopped%20fork%20spacers_zpsonzbqlei.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/chopped%20fork%20spacers_zpsonzbqlei.jpg.html)

and then raised the forks in the triple trees about 1", lowering the front 2.5". I like the look a lot better now. http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/bike%202_zpsp6wyidih.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/bike%202_zpsp6wyidih.jpg.html)

I plan to raise the front of the tank 2" as well. You can also see the start of my seat. It's 1/8" aluminum stock. The front mounts like stock with a piece of aluminum rivited to it, i need foam, shorter rivits, and some washers to finish the seat, and some flat stock to make fender struts for the fender.

I've found a fender about 25 miles from me for $20 I need to go pick up. I should have it all done and hopefully my pilot jets come by tomorrow.

03-24-2015, 6:57 AM
jetting question. i went up one size on my pilot, two shims under the needle (no one sells aftermarket needle for this bike) and up two sizes on the main. New air filter, new plugs, the exhaust is pictured, wide open with lollipops. It starts up and runs perfect, idles fine, off idle blips of the throttle are perfect. I get no popping on decel at all, i'd say my pilot circuit is spot on. However, in first second and third, it seems to rev out fine, but in higher gears in higher RPM the power just drops off. It revs good to a point then just fees like i added 500lbs to the bike. It doesn't stutter or pop or make any different noises, just wont rev out, slow. In 6th gear it will basically just maintain speed, not accelerate. I haven't gotten a chance to check plugs yet, but does this seem like a lean or rich condition? I'm leaning toward rich.. i'm going to try to remove a shim from the needle and go one size down on pilot. Does this sound like the right steps based on my description? Here's the bike now.http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/front%20end_zpstw5bmpmr.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/front%20end_zpstw5bmpmr.jpg.html)http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/image2%205_zpsfrqvhnfp.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/image2%205_zpsfrqvhnfp.jpg.html)http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/image1%203_zpsi3eblp1d.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/image1%203_zpsi3eblp1d.jpg.html) yeah, she's REALLY dirty

been over two months. riding every day. had to beef up my headlight mount because it kept bending, lost my license plate in North Carolina, bent the mount riding bike in the woods, finally broke... and had to get a new one, camped in Tenessee on a mountain, went through a rear tire and a half already. I love this thread! Keep updating it.

I notice you're in Ohio, whereabouts? Columbus for me.

I'm glad someone likes it haha east palestine, right in the corner of PA, OH, and WV. I've been meaning to head out to Columbus to hang out with friends, but I don't have any friends there yet!

I rode home from work yesterday (20 minutes of twisty awesome road) and the front end felt odd, shakey/wobbley/clunky.. I had already replaced the fork seals and the steering head bearings, everything in the front end was rebuilt and perfect about a month and a half and 7,000 miles ago. So i pulled it apart (13 bolts total lol) http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/IMG_1579_zps9qz8xhmv.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/IMG_1579_zps9qz8xhmv.jpg.html) Everything was fine EXCEPT a super loose fork piston bolt. How it came loose is unknown to me, but it was like 4 complete turns loose... I tightened it up and all is well, but i'll check it again when I put more tires on it, first time replacing the front this year, second rear already. Put it back together and headed out for beers and food http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/IMG_1580_zpspvmpiea8.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/IMG_1580_zpspvmpiea8.jpg.html) http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/IMG_1581_zpss69wsrxs.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/IMG_1581_zpss69wsrxs.jpg.html) Took these on the way home http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/IMG_1586_zps8tff0gga.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/IMG_1586_zps8tff0gga.jpg.html)http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a444/cshaw07/IMG_1585_zpsnhzyey1b.jpg (http://s1036.photobucket.com/user/cshaw07/media/IMG_1585_zpsnhzyey1b.jpg.html)

U still need a fender I got one from a 86 gs that might work can get measurements if your interested its metal and black

06-05-2015, 9:03 PM
Digging the scoot, evilblack is dead on, i use to tie bandanas across the forks. Glad to see you out and about. Reason your probaly not getting a lot of comments is because its not an outragous build. But shit, id ride it!

I have plans for the winter that will be a little crazier, i just bought this bike in Feb and needed a scoot to get around on. Ive never ridden a bike more than this one, its my favorite so far! Itms got some stuff i dont like, like 2 fuel tanks, a fuel pump, and the damned back bone of the frame is the air box... All which i plan to "fix" when the snow flies. The bandana works well enough for me currently, cant believe how much shit it keeps down! Thanks for the comments dudes!

Scoot looks good. I chopped my 04 shadow 1100 for yrs. Wiring harness shorted on the bars and melted the whole thing. Ignition box and all. Honda will sell the diagram for 96 and up for $120. So I made my own. Also pulled the stick air box and went with stacks straight out and up on either side of the tank and opened the exhaust up. Wide open. No fuel pump either. Just a bigger petcock but the 04 is different than the 86. Mine has a 5speed and mechanical clutch w cable and an ugly stock 3.5 gallon gas tank. Shes done 40,000miles So far without the fart sucker intake or fuel pump and with obnoxious open pipes and will still do 140mph. Cant complain about that from a $500 bike.

Digging the scoot, evilblack is dead on, i use to tie bandanas across the forks. Glad to see you out and about. Reason your probaly not getting a lot of comments is because its not an outragous build. But shit, id ride it!

bandanna works so much better than no bandanna, i've been riding the shit outta it! Anyone going to the lowbrow get down at nelsons ledges in July?

I've decided I need an optional rear seat. Debating on making a small frame loop that can be bolted on temporarily for the seat or a P-pad and temporarily strutting the rear when in passenger mode so the passenger isn't on the rear tire and me on a sprung part of the bike. I'm thinking the p-pad and struts would be easier to make and easier to change back out. I personally think strutting a bike is a cop out for a real hard tail, but if it would allow me to toss a seat on my fender and take the girl for a ride instead of using her car. Opinions?
