View Full Version : Question on Dyna ignition

Just got a '77 kz650 last weekend and trying to get it to start. It is kick only so after cleaning carbs i think I hava a short in the Dyna ignition. No spark and found one of the 2 wires that run to the coils from the Dyna has continuity to the frame. Very new to older bikes and there ignitions but pretty sure the dyna only grounds to the back plate? It is the one in my fingers from the Dyna harness http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i237/Whitey818/Mobile%20Uploads/1424897883461_zpstpyjbvky.jpg (http://s73.photobucket.com/user/Whitey818/media/Mobile%20Uploads/1424897883461_zpstpyjbvky.jpg.html)

Two hot leads in (red) one for each pickup/sensor. The black and white wires are signal wires one triggers the 1-3 coil and the other the 2-4.
Should not be grounded to the frame. open short, bad coil, crushed spark plug electrode?.

Thanks Sky, I am thinking the Dyna S ignition is bad, the black wire with the green band shows continuity with frame even if unplugged from the coil. Hoping to have time tomorrow to look over the harness to the Dyna, hope to find a bare spot but I ran my hand over it today before work and didn't feel any bad spot in it. If it is the Dyna bad I might end up hunting down a stock backing plate and put it back to points ignition.

The dyna website has pdfs of the install instructions for all their ignitions including a self test

Thanks again Sky, I just removed it and looked over everything, can't visually see any damage to harness or ignition. Even removed from bike the wire to coil still shows continuity to base plate. I emailed Dyna and will go through the testing tomorrow before work, ran out of time today. If I have to replace it i will probably switch it back to points if I can locate everything needed.
