I know softails ain't old, but there are alot of them out there. So does anyone have any pics of some that have been fixed up like from the seventies or sixties and rodded out not rat rod type. I mean chopped and cut to express some soul. You know stock or sportster tanks, no front brakes, or stripped down to bare necessaties.

I wouldn't really call it old school, but here's a couple versions of my bud Dublf's Night Train.

Now thats what Im talkin about. those are some sweet rides. I am trying my damndest to decide on going black with mine or doing some 70 psychodelic paint sceme like french kiss kustom. And these pics just make it harder, wish I could afford two bikes then i wouldn't have to decide.

I should know, I own one.

Yeah mine is nickel and dimeing me to death cause the last bastard that owned it didn't know a fucking thing about bikes. He let the s.o.b. get repossessed, probably some teenage punk (nothing really against teenagers) that mommy and daddy bought it for to bribe to get good grades or some shit like that. Anyway I have it now and can't afford a camera to take pictures of it. Eventually I strip it down like the other cool looking softails in this thread.

KEEP THE PICS COMING.

all these bikes here look really good!
softails and twincams are good (really) and reliable but they are a little bit boring. I mean you don't have to work on them to let them run good, just like the old ones, pre evo.
I would run them, but not only them!

Thanks Don & Rob, I do miss the bike it ran good and was pretty comfy. One of the Vegas Crew bought it "Crown Motorz" he is on here as well. I got to see the bike last night,it was the first time since I sold it,some changes have been made but it still has the same look and style.

probably one the best depictions of what can be done with a new softail is this from Ryan Reed. I found out he the shop foreman for one of the SO-CAL SPEED SHOPS and could know a thing or two about building customs. He built a 2007 harley softail deluxe that won best bike at the Grand National Roadster Show, I think in either 2008 or 2009, but it did win. Check out his website : www.reedsridesdesign.com and the bikernet page on him as well www.bikernet.com/bikebarn/PageViewer.asp?PageID=2643 I think I posted a pic but not for sure. I will try again.

gdolan80
08-21-2009, 8:34 AM
Ya, that definitely is a good depiction... Softails are an easily available base to start something creative. That bike is beautiful.

donhd
08-21-2009, 12:04 PM
The bikernet article on his bikes(www.reedsridesdesign.com) tells the little details that no one would ever guess that you could do to a stock bike. Like moving the fender down and back 1" to sit lower to the tire. And that has got to be the best dash in production for a stock gauge that I have ever seen. Im hoping that he will sell one. No way I could dream up something that clean.

But Hey, Back the the real and ridden softails out there. KEEP POSTIN PICS GUYS THESE ARE GREAT.

Gdolan that one on your avatar looks pretty cool. Got any more pics of it?

Here's one:
I got it as a "mo-co replica" that was wrecked, made out of a kraftech frame - crate motor etc etc. Stripped it down and used what I could. I have been meaning to "finish" it I guess but that was 4 years ago now;) Lots and lots of miles and any money a saved up just went to keeping it on the road or to run better.

I built this softie back in '99. I have the motor out of it right now, & I'm swappin
the wide ass 5 gal FB's to 3.5 gal FB's I have never liked the 5 gal. tanks on this bike, (look like shit)
but I have a feeling I am going to really miss all that fuel storage when I'm out in the remote deserts
(my favorite place to ride). I will no doubt need to strap on a couple of MSR bottles, But
the bike should look better with out the 16" wide tanks on it.
when I get the motor back in & the new tanks
I'll take a few snap shots, but here's one......

donhd
08-21-2009, 5:05 PM
Yeah I would have to agree on the tank situation. I don't like it either but I have a heavy wrist and love loud exhaust so I too need the extra fuel storage.

I do have two extra sportster tanks that I will probably sell. One has dent in the side and the other is 100% perfect shape. My step mom swapped it off her 05 883 low for the 883 custom tank because it held more gas. the first tank she dropped loading it on a trailer and it caught the handlebar of my dads bike.

Anyone interested?

How/where did you relocate electrics mounted on front of rear fender that were under seat?

Thanks

Rudehog
09-03-2009, 3:27 PM
It's an 89 FXST and most of the electrical was located under the dash panel and the starter relay was located on the lower section of rear fender. So......I gutted the entire harness and kept the starter relay and two circut breakers. I relocated the coil to the top motor mount and used the stock coil cover to house the electrics and ign switch, starter button.

Just read your comment, Murray actually kept the travel in his rear end, which was so little it didn't impede on the King and queen...The seat just slides forward and backward slightly on bumps...My buddy Ryan (green bike) did eat shit on the EDR....and I (blue bike) ended up on the trailer day 1...I didn't strap my jacket right and the belt decided to eat it....

That's why you get sick of them by the time......
I think we got et least 2% of bikes with you kind of style.... Due to that fact I say they suck
The most chopped and nike looking bikes in germany are swinarms....

I posted a pic of my softale a few pages back, but I have since swapped from the big 5 gal tank
to a 3.5 gal tank pictured here. the apes are long gone & now it's got biltwell aces.
I'll post a more current photo with the current bars later. right now the front end is apart because the
brake arm stud on the front brake snapped off & I am repairing it.
the motor is a 93 inch pan with dual plugged std heads, sputhe electronic ignition cam cover/dyna 2000 single fire ,bored out super E carb.
below the frame is a single shock, Actually it is a damper (no spring). the "spring" is instead a torsion bar
that is also the swingarm pivot.

Hey deadbeat. i noticed your foot in this pic is in the mid peg position and you still have your foward controls. Do you know of anyone who makes a set of mid control pegs. I don't want to get rid of my forward controls i just want some place else to put my feet when on long trips, to rest my legs every now and then. Got any suggestions?

For sure dude, I just built my own, but my dad has a mean set of "Freeway pegs" on his shit...I'll locate a source for you. His are based off the primary inspection cover, and a bracket that goes around the front of the tranny, cheap and heavy duty!!!

I've got a set of those mid control peg mounts. I can't recall where I got them, either used or from Custom Chrome or Drag....Got to have just the right set of pipes for the tranny mount side, but the inspection cover mount is a no brainer, you can fab that real easy.

They did mid-mount auxilary pegs, not controls, for FXST. Right side had a nice mount that attached to the end on the gearbox, left hand side was some week assed replacement for the primary inspection cover. They were not meant to be replacements for forward controls.

plate, and angles the peg up and forward. The left side is a hole in an inspection cover, with the peg mount bolted to it with a rubber seal on the inside....which you don't really need either. It is simple, but effective. No idea why HD discontinued them.

The trans case door is different on 2000 and later softails. I have some fabbed up for a TC, if you can weld I can hook you up. I have these mounted to LOWBROW bungs welded to the frame, so they can be removed without leaving an ugly mark.....

Nah the bike isn't mine but i found it some time ago on hd forums. It was in HOTBIKE magazine last year as "pick of the pen". That is a heartland 180 tire kit and the headlight is a Rick Doss 4.5" tri--bar halogen. www.legendsmcs.com in lexington ky has them on his website for like $92 and some change. My bike is my avatar. Hopefully this year Im gonna splurge on a heartland kit. My kids are taken up all my funds. they are 5 & 2 and im gonna have to put them to work soon i guess.

Ha, thanks for the kudos man!!! Yeah, that was one of my earlier looks on my bike, before me and my buds hacked the rear fender struts. In my thread about my bike, I wrote that me and my pops traded off an old triumph for the rake job. One of my pop's friends and my old man used a saws-all to cut the neck, and the dude stick welded the mother super heavy duty....as far as rake goes, they just pulled it out till it looks good!!! It handles like a bear at slow speeds due to the rake and trail, but is fine at 5mph or higher. FUCK IT!!! the rear fender was an old West Coast Choppers fender, I think it was a "Mama-Jama" ...it was the longest fender you could get for your money....needless to say,I got a few fenders from it ROFL LOL LMAO TTYL!!!

We are so low, that we can't realy test the handling...we lean in corners, but the bikes gotta stay upright....offroading is not an option for a bike with less than 3" ground clearance.........so, in conclusion, THEY CHEAP AND COOL LOOKING!!!!!! So that's the main reason for running them.
Plus my pops, used a newer model harley front 17" as his rear, in order to run the crazy ass adventure bike tires....Thanks to Paul Cox's Berserker bike, we've been obsessed with on/off road tire treads for the las t few years!!!

I actually do hate the current paint, so we'll see how long until I "accidentally" crash, and get to paint it again...

It's a Duro HF-903. I love it. It blows my old Dunflop out of the water. It can get a little noisy, but honestly it's tread pattern is tamed down a bit from your typical dual-sport tire, so it handles pretty damn well.

Oh, and the tank cover is a piece my buddy made for me. It's actually fiberglass, but you'd never know it's not metal by looking at it. My metal fab skills are about on par with your average chimpanzee, so I turned to a pal who does custom stereo installs. He makes all sorts of custom dash pieces for crazy stereo installs, so this was a piece of cake for him. I really wanted an aftermarket tank, but since the bike is fuel injected (it's a 2002 btw), I couldn't really do an aftermarket tank. I like the end result. It's different from every other bike in the parking lot if nothing else.

and wingmen13...unless i'm missing what your saying its easy, just attach it to the swingarm so it can move with it

Wingmen13
05-07-2010, 10:00 AM
attaching it to the swingarm and fender? Doesnt that defeat the purpose of the swingarm? The swingarm rotates up and the rear end hits a bump....the fender remains in place. If its bolted to the swingarm and fender that means something has to give....like I said unless I am missing something here...

uh... yes, you are - softail fenders mount with the swingarm as opposed to fl, fx, and xls

billybiltit
05-07-2010, 10:21 AM
from the factory soft tail fenders mount to the frame, the struts have to be cut off to solid mount the fender to the arm.you can modify it to mount the fender to the swingarm but they are not that way originally.
if i could draw your attention to the struts on this softtail you will notice that there are no bolts holding the strut to the frame, because it is made together.

Forgive me for using this analogy - but it works similarly to the the new HD model "Rocker" where the fender (and everything attached) moves along with the swingarm. No passenger, but you can still strap your gear to it. The exception being that ALL these bikes in this thread are infinitely cooler than the Rocker ;)

Wingmen13

okay but it still doesnt answer the question....Im a rigid guy anyway...what brought this up is I was checking out a bike (swingarm) in one of the mags and he had a sissy bar mounted from the swingarm to the fender then i saw this thread and the softtails with the sissy bar attached to the swingarm and again to the fender. So as I understand this....the fender and sissy bar on newer softtails are mounted to the swingarm and fender both which rotate up (or down) after you hit a bump. This would cause the sissy bar to roll forward slighty and then return right?

billybiltit
05-07-2010, 12:50 PM
yes.
it all rides along with the swingarm moving up and back over bumps.so if you gotcha some tail(passenger) on the back she is riding rigid and you(driver)are getting the suspension action.

Only the FXWC.... "rocker" comes from the factory like this. The rest of the softail models come the way you are accustom to - fender mounted to frame horns. Everything here in this thread is home fabricated.

Wingmen13
05-07-2010, 3:23 PM
thats why im asking for the fab piece. I just picked up a 66 in a swingarm (my first one). All my other bikes are rigid frames. It would look cool to put a sissy bar on it for that rigid look. So I guess I was asking the question to figure it out...it still doesnt really make sense to me...

crownmotorz
05-07-2010, 3:52 PM
not quite sure what your asking but it sounds like you are over thinking it, im not trying to be rude. But the soft tail that billy posted is my bike. if you look the swing arm is lowered all the way to the bump stops.. the guy that i bought it from actually cut the bump stops in half so he would have a little travel. it seems that you think the swing arm is going to move a lot but really its only like a 1/4". so if you mount the fender and the sissy bar to the swing arm and lower the rear you will have less than a half inch of travel so you probably wouldn't even know it was moving as you were riding it.

primer
05-07-2010, 4:43 PM
Wingman look at the fender struts on your swingarm and you'll see that they mount
at the frame horns at the same point the top of the shocks do, the wheel moves inside
the fender when it compress's on a bump,if you run a bitch bar from the swingarm
to the fender you stop the action of the shock's,the bar on a swingarm mounts to the
struts,

Wingmen13
05-08-2010, 6:03 AM
that was my point. In essence you make the bike a rigid. Either that or the sissy br bends or rips from the fender. It looks cool as shit to have one on a swingarm frame which is why I asked about it....I just dont think it'll work out to well.

Blink
05-08-2010, 6:09 AM
Negative. The sissy bars you see mounted to swingarms and the fender are swingarm mounted fenders. The frame horns are removed and the fender is attached solely to the swingarm and not the frame.

If you use a strut mounted fender, the sissybar cannot be attached to the fender. It must only be attached to either the fender struts, or the swingarm and be allowed to move freely.

Swingarm mounted fenders move with the swingarm, strut mounted fenders move with the frame.

Hope this helps.

done no issue of being able to throw a set of bag's or a hooker on the back.I'm a
rigid fan and the swingarm bike's I've owned were built before softail's came out
and I'll admit to not knowing how the softail's work.I think with some effort it can be

The best you can really do is spray the whole area down with water first, like the driveway and shit, to get most of the dust stuff to stay down, But, there are always gonna be shit flying around that you can't really prevent from getting on the material you're spraying, so you gotta just hope for the best, and learn how to cut and rub......that is a damn good price for the booth you are renting, hopefully you can keep that hook-up for when you need to spray!!!

Ride safe to the show man, see you there!!!

Yeah, I always spray the driveway down good before shooting the paint. usually I just get
these tiny little specs that show up after a few minues, But today was just out of hand, almost
like a locust invasion of biblical porportions swarmed my ass.

I always wet sanded and buffed anyway to get that glass/mirror thing goin. But; if ya had a leg or something goin down to the "base colors" a bubble or flake could come up over time. Could just call it patina.

Mids too, you did some decent work. Any close ups of the mids, noth sides? Hope you having a blast with the shake down run!

it only has one mid on it, just the brake side. i took a stock style softail aftermarket forward with the master cylinder on it and cut it up. basically took the part where the brake lever pivots and drilled some holes in it to mount to the tranny trap door. then took the part where the master cylinder mounts and bolted it to the other side of the trap door, and welded a piece of steel to make the bracket one so it couldnt move since i could only get one bolt in the master cylinder part. then i had a shift linkage that came with a set of forwards from another project and did some cutting and welding and then i had the linkage from pedal to master cylinder. had to cut up my pipes mounting bracket to make it clear the master cylinder. its pretty rough when you look at it close but it works and the pipes pretty much cover it.

the other side i just mounted the forward control with no peg because i didnt really have the time or a way to make the foot clutch on a mid control. i mean i could do it but it wouldnt be as clean as what i like things to be. so i just ride with my foot on the primary when im not taking off or shifting. the foot on the primary is alright for about the first 75 miles then it sucks. pretty much rode the whole way with my left leg on the passenger peg. right leg is pretty good on the mid for about 500 miles then its pretty much pissed off.

the shop where i chopped this bike had a welder a grinder a sawzall a vice and hand tools. 55 year old chopper heads can teach you how to do alot with a little.

"We've been doing so much with so little for so long that we can do almost anything with almost nothing."

all in all i learned forwards on a softail are way easier to do and way more comfy on long rides. mids are good for style and curves and short distances.

ill try to get some pics up to day...well actually im not really doing anything so im sure i can do it here in a bit. lol.

I built a metal splash pan on the underside of the swingarm and mounted everything there. Need to remove the oil tank, but you can flip the ecm and plugs and all and mount them there. When you reinstall the oil tank it hides the whole works....bit of work but makes it clean. Keeps everything hidden between the oil tank/trans/shocks...stays dry most of the time too.

Heartlands I have worked on leave the fender height close to stock, but it is a flatter radius. If you remove the primary cover on your bike you will find a chain..... unless it has been converted to belt. If it has been belt converted you will need to cover the impeller on the start shaft. You can hack up part of your primary cover and make one. Pretty sure wingmen13 had a thread showing similar work.
Hope this helps. Heartland kit is wicked pricey unless you got a great settlement. I think retail is $1800 or so minimum...but quality is good.

Just lowered my nighttrain something like 4 inches....used some of my combat pay money and splurged on one of those SAS lowering kits from customcyclecontrols. Went on real easy, was easy to wire and I had it done within 1 hour. Kit was pricy (I got it for 1300 sells for 1600) but seems good so far. I only had two issues (one if em my fault)
1. The studs for the shocks are .625 as are the hiem joints so it can be kind of a tight fit. The studs dont get tightened laterally the way the stock shocks do, they have about 1/4 inch lateral play.

2. Before you call them and say the kit didnt lower your bike....take it iff the jackstand (yep I did it).

I also took Kingdeadbeats advice and relocated the ECM. Real easy to do and didnt require me to cut and splice any wires. I took the ecm off and the panel is bolts to. Then I fabricated a plate to mount behind the oiltank (above the alarm loc, in front of fender) and welded the panel to the piece I made. After I replaced the bolts with longer ones I put the ECM on the mounting plate. I routed the harness through the frame rail down to that location. After I plugged it back into the ECM, I bolted it to the oil bag.
Pretty easy. It allowed me to fab a bracket for my seat without having to weld anything to the frame (I used the two holes on the frame rail).
Now I just gotta figure out something cool for a taillight and set my fender up to mount on the swingarm.

evobuilder

you can make it yourself.... I did and it really wasn't that bad (but I do have a TIG... so that made it easier.... or

you can buy a fender that bolts onto the swingarm from Heartland. Not to bad on prices and really is bolt on (you have to drill and tap a couple holes, but that is not a big mod.

My main issue is cutting those swingarms off the frame. See Im keeping everything off the bike so if I ever sell it some asshole can take it back to stock.

Great looking bike. 3 questions for ya, what front forks are those, where did the mid controls come from and what year bike did it start out as?

Panhead49
10-20-2010, 12:27 PM
Front end is from -95 Sportster Narrow Glide. Stock length.

Those mid controls are from Dyna. The seller said that they came from 2005 Dyna. You have to weld the brackets (we used 1/2" thick brackets) to the frame and we also drilled a hole to inner primary and checking cover. The original Dyna shifting mecanism worked with the stock -89 transmission.

The bike is FXSTS -89 and it came from Miami. Now in Finland.
