I picked this 1975 XT500 up for $200. Its pretty much complete, except for a seat, a side cover, and a coil. Im gonna start this build by lowering the seat position.

2 stroke? dude you are becoming the master of these little lane splitters. Gona follow this one to the end as well.

The XT's were 4 stroke enduros. They are often coverted into flat trackers, as they are a reletively cheap way into competition. It would make a sick little street tracker.

Keep us updated on this little gem. It looks like its gonna be a lot of fun.

Im a big fan of your sporty and the sr500... this should be interesting!

thanks for the support, i appreciate it. i had to ditch the sporty unfortunately, but these Yamaha 500's are becoming an obsession.

the seat rails are lowered and welded. i need to make a seat, but my sr seat is a pretty close fit. i may loose the fat rear tire and go with something skinny.

I need one of these little guys. Looks like a fun neighborhood cruiser.

Pardon my ignorance, but are your rear shocks on up-side down?

bforbes

They could be upside down, I don't know, They're coming off anyways.

I've just always seen the adjustment notches on the bottom.

bforbes
05-06-2010, 10:56 AM
yeah me too. all the writing on them is right side up, so i think they were just made with the adjusters up.

I'm going to be running this 21 in the rear to match the front. I'm going as skinny as possible with this bike.

I didn't use that green tank if you want it back...

bforbes

I think I'm gonna go with a west eagle tank. I've got the tank above with a wide tunnel if you want it for a blast frame.

I got the x's swing to fit, but it wasn't bolt on. I had to trim down the pivot on both sides. I like the added length. I think its just what it needed.

Does this sprocket make my ass look big?

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e66/brianforbes/16106f3b.jpg

I'm not sure yet what sprocket ill use on the front to be able to run this on The street.

I really liked the dunlop trial tires that came on the xt, but they were way too beat. I tracked down these shinko tires and they are such a close match.

nice.. what sprocket is that off of?? Honestly I dont think you'll be able to make a front sprocket big enough that will fit inside the case to keep up with that rear one..
You might have a wheelie machine that screams in 5th gear going 45mph! haha... I hope Im wrong and you can get it to work.. sure looks cool...
this is great inspiration to get my CR500 chop goin.

finally found some time to get a little done on this thing. i lowered the front 2", and i also found these bars at a local salvage house for $10. they're adjustable, so i can have em wide, pull em in narrow, or anywhere in between.

bforbes

thanks man. i really dig the look of this sprocket, but ill need a serious tensioner to pick up the slack if i can even fit a proper front sprocket that would allow for normal driving speeds.

bforbes

its a seat i made for my sr, i just had it on here to see how it would fit. i made it from an old sportster 2 up seat.

i finally got the rear wheel figured out. i ended up having to go with 20x42x12 bearings, and had the center bore of the hub drilled out to 42mm, made a couple spacers, and mounted it up. i also lowered the forks about 2.5 inches.

Nice. I just pulled out my old Honda mt250 and have been thinking about chopping it a bit. It was completely stripped to make a motocross bike back in the day, so it's not original. You're giving me some ideas.

Nice XT, I just picked one up for pretty cheap. Any updates? So is that an XS650 swingarm? Did you do that just for the extra length?
