View Full Version : Fitting The Skinniest Front Tyre (As Safely as Possible)

Hey Guys,

I'm running a thick rear tyre (Firestone 450-18) and I'm about to buy a front tyre that I want to be as narrow as possible.

The dilemma - How narrow is too narrow?

What's the ideal ratio for front tyre vs rear tyre?

Avon Speedmaster Tyre Dimensions:
300-19 W 3.1" D 25.2"
325-19 W 3.4" D 25.9"

Firestone Deluxe Champion Tyre Dimensions:
450-18 W 4.84" D 27.4"

I've had my eye on Avon Speedmasters for a while. I want 300-19, but I'm evaluating whether or not 3.25 19 would be more balanced. The concept of a super thick rear vs a super skinny front sounds a bit sketchy. Then again, choppers, harleys, bobbers etc do this all the time (500+ rear tyres etc).

By the way this is for an SR250. The 250 section doesn't have a technical discussion area. SR400/500 advice will be considered also.

ZId run the 3.25, but thats just me... Skinny looks better on taller wheels like a 21 or 23 incher...

I was running a 120/90-19 (4.75") modern tyre on the back and a 3.00-21" Avon SM up front and it was fine, just changed to a 4.00/19" Avon SM rear because I got it cheap, haven't riden on it yet but it looks alot better. Not sure about a smaller diameter wheel though, too narrow may make it look a bit like a toy! Just go with your gut and see what it looks like.

as said above tall/skinny works well. since your front is only an inch taller than your rear AND the firestone is a tall tire i think even the 325-19 is gonna be on small side. i'm going back and forth on this now looking for a 19" front to run on a cb360 project thats got a Duro copy of the Pirelli MT53. i just got a 350-18 of the above to see how i liked it(the 400-18 is considerably more). if i run the 350-18 rear i want to run a 300 or 325-19 front. if i don't find a 19" front wheel i'm happy with i'll probably run a similar size in the 18"...ken....

300 looks fine on a 19, it doesnt really look a whole lot skinnier than a 325 anyways.
