Went to a shop the other day and it was a rare 80deg. out here. Talked to the guys for about 15min. and came out to kick the Bobber over. She kicked back and my knee went up lightning fast. Scared the hell out of me. So I kicked it over a couple times with the mag off and next kick she caught and purred. Next morning I had a strange pain by my hip at first when I got up. Walked it off and alls good.

Yeah man, kicker blow back. My dad has always said about the old Iron Sportys we have that you gotta be careful cuz they like to kick back. One time I was drag racing his 77 and it decided to come back on me and tagged me just above the back of my knee. Left a giant nasty looking bruise and hurt to walk for a few days.

It's also super fun when they don't connect at all and just kick through leaving your knee hyper-extended and aching.

Ive learned to kick using the entire weight of my body, thus far no problems

Absolutely nothing more evil to kick than an Iron Head with a Fairbanks except a big inch Iron Head with a Fairbanks! Mine broke my ankle one afternoon, over the next two years it left three big dents in the bone between my ankle and knee, kicked back so hard that it broke the kicker shaft in half, kicked the heal off a brand new pair of high dollar boots. And at other times it fired right up no problem. If you have to ride one in the rain get a hair dryer and dry the mag carefully the next morning.

My Bobber has a 96in. Evo with a Joe Hunt Mag. I have to kick with my left leg as my right ankle has been fused twice.

Don't even get me started. This was last year at NH bike week, through a knee high riding boot yet! I was speaking in tongues for a good couple minutes. I used to start up standing on the right side of the bike and kicking with my right foot. A few times it pogo stick'd me off and my left shin would come down on the bike...... I don't do that no more.

Yeah that's the kind of dents I'm talking about! Mine was 67 cid. and 13.5 compression and quite capable of turning over backwards at 70 if you didn't back off a little when you shifted, this caused more damage than the kicker!

I just picked up a 69 slabside kick only... Im not stranger to kicking bikes... but my jap bikes start 1st 2nd kick at the most...

I went out to start the shovel in the morning the other day... Kicked it to prime it a few times... Super b... Switched it on and went for a good kick. Didnt catch... full weight down on right knee. It hyperextended and snapped back...

I was on the ground doing the peter griffin... ahhhh... iiisshhhhh... for like 15 minutes...

Still limping... anyone know what happens when they dont catch? Felt like the engine sparked and popped right as the kicker went down... must have disengaged the kicker right at the top of the kick...

My old shovel did that once in a great while. The mechanism has to set the pawl in there and if you catch it wrong you`re in trouble. Just try to make sure it has time to get in there. My Bobber has never done it and it`s an after market set up. For what that`s worth.

I put oil and gas all eclectics are good to go. Jump on and do the kick start shovelhead routine. A couple of prime kicks ect. Get the kicker arm to 9 o'clock and kick right through to the fucking ground. Damn I am glad I skateboarded for 15 years and my knee is somewhat use to going the wrong way. Cause that could have ended up badly. Before I go and take the kicker cover off. I adjust the clutch rod in and the kicker gear doesn't grab at all. I loosen the clutch rod out, it grabs but still slips. It feels like it wants to grab but slips.

I pull the plug drain the oil and I see metal shavings in the oil..Fuck I say.
So I take the kicker cover off. Look at the gear inside the cover first looks good. Look at the inside and I see the culprit the kicker gear isn't missing teeth but there are mashed up pretty good. That’s where the metal shavings were from. And upon further look it appears(kicker gear) to be a china made gear not a us.

So I was slightly pissed. thought I was ready to take her out on the road instead kicking rocks. I do a bunch of research on here and shovelhead usa. About the price difference in the Baker (Klassic Kicker Gears 140-64) and some knock off's on the bay for 30$. Well after thinking about it for a while and reading more about members hyper-extending I bought a set of the baker 140-64's(last night). cost 200$ more but I figured of all the places to skimp out. Being a kick only bike, the kicker was not 1 of them.

I was knocked back about 10 feet trying to start a 1950 BSA before I understood how the compression release worked.

my friend has a 64 sporty kicker. higher comp big cam and its a bear to kick. i was always scared to kick it as im scrawny. nick would always kinda shy away and finally get it where he wanted it and kick it but once in a while it would kick back. someone walked by him one day and said dude kick it all the way through and the gears pass themselves and it wont keep grabbing when its all the way down. isnt this how all kickers are supposed to be?

I cringed just reading this. I'm not a grey beard at all and I ride my evo to work all the time. I rode the ironhead to work one day and of course the one time my coworker comes out talking to me while I start my bike it kicks me back. After jumping around and moaning like little sally shallow throat I rode on with him laughing his nuts off.

when I bought my new shitbox, 1st kick went to the ground I was ape shit , not only that but those brass kickers with the fucking nut on the end, welp they are fucking junk as I snapped the kicker shaft and fucked my knee up.
I learned my lesson a very long time ago on a sporty even though that sporty was 4 years old a 1975 the kicker was fucked.
so If my above pic don't change ya mind on buying good baker gears kiss your knee good bye.
kicking with the left foot looks so fucking queer
buy the baker set...................

I've scars on my leg from kicking over my old 450 quad, it'd tear some shit up. I don't feel bad at all having a starter on my bike :D

Winters in the northeast seem to do fun things to different types of metal in your rebuilt Panhead lower end mixing Andrews, s and s, and old harley oem parts. Resulting in expansion and the reduction of cam end play. Couple this with being an asshole, shaved wisecos, upped cam, increased compression for the "ghetto stroke".

Anyway. January buffalo NY, and you make the linkert cough with a very tight cam and you get the full force of the engine on kickback. You don't walk for a week

haha I have an Indian and know all about the linkert cough and kickback, thank god it's got low compression.

Thanks for all the laughs. Buncha fuckin' comedians!

All y'all do know that yer supposed to keep yer knee bent all the way through the stroke, right? With a bent knee, alls ya get is yer leg pushed up when it kicks back (No flying over the bars for me, thanks!). And if the kicker slips, with a bent knee all ya do is laugh and walk away.

Been kickin' 'em to life for many decades now and I have never had a kicker related injury. It's all in the details.

I'm gonna go kick my bored and stroked Shovel and have a nice ride. Later...

my bike is soooooo hard to kick, The other day I was kicking Her &
the key that holds the kicker gear on the shaft , totally sheared in half
from the extreme pressure exerted onto It from my awesome right leg.

I get a kick watching others trying to kick my bike to life. One girl at the bar
insisted that I let Her give it a try. The only thing that moved was Her ASS, while
the kick pedal remained stationary.
