The CHP is holding my 1970 Shovelhead pending an upcoming court date.

In order to prove that my VIN is valid. I need as many examples of VIN stamps from the year 1970 as I can get.

If you have a 1970 Shovelhead, could you please email me a picture of your VIN stamp?

dean1565@hotmail.com

Thank you. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I'm just guessing bro, but I don't think anybody's gonna want to send you a copy of there vin #'s. Now I could be wrong but who knows.

What is their issue with your vin? You can find a vin decoder here:

Was your bike numbers matching? Did you have a title?

why can't the chp go into the database and find any registered 1970 harley vins? how about having harley confirm the vin?

i'm no lawyer, but how are digital pictures from random people on the internet gonna confirm anything to the chp?

There is one on Chris Haynes' site:

http://vintageamericanmotorcycles.com/v/Numbers/1970FLH.JPG.html

That is the number on the motor, the frame number should match, if they are still together.

Just curious, why did they confiscate your bike?

Not 100% but I'm pretty sure the vin on the motor is an abbreviated version of the frame which the title follows

9 digit vin on both frame and engine, they match for 1970 through 1979, with the exception of some of the '79's:

'81 and up is when they started abbreviating the number on the engine, that's when they went to a 17 digit vin.

As much as you might find delight in other peoples dilemma... I know Dean personally and am familiar with the situation. It's a screwed up place to be in for any bike owner believe me you.

That being said, let me add this to the mix; If you look at the VIN / Motor number index for 1970's shovelheads in say Clymer Manuals, you'll note that when the model year 1970 is specifically listed there's a (?) question mark as if not all 1970's were identified by xxxxxxxH0. It's pretty clear 71's are H1, 72's are H2, etc., etc., but 1970's have (for lack of a better explanation) no absolute conformity in the "H0" numbering system. Yes, it might be 99.9% conformism, but there's still that "?" to deal with. So what I think Dean is looking for is examples.

I don't have my Clymer manual handy or I'd shoot a picture of it, but most of you shovelhead owners have one so check it out.

Ive also found that a lot of information out there is questionable... like this image below which states the "H" is for "Harley" when in other documentation I've read it merely stands of the decade (of the 70's) which is why it then changes for the 80's..

If you can get permission to take (high res, BRIGHT, CLEAR) pics of your VIN stampings you could post them to Jockey Journal etc for the restoration fanatics to weigh in as they often do on other number discussions.

If you can't get permission to photograph your own impounded motorcycle for purposes of gathering evidence that may interest your lawyer.

You could also host 'em on Photobucket or similar. You want pics clear enough that the viewer can zoom to a higher level of detail than they can see with the naked eye, which is easy to do.
