does any body know of any differences between the ironhead years?looking for a engine for a 1976 will a earily 80's work?thanks for any info

In 1977 the engine's sump shape was changed. This will probably cause interference with the bottom rails of the pre-'77 frame. I think the '77+ bottom frame rails were dimpled to clear. I've never tried this swap myself. Only aware of the changes from "book learnin'", so wait for somebody else to chip in.

Yes it will bolt in, the 77+ changed pumps to a smaller one that doesnt need to be timed. The bevel in the frame is just longer than the pump. This allows you to remove the oil pump without pulling the motor.

was the 1976 the last year that the shifter pin was on the right side? I think they ran a linkage to the left side to make it a left side shift. or was that just 73-75? The 76 roller I just bought has a different looking frame from other ironheads that ive seen.

I believe 75 and 76 have the crossover linkage.
