so , i was cruisin craigslist this morning & ran across this add "70's xs 650---$200.-". just went to pick it up & the first thing the guy tells me is that hes into it for a hundred & will take that. done deal. its got a long ways to go , but the hardtail looks great & the welds are all solid. this should be fun....i hope. ive got tanks , seats , fenders , etc. already. gonna' drop the motor off to one of my tattoo clients on monday morning for a rebuil , then its off to dmv. the guy said it hasnt been registered in over 10 years, cant find the title ,& doesnt really remember what year it is , just that he "thinks" its an early 70's model. anyone on here know how to decode the vin? hel if all else fails , anyone got a clean title neck that they want to sell?
anyways , ill be tearing the frame down for media blasting tomorrow............http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e126/inkspot_tat2/default%202/P1010107.jpg

yeah , i tried all over the 'net , but all of the decoders say that i should have a 17 digit vin. Mine is only a 10 digit one. From what i gather from the forums , that puts my bike as a pre- 77 model. I cant seem to narrow it down any closer than that. Id just like to have as much info as possible in hand when i step into dmv on monday morning. Just wanna cover my ass as much as possible, ya know?

Stared at these pics & couldnt quite put my finger on it until know....... Does this thing seem raked to anyone else but me???............................................. . Gonna have to run out to the shop first thing in the morning & take some measurements..........

Yes, it seems raked for sure. Just imagine if those forks were stock length, seems like the front tubes would be on the ground. Know what I mean?

Yeah , its pretty low , but those pics can be a little deceiving , the grass is pretty long right there.

It looks like you have a 4 bolt tensioner on it. That would make it a 256 series motor. Does it have a spot for a electric start? If it does it could be a TX. If not it could be a XS1 or XS1B. If I am way off and it has a 6 bolt tensioner it is a 447 series motor and you have a XS (they are all considered XS motors, just the model of the motorcycle didn't get the XS name till 74 I believe). Here is a page that may help.
