Well hello Gents and Gals,

Recently found a 1995 Sportster 1200XL off craigslist for $3,000. I looked into it and found it had 8,400 miles on it. Not a bad deal right? I'm thinking of keeping the soft tail for a bit and just simply making it my own. Want to change the handle bars to H bars, new seat and chop chop chop that rear fender. Also gonna relocate the tail light and license plate to a shock or axle mount. And here we go.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m20/Christopher_Finnegan/10001474_10202727384179267_604569260_n_zpsf41026ed .jpg (http://s100.photobucket.com/user/Christopher_Finnegan/media/10001474_10202727384179267_604569260_n_zpsf41026ed .jpg.html)

First things first drained all the oils, brake fluid and all. Noticed the brake line were those stock copper style with rubber cover and saw one had been pinched. So i ordered some Goodridge stainless steel ones. Then it was onto the handle bar swap. Purchased some Biltwell H-Bars really easy bolted right onto the triple tree screws.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m20/Christopher_Finnegan/1010687_10202727384259269_2040516502_n_zpsb7b7742c .jpg (http://s100.photobucket.com/user/Christopher_Finnegan/media/1010687_10202727384259269_2040516502_n_zpsb7b7742c .jpg.html)

Then took off that stock air filter system and replaced it with a Arlen Ness Big Sucker Kit. Added 21% more horespower.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m20/Christopher_Finnegan/10170971_10202727386339321_131264955_n_zpsc3cf5a1f .jpg (http://s100.photobucket.com/user/Christopher_Finnegan/media/10170971_10202727386339321_131264955_n_zpsc3cf5a1f .jpg.html)

Next i moved onto wiring up my license plate mount and tail light onto the shock mount. Looked a lot better, now jus to chop that rear fender and fender struts. Also took it for a quick ride today ran great.

Need some help with a good turn signals cant decide for the rear fender struts.?

ChrisFinn22

Yeah thats pretty much the plan Bernie. I'm not to great with wiring schematics and living in NY you need everything turn signals, mirrors but i feel like I have too much stuff on my bars, want to reduce it all somehow.

Search the forum for "sporty rewire".

There is a very kick ass, very detailed thread with wiring schematics that makes it super simple based on what you want to run. What I did and the same way they do it in the thread is to get the stock wiring diagram from the factory manual and just highlight the shit you need and cut the rest. I'm in the middle of a rewire myself and once I got it all apart and matched it up to the wiring diagram it was cake figuring out what I needed to remove and what I needed to keep.

Just recently got a set of Progressive 11.5 in shocks off craigslist and ordered a bunch a part off DKcustoms.com Picked up tank lift kit, iginition relocation kit, and horn relocation kit, and wire location kit awesome bolt on stuff for us guys without the monster garage.

Not everyone has the welder/drill press/ lathe ect. But as long as you enjoy what you're doing its cool.
Mild mods/bolt on stuff is actually good this time of year becaus the bike is never apart, you can ride the same day you work on it as opposed to an actual "build" where the bike has to come apart.

Yeah exactly, Just ordered some Biltwell banna seat and some new grips from them too. Can't wait fo the mail on monday and tuesday.

i ordered a DK customs Ignition Relocation kit since all there other kits worked so well. Yeah they do not work on my year bike at all. I ended up Relocating my ignition to the right side of the battery, its hidden and loos different. I'll post up pics tomorrow. Along with that I snapped my belt so Lowbrow Chain conversion kit is on the way. Hopefully I'll be good to go soon.

You'll need 1-7/8" socket and it's opposite thread so roll the bikes front tire up against a wall and use a breaker bar. If you're not stretching the frame tho, why not put a belt on and be done, they're great as long as you leave the belt guard on.

ChrisFinn22
04-15-2014, 2:53 PM
I just trust chains more than anything, Belts are too weak weak with my belt guard.

halfday
04-15-2014, 3:47 PM
I wasn't saying a belt guard makes a belt stronger lol, I just see a lot of guys take them off to get a stripped down look and pick up rocks and stuff. You seem to be doing a lot of cosmetic stuff and I thought the chain was something that you felt looked more old school cool to you. I won't post in your "build"thread anymore, I've done a lot of stuff with Sporties and maybe I shouldn't put my two cents in anymore, sory, have fun

ChrisFinn22
04-16-2014, 8:53 PM
all good brother, i like the input. I like hearing different ideas. Chain is for look and function though.

ChrisFinn22
04-18-2014, 6:32 PM
Well i purchased a chain conversion kit from Lowbrow customs and here we go, mind my belt snapped already so it made it a bit harder.
First i ditched the old belt drive and put on the sproket wasn't too hard but you have to have some muscle to get it off.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m20/Christopher_Finnegan/IMG_3046_zps11d58208.jpg (http://s100.photobucket.com/user/Christopher_Finnegan/media/IMG_3046_zps11d58208.jpg.html)
Next came the next sproket, since my belt was snapped i couldn't put the bike against a wall so I had to impervised and it worked out.http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m20/Christopher_Finnegan/IMG_3047_zps1518e095.jpg (http://s100.photobucket.com/user/Christopher_Finnegan/media/IMG_3047_zps1518e095.jpg.html)
then after that i put it all together and just need to break the chain and set the tire all the way to the front and adjust. Not a bad day, i took her inside since its so windy out here in NY and lots of sand blowing around still. Working on the rear fender now, have a scorpion king and queen on the way. And oh yeah i painted my exhaust flat black which turned out great. Very productive day!

You have to of spent about $220.00 on the chain conversion and a chain. You can get sport belts for $75.00 free ship on ebay. Just sayin', if you just kept it belt you would have at least $150.00 to buy a cool little gas tank.

ChrisFinn22
04-22-2014, 5:56 AM
chain conversion was $160, and chain was $40. A good decent kevlar belt, that wont snap after a rock hits it is $180 for this bike. I like the look of the chain and the feel, I've sold almost a $700 of parts I have taken off this bike. So I have some room left left for a tank, not sure which one to go with just yet still deciding what guys think. I was thinking maybe a Frisco tank?

Starting to look good. Shame you cut your rails tho. With the fender you ended up with you could of left them. A swingarm mounted fender set up can get that fender real close to the tire.
Your passenger will never forgive you tho.
It's taking shape, keep up the good work

Well I've been away now for the past month for training, but I am back and finally evened out that paint. Seems everyone is doing the flat black thing but there is a reason behind mine. Doing a memorial for my bud TJ who was KIA last year, and it requires a black tank. Then i got caught in the rain one day and never again without a front fender. So i threw that back on. Ended up cleaning up the bike since its all apart, Here is the process of it. Enjoy.

i would save ching and get it painted. i like the look and the stance, but i have always hated flat black jobs on most bikes, looks like a cop out. the chain conversion looks great. i also think the lack of fender struts looks a little weird since your running a full fender on the back (or most of one) have you mocked up a short ducktail fender to try? anyways this is just my opinion not that you asked for it. :) oh and how are you jetted for those drag pipes?

ChrisFinn22
05-31-2014, 9:04 PM
Yeah i'm actually not in love with the paint looking to do something a bi tmore radical. And i'm gonna add my rear turn signals soon to the rear fender struts. My lady rides with me so I need the long fender now, But still running the stock jet size. I cleane dthe carbs all up and not a problem so far with backfire.

ChrisFinn22

Little update. Put a new 2 Gal tank on it, turn signals, found some old AMF HD stickers at a local garage I picked up for $5. Rebuilt the carbs and upgraded the jets and pilots. Made a huge difference, bikes mid-range power is a lot better now.

Can you comment on the DK relocation kits you used? Easy to use? Moving wiring around was simple? I just happened on their site today and got super stoked on using some of their kits to clean my ride up some. I'm on the road (semi-permanently?) so I'm limited to basic hand tools for now.

As far as the DK kits I'm looking at go: speedo relocation, coil relocation, horn replacement and tank lift. Which lift did you use? Looks like a good height you have. And did you get the deluxe version aka the rear lift?

Thanks!

I forgot to mention. I have an '03 xlh1200. Still have the 100th anniversary tank on it. Not in a rush to replace the tank with other changes on deck first.

Also, choice snag on your bike. Looks like you got a good deal on a very clean looking ride.

I used a lot of there Relocation kits, Horn,Coil, and the 2.5 tank lift. Reason i did the 2.5 is the bottom of the gas tank doesnt hit the backbone on the frame. and yes everything was very easy, every kit took about 10-30 mins to do. And i didnt do the deluxe version. wish i did cause my tank is a 2.4 and only can use about 1.8 of it because of the lift.

For your speedo relocation. On Amazon and Ebay you can get an Autometer tach bracket for like 15 bucks, they work great.
