I am picking up a 78 Honda CX500 this week end... I am pretty much stealing it, the guy wanted me to help him put some chrome on his chopper... My wife won't let me have a second bike, so this is going to be a chop and flip bike... any suggestions on what to do with such a tall shaftie?

There is a little surface rust on the tins and shocks, but the frame looks to have minimal rust. There is also a dent in the tank next to the seat.

The kids are using this "brat" word latly, haha, maybe that would be good for a flip.

I like the brat idea... Cafe's aren't found around here much...and when they do pop up from time to time, they are going for very little... bobbed bikes sam to be going for more than a good restoration. So I think that the "Brat" would be the way to go.

What is that? An opposing V or something? What is that cylinder arrangement called?

its a twisted V, the only bikes i know of that run it (I could be wrong) is the Honda CX/GL 500/650

i believe Moto Guzzi has the same setup, opposed V-twin. the gl/cx 500 were amazingly tough bikes. heavy and ugly, but they were tough and run forvever

I have seen a few Cool looking GL/CX's over on the CX forum.. slap a shadow tank ont ot it, and some kind of chopped fender..drop the back end several inches.. ad a solo seat.. they look great... still not my first choice in bike...picked it up mainly to chop and flip.

i remember one from a back issue of the horse. it was bad ass. i think the guy converted it to a chain with some fancy doo-hickey. i haven't seen very many cool cx500's, but the potential is there. make us proud. if i find the issue i'm thinking of, i'll let you know.

These look good if you stay away from any route unless you have $$$$ to pour into it.
My friend rides one of these, its fast and handles super good, he sort of sis a cafe/ bratt / sport bike thing - came out nice and looks good.

He made a thin seat, didnt cut too much off the back and tuc n rolled it. Repainted the tank and cleaned up the engine. Moed some electronics around, blacked out the rims and changed the handlbars amd a few other things, all in all just rally cleaned it up- it came out nice and its a daily - cool bike if done right

Cool to see something so different chopped...shafties aint easy. I hear the same about them being bullet proof and such. I have an 81 that I'm building a trike out of for the g/f. Shadow tank some kawi fenders hardtailing in a toyota rear end. She don;t like me being gone every weekend with the boys on our chops til 3 am. This way she only be bitching when she has to stop for gas.LOL

I have one, a 79 and love it. (they also made this motherfucker a turbo stock, what a trip that must be to ride)

I agree with the brat comment, don't chop it, brat it!

fun as hell little bike, once it's moving it's nimble as a motherfucker.

If you decide you don't want it, I'll take it. (insert evil grin)

honda also made the st 1100 and 1300s with a very similar engine, although it's hidden by bodywork. the engine is called either a twisted twin or a flying V by most people. I call mine a hondaguzzi.
