View Full Version : honda shadow spirit springer

none of this would have been possible with out maveric from shadowriders.com doing a write up years ago. thanks.

This mod will allow you to run any one inch big twin front end you can dream of or afford, i just came a cross a springer.

to start from the begining:
I found a 6" over springer on craigslist. I had only one afternoon to grab it and i happened to be at a titty bar before noon that day. I would love to hear what that dude thought of my buddy and I stumbling into his house. I intended that springer on a few ideas, none of them for the shadow. Two years later I had to put it on the shadow. I got told by a dude I met at tar ball run 4, my bike was cool but the frame is so ugly. He hit the nail on the head, at the core these hondas have an engineered modern ugy ass frame. I went home that weekend inspired and stairing at the ugly dna springer i bought drunk, I knew it was a match for an ugly frame, add an ugly headlight and ugly may be cool. I sure think it is.

This mod is not hard if you use your head. I havent spent much, nor has anything ended up not working the first time. I used basic tools and ingunity. The welding excluded but still, watch some you tube and borrow a friends flux core and learn about grinding, you should be fine. Common sense not being so common these days, be careful.

I trusted mavericks numbers...thanks for having good numbers.

I contacted ratholecycles@yahoo.com his name is ray, he made me a deal over the phone, we talked numbers, he sent me all the right shit. I would persuade you to buy from him if you can.

He took a neck slug and turned down 5 1/8 to 1.634. He also sells bearings, races, cups, and dust seals. He pressed my races in the cups for me as well.

I grabbed a 5/8th by 2ft piece of all thread from work with three inch washers. My press.

get the bike secured and start the tear down

found out maverick is a good guy:jamming:

first mock up, you can see my stand, 2x12 with tie towns and a floor jack, oh and that this is gna be badass.
after hack sawing my cups, the lower need cut off wheels to finish the job, be careful of your radiator.

have your new neck in the freezer, it will shrink it to make pressing easier

so now is where i differ from maverick, hes got a great idea to keep everything straight and good, however i paid to have stuff machined, as long as that is the surface im pressing my cups into im fine, hence no drill press rape.

this is where a cood line and a solid cut make the difference

I made a patch out of cardboard and then transfered it to thin metal i grabbed from work, fit so good it stayed on its own

bearing cups where also frozen to aid on install

Great write up and nice ride man. I dig the "ugly" look. I am looking to put a springer on a 96 vn800. This gave me some ideas. Thanks.

Looking good billy. I'm in the fence still on a springer, wish they made a narrower front end than the stock.

Its in the works, trying to find a narrow glide. You ever in OK hit me up, might need a hand with it.
