Okay I've been silent for a while now and I feel its time I contribute to the cult. I have been riding a 1200c for the past three years and I wanted something to wrench on since I felt the bike I was riding was too perfect to modify. I found this 73 XLCH and the price was right so I picked her up in august and this is how she sat when I brought her home.

This is my first build and I'm not very knowledgeable in motorcycles so I felt like this was a perfect project to get me introduced into modifying and maintaining a bike. When I brought her home she was only firing on 1 cylinder and she didn't have a rear brake. I swapped out the ignition coil, changed the plugs, fluids and cleaned up the contacts on the regulator. I found a busted wire on the regulator, fixed that and she ran a whole lot better.

The kicker pedal was hitting the muffler so I figured I had to change this crap out as she sounded like a jap bike and I needed to replace the old bendix carb.

I placed an order with and in a few days I received these

The pipes I ordered were mcm they said made in America but it turned out they were just chromed in America. I wasn't too happy with the burrs on the end of the pipe.. Its like they saw cut it then sent it off to the chromer.

So I rode her and tinkered with her for a another month or so to get the motor and carb dialed in perfect still riding around without a rear brake and decided to chop her this winter. Here is a shot of the bike with the drags on but with the old carb still on.

So fast forward to the middle of October and I took the bike up to my shop for more room to work and to have access to some better tools.

Broke her down a bit then hoisted her up to the table, sorry for the blurry pictures my camera is an oldie.

Almost all the way apart.

I ordered a led sled 2" stretch for my chop. I chopped the frame on the bandsaw. Here she is chopped and mocked up waiting welding.

I was kind of worried about the gaps between the frame being to wide as you can see here. The gaps ranged from .200 to .375 between the 3 tubs with the top tube being the worst.

As of this weekend this is how she sits as is.

Looks great man. I really dig the blue for some reason. Are you running that tank and paint?

11-19-2013, 9:20 PM
Actually the paint was rattle canned and it looks kinda bad up close. It's orange peeling a bit and the previous owner had some bad encounter where the gas came out of the cap while he was riding and dis colored the top a bit. Could have been a venting issue? I'm not too keen on the old cam style filler neck. So iI actually just bought a Frisco style tank with the newer style gas cap.

Lookin good.

OWW!, I like that frame work, very neat indeed!Looks almost factory which is a good thing in my mind.

I'm not sure if I should take the chromed one to the chromer to get that little bit of chrome off or just try to sand it off.

i think its about time to resurrect this thread.....

After I powder coated the forks I had to mock up with some of the parts I had to just get a feel of what I was working with....

They sent me the wrong sprocket so I ended up Boring this one out.

I ended up having to cut some relief out of my fender so the chain would clear it.

The mooneyes oil tank I bought ended up being pretty big so I tried to mock up something but without hacking up the tank pretty bad I decided against it.

Not really sure if I want to run a sissy bar or go without so I messed around with this idea just to get a look

I ended up making this velocity stack out of a piece of bronze we had laying around the shop. Really happy on how this turned out.

http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/ab146/tak710/kyles%20pics%20139_zps86lau3i4.jpg (http://s858.photobucket.com/user/tak710/media/kyles%20pics%20139_zps86lau3i4.jpg.html)

After all this work I had put in I ended up cutting out the cross tube that my seat rests on to widen the axel plates for more chain clearance. Also the Slots in the axel plates for the rear wheel were not coinciding with the front tire. I may have got a bunk hardtail from ledsled so after a long time I think I finally got it all sorted out by grinding the axel plates level and filling in the gaps with weld. I made a completely new cross member but this is the only pic I have with the nut welded in until I made the new support. This was probably the biggest hiccup of my whole build.

Dammit man that's killer ! I really want a rigid frame after seeing this.

Damn that's sweet

04-30-2015, 9:44 PM
Lookin slick.

04-30-2015, 11:55 PM
I doubt you got a warped hardtail. the heat from welding is probably what got it out of wack, welding on a the back bone will make the neck move all over the place, i have watched them move while being welded on. it is also very common for frames to spring after being cut.
