I've been chopping my XS650 for a few years now and have been eyeballing other bikes for the past year. I said to myself that if the right bike comes by I'll pick it up.

Last weekend the right bike came by. I picked up this 1970 Sportster from a guy in Sacramento, CA who purchased it from 24Cycle in San Diego.

Here is a photo of the bike at BF4:
<img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-DddoJzA3DnE/UoFDejR6V_I/AAAAAAAADt4/pP2dU77csEE/w1323-h879-no/at-bf4.jpg" width=640>

Then later it was hardtailed:
<img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-8UzvbZ4J0R0/UoFEUmyeCoI/AAAAAAAADuI/lEGPU08Oj3U/w624-h832-no/hardtailed.jpg" width=640>

Then the previous owner sold it to me:
<img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-vZGJdmzqKhY/UoFDdhNBUaI/AAAAAAAADtw/g5-IwdalDKA/w1172-h879-no/for-sale.jpg" width=640>

It wasn't really running at the time, but when I got it home I figured out the problem and it started on the third kick.

I was happy with that, so I started to tear into it. I'm going to put this springer I found a while back on it and I have another tank I'm going to ax and put on. With luck I'll have this on the road by spring.

<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PsDiBHZspAQ/UoFDJSv5lxI/AAAAAAAADtE/vYOoFIJF_XQ/w1518-h854-no/CAM00040.jpg" width=640>

This is my build thread. I'll update it and ask questions here when I run into issues. I have a pretty good idea what I need to do with help from Nick at Ace Cycles in Sparks. Mostly I'm going to copy a bunch of stuff I did on my XS. Primo pedals, crazy apes, ...

I'm currently trying to decide if I should convert my bearing cups to 1" or not.

I noticed that my springer fits a much longer neck than I have and the Old-STF conversion kit compensates for it. I think it's a good idea. I need to decide because I'm getting ready to buy a new stem for my springer.

Congrats on the new ironhead! Not to hijack, I think this still pertinent: 24, could you talk some about what was done to the motor? I have a '71 'CH that I have decided to rebuild on my own, and I am interested what you did/ was done to this motor... Thanks!

70 and 71 are 2 totally different motors. Everything was rebuilt or new. It was all oem hd or simple early performance pieces. Each motor needs it's own massage. Each rebuild is never the same.
This bike was my shop bike and my baby.
The motor rebuild was 4500 alone. I hope you enjoy and respect this scooter for years to come. This is a bike I wish I never allowed to be sold or modified from when I owned it. She now gets to live on. I hope you appreciate the work I put into her and love her as much as I do.

No new news on this build. I'm still waiting for parts to get in. Should be pretty soon I hope.

List of items to do:
* Get springer to Trumpnut to have new stem put in
* Replace all hardware on Springer and fix axle threads
* Chop new tank
* Fix oil leaks (Drain plug and between cases in front)
* Build new handlebars
* Build new seat
* New Regulator on generator (clean up)
* New headlight (maybe)
* Clean up wiring
* Adjust carb (or replace)
* Adjust clutch
* Test ride for a year
* Paint

Three weeks and still waiting for parts.... Waiting on other people just drives me up a wall. LOL

I started to work on cutting up my tank on Sunday but it was so cold out in the garage I didn't get a lot done. I don't think it broke 20 out there all day. -5 at night.

That fucking shitty, where did you get it....dont use that without repair.

Got the stem and neck cups today. The bottom of the stem was already half cut off, but it looks like after mocking it up I can still use it. I can finish cutting the bottom off and then weld it into my bottom tree. I still have about an inch of threads on top for the nut. I think it will be fine.

I'll let Nick be the judge of my idea. lol.

Springer is with Trumpnut now getting referbed. Now I need to get my tank finished.

I'm going to hammer the sides in to dish it. It will look pretty good. Got some tips from Nick on how to do it and I think I will have that done next weekend. Then I'll cut the tunnel out to frisco it. Not a lot, just a mild tunnel job. As it is right now it hits the engine so I have to re-tunnel it.

I have all the stuff to start my tank now. I just need to get out there and start it. LOL. Probably within the next month or so. I'm waiting for my springer to get refurbed by Trumpnut and 24Cycle's still owes me a rear wheel with disc brake setup. I think once I start getting parts in I'll be more motivated to do things on this bike. Can't really do a whole lot with no front end. I don't really want to fab anything until I have everything here. I hate doing things twice.

If it wasn't for waiting on other people I could probably build bikes in a month. I think this year I'm going to start investing in more tools so I can do things myself. But there is still buying things and having to wait. (3 months later...still waiting)

I need to build a new front wheel, make handlebars, finish tank, make a seat, maybe redo fender depending on how the 500x16 tire looks under it, kickstand, pegs, and clean everything up.

Hope to be able to ride it to Born Free 6. I will need at least two months of riding before I feel comfortable to ride it a thousand miles. Shake down test. I could put 1000 miles on it in two weeks just riding to work and back each day.

Can't wait to get this bad boy on the road! It looks so cool in the mock ups.

Got my bike back from Trumpnut with the rebuilt springer. This bike is going to be super nice.

Got the tank dished today. I filled it up with sand then started with my air hammer. The air hammer didn't really do anything so I used the teardrop hammer on it. Then smoothed it out with the air hammer.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-loyruoEBSpU/U1MmzxjxDAI/AAAAAAAAFn8/YdqH7euzzjw/w750-h422-no/20140419_145039.jpg

I think it turned out quite nice.

Next I'll cut off that stupid fake cap thing and cut the tunnel out. I'm going to go with a super shallow tunnel so it doesn't hit the engine.

A buddy of mine lent me a 1" bender die for my Pro-Tools and I was able to bend up some bars. I figured that a T-bar style would fit this bike the best. I had originally wanted to build some bendy apes like my other bike. But they just didn't work with the lines. Here the photo:

phail, its looking nice. i couldn't stop looking at the frame neck, it just kept pulling my beady little eyes back to it. have you thought of adding any gussets or something for strength. its problee fine but it makes me nervus looking at it.lol

Phail
05-12-2014, 10:46 AM
Yeah, it looks pretty flimsy but it's been that way for a very long time. Last registration on the bike was in like 1985. I personally don't like the frame that much. But it would be easy to swap it since I have the registration on the engine and not the frame (no vin on the frame, had it inspected twice and it was no problem).

I think a Big Twin neck would be better anyway.

Finally finished my front wheel. Had to rebuild it four time to get the spokes right. I guess the first two wheels I built were just beginner's luck.

One time I was off by one on the rim and two times I was off by one on the hub. LOL

I took an inch out of the center to narrow it just a bit. Grinded the extra fake cap bung off. Now it's tacked back together. I started to weld it up but stopped before I made a mess of it. It needs to be tig welded or at least something better than my 110v Mig. LOL I'm going to check with a few welders and see if they can get it done this next week. If not I'll just do it myself. It won't be nice but it will be done in time.

Here is what it looks like on the bike now.

Ouch, oh f()cking ouch! Do you blame the brass pedal? I have been eyeing them but have been hesitant because of the traction issue. I have the rubber (popsicle)? It works, but it ain't very pretty. Hope you heal soon! Bike is looking GREAT!

I don't blame the pedal. I was being a dumb ass. I was kicking with my left because my right was getting tired. I tore my right last year kicking my other bike. So I was giving it a break. And actually I wasn't even kicking it at the time. I was standing on it and bend over the adjust the carb and slipped off. It was just dumb.

Just be careful especially with these old Sportsters. I've had the gears slip quite a few times in the short time I've owned it where if I wasn't paying attention I could have ripped my knee again.

My tank is off to be welded back up. I really need to get gas for my little welder. Two people have said that I could probably do it just fine if I had gas. Anyway, it should be ready in a few days.

Next order of business is getting this bike to run. I have three carbs. A Zenith, a Mikuni, and a SU. The SU works great but there is way to much fuel going in. The Mikuni has this weird home made accelerator pump that doesn't clear my magneto. I can't find any parts for it or even find this particular model at all. I put up a WTB ad in the classified. The last is the Zenith that came on the bike.

When I first tried to use the Zenith there was gas puking out the overflow. So I purchased a rebuilt kit. I put it all together and same thing. Went back to the Internet and found the correct way to set it up. Set it up again and then I could not get any gas at all. One more time on the Internet and found that the clip should go under the tab. One more time and it seemed to work. It filled the bowl and stopped. So I started kicking it. Got it running for a min. Now the fuel goes in and doesn't stop. I guess it's pouring into the cylinders because it's not coming out of the overflow. Strange.

But I did get the bike started a few times. I don't have a tank on it and I'm just using a long hose as a tank. Once I have this figured out then it's time to wire stuff and get that seat done.

I used the old needle valve and that fixed me right up. Still seems like it's getting too much fuel though. Maybe the jets are not stock. But it's holding fuel, so that's good.

So I was trying to get it running right today and noticed that the front exhaust pipe was ready to fall off. So I went to tighten the bolt and it would not turn. Uhg.. It's like stripped out and fused in. Spent an hour fixing that and the other one because they were both like that. Drilled them out and just put a bolt through them. The clamp to hold the bottom of the pipes was just cross-threaded wrong size nut on the cross member bolt. Gesh Adam... You're suppose to be a pro.

Then I went to kick it again and the clutch cover went all loose. The bolt is rounded off on it too. So I start looking at it closer and the bracket is busted off the case. I have no idea how to fix this.

I'm so close but so far from finishing. I'm not going to have time for the shake down to take it to Born Free (1000 mile round trip).

I lost the little clutch cable pin in my garage somewhere. Not sure how that happened. I'm still waiting for my new rear wheel to get there. And I need to seal the tank because my welding isn't that great. (I need gas)

I can probably finish it but I need to ride it for about 500 miles to shake it down and see what falls off. Don't want to be working on my bike on the way to LA.

Well, here are some photos for you guys to enjoy anyway.

Now I need to figure out what HD CV carb I have so I can get some jets for it. I've turned the screw out like three turns just to get it to start well and it has a huge flat spot just off idle. So I need to go bigger on the pilot jet for sure.

It also has some pretty bad air leaks between the flange because it's warped. I have to stop buying junk online and just buy new stuff. Always wasting my money.
