I've got an xs650 that needs the electrical set up and some other minor odds and ends. Adding some parts to my sporty and still debating whether I should get a 70's style cb750 a guy is selling near me that I'd like to hard tail (actually I'd love to throw it in an amen savior frame) and change a few things on.

Although any of that could change at any time haha.

If I get some free time around school this winter we should meet up to work on your stuff! There are a lot of bike shows here during the summer. We have blue cat motors third Thursdays which are all about vintage bikes. First Thursdays are at dulano's pizza in uptown. We have the bearded lady bike show. There are many runs occurring as well.

I rode over and drank some cheap beers and ate some great free food and hung out with a shovel bud. Y'all missed out ! I guess they had some non motorsports leather-ball type event on TV so they laid out the free buffet. Gimme a heads up when y'all wanna try again.

Where do you work on bikes in Maple Grove!? That's a pretty fuckin posh town for a 'biker'... I live just off of 169 & 63rd (ha!) occasionally see a nice sporty when I pick up my daughter from daycare along Hemlock. Maybe that's you or your friends? Maybe not - I don't recognize the bikes from any local shows.

I'd like to know more about your UP trips - I've virtually planned many routes up there but I never took off... Maybe the motivation I need is a group trip.

Gotta get together with CC'ers from the NW Metro... It's a shot in the dark but far enough out where people can plan around it - y'all want to meet up Friday, Jan 17th @ Dick's Bar in Osseo (or someone's heated garage...)?

I recognize those clean bikes! Parked near em @ the Bearded Lady show this year. Stuck around for their awards & quickly left; ate the fish @ Mayslacks & WOW my stomach flipped its shit - then I was pale & clean shavin for this less than bitchin photo:

We need to talk about a trip up north on the 17th - because I've virtually planned this trip about a million times....

Meet up in St. Croix Falls
Head to Superior, WI via WI35
Onto Silver Bay via old 61
Up to Ely on - I think - CR 1
Maybe venture over to Thief River Falls
...or straight to Bemidji
Detroit Lakes
Brainerd
& Mille Lacs to home via 47

~800 miles. I've been on half of these roads by truck - and they were pretty good. Whatever route we take - I need to plan to the fuckin 10's because my gas tank runs dry @ ~ 60 mi's. Back to work - done daydreaming.

Anyway, I'm in the same boat, new to town and new to CC(I've had an account for a bit but haven't used it.) I've only been riding a few years and been working on my sporty when I have time and money. Mostly just cutting shit off and some bolt on stuff. I'd like to get in with some dudes around town and wrench and learn more.
Also looking for a place i might be able to pay to store and work on the bike during the winter. Wondering if there are any shop collectives around town or something similar.

I might try to make it out to Dick's on the 17th, if its an open invite.

Would any of you guys want to make a couple extra $$$ and weld a leak in a tank?

I could maybe do. Charge would be nominal at most (transportation and beer costs). What's the cause of the leak? Does it need a plate patched in from an impact, or just a stitch weld on a popped seam? Is it somewhere that will show and needs cosmetic appeal? Dirty and easy, I could do today. Pretty or tricky may need to wait until I grab some new gear.
(BTW, if its a small leak, have you tried just patching with something like PC7 epoxy putty? Done that a couple times for small holes on undersides, never failed me.)

Its leaking from a seam. The guy who build the tank way under estimated the time it was going to take to complete the project, so in order to meet his quote, the welds are super dirty and structurally the rear tank mount probably isn't the greatest. I'm almost tempted to see if that back mount can be re worked. I wasn't aware of that PC7 stuff, I'll give that a try and see how it goes. Have any of you guys used red-kote? Does it work well?

CR1 from Silver Bay to Ely is a great road I hear. Also heard CR 38 between International Falls & Grand Rapids is the best road in MN - even though it's a bit rough. More options for the up north moose knuckle trip.

Naw, not right now anyway. I'm pretty happy with it as a swingarm right now. I think I've decided if I want to go rigid I'll just buy a aftermarket frame to swap my gear into. Don't want to cut my frame and not sure about bolt-ons .....one thing I really like about these older HD's is the ability for the bike to be almost like a motorcycle Lego set as long as you don't hack off too many tabs, etc and to be able to swap it around into different personalities fairly easily....surely there is a point where not going all the way can be kinda non-committal and half ass, but I personally believe there can be a balance found. Here it is As it sits now....constructive critisizm always welcome!

I do my work at the Twin Cities Maker / Hack Factory workshop (in Minneapolis). Its an awesome place - shitloads of equipment (milling machines, full woodshop, mig and tig welders, plasma cutter, etc) and only costs $55 a month (24/7 access). Only downside is you can't really store much stuff there (limited space) and can't do engine work (fire hazard / insurance issue).

I could show people how to use a MIG, but other folks actually runs classes there (which are mandatory to use certain equipment, and range from free to maybe $10 an hour). We have one on TIG coming up, I'll be taking that for sure.

I'm almost always over there on Sundays, either working on my bike (currently building the front end, storing just the frame there, engine at home in my garage) or doing some other project (been going nuts on wood and plexi with the cnc laser cutter). I'm probably gonna start playing with the Bridgeport mill soon, but would be happy to take time to talk welding, and the guy who will be teaching the TIG class is usually there the same time as me.

Location & other info:
http://www.tcmaker.org/blog/hack-factory/
Note that the video on that page is very out of date; they have a lot of new equipment not shown there.

I'd be totally stoked to show people around some Sunday, and instruct / collaborate on any equipment I know how to use (MIG welder, most wood working tools, laser cutter, plasma cutter, metal bandsaw, pipe bender, milling machine, drill press, etc.) They also have open house on Wednesday evening (which I'm never at) if you want to get a tour or join. I think it would ROCK to have a strong contingent of motorcycle builders as members there. Currently there's occasional folks doing motorcycle projects, but not enough that we can get any policies / facility adaptations made to make it easier to do such work. That probably can't happen in the current space constraints, but there has been talk about leasing an additional section of the building we are in.

I'm gonna have to check this out! Do they have CNC Plasma or laser (cutting not etching)?

Sadly no. They do have a bunch of new metal working equipment that needs some repair, setup, and power stations installed for it to be usable. This includes a larger turret lathe to supplement the old Craftman, a second Bridgeport knee mill, and an old "Ironworker" that can punch, shear, and shape plate, angle iron, etc. The hope is that last item can cover many of the tasks a plasma cutter would be used for, and also take a load off the drill press & metal bandsaw and reduce the mess from abrasive cutting / grinding.

A plasma cutter is high on the wish list (am going to the board meeting Tues to find out HOW high) but there's other items (like the new laser cutter) that had been on the list longer. I've been trying to get embedded in a project to build a (small) cnc pc based of an unused 2 axis control arm we have laying about, but I think that has dead ended (again).

We've got a nice new laser cutter, but that 'only' does wood, plastic, cloth, leather (nice for seats and bags!), etc. I just got done using the laser to proto-type dome stuff in MDF, and am sending the files to somebody here on CC for plasma cutting, which is my solution to cnc plasma for now. I actually use that thing WAY more than I expected to, so can see why it was a priority for them to get one.

Here's a picture of the iron worker. Oh, and apparently is has an attachment for (dun dun dun) TUBE NOTCHING!!!

Welcome to Minnesota!! We had a meet during the winter but I think I speak for everyone when I say we should get together on 2 wheels sometime soon! Whether its to ride or just drink beers and grill or both haha.

I'd like to start a communication list of CC members from MN. I'll make a little list of names and phone numbers and I can email it out to everyone... It'd be easier than relying on CC to communicate... Anyone interested, send an email to kevtheisffc@gmail.com include your name, number and whatever else you'd like. Rides, or work space set up i.e. welders, lifts etc. also, if you're willing to help those who need a hand with something let us know. I wouldn't have the bikes I have if I didn't have aweseome buds who help we out when I need something welded or machined!

Check out Gophersandcheese.com there are tons of events in the MN and WI area listed as well as roads to ride and pics from past shows.

If you're interested in having your info on the list, shoot it my way. If you think it's a stupid idea, just ignore it. Nobody wants to hear you complain.

Thanks, Kevin

So to avoid my teeth falling out into my hand, I'm putting her up for sale. It's a 71 xlch, new top end this spring, dyna s ignition, cv carb, nice looking bike but it has scratches and dings in the paint. 2500 obo. I can send pics if you're interested.

Would a full on blacksmiths forge do? (Answer- yes, it will- owner uses it to forge axe heads.) Hack Factory has one, we could meet up there sometime to do it. Would need to kick in some cash for propane (assuming the tank's full and we don't need to run get some). They also have one of those HF rod bending setups, anvil, etc.

Would need to wait until July 13 or later though, shop is closed for cleanup / maintenance on the 12th and is really not worth trying to do much work in right now. I'm planning to take the week of the 13th off, could do any day that week.

fuck yeah that would be sweet. i can kick in for whatever materials we would use. i have the cold rolled and the bungs i have made, i also have a template of what i want. ive got a big ass sheet of metal i am going to use for a metal fab table, i figured i could use that to make a template and bolt bungs to it so we can make it symetrical? seems like the way to do it.

btw it would be awesome to come in as your 48 hr member and get a tour of the joint. if there are enough things to use i would be down to get a membership. what else is required of a member? im an hour north of mpls so i wouldnt be there too often..... i guess id have to get down there and check the place out to see what its all about

Sounds like it would work. I'm no expert at rod bending, but templates / jigs always seems to make things easier.

48 hour membership just requires a sponsoring member, is $10, covers insurance for tool use etc.

Full membership (covers yer whole family) is $55 a month plus $25 for keycard deposit (which you probably want- I went by Sunday and could not get in because I'd lost mine). Joining is easiest (by far) to set up if you attend an open house, which happens every Wednesday night from 6-ish to 10-ish. Is also a great time to get a tour of the place (that's basically the purpose of having them), and to hang out drinking in the shop with a bunch of kilt wearing beardos.

They are a nice bunch of people but i have had them do work in the past and they are great at what they do, but they dont want to do a small project like i have. I am going to look through their suppliers samples and find something that matches my lepera seat perfectly, then have them order me some. I really want someone to do the foam and cover this base i made, so it doesnt look like an amateur did it. Im definately not quite there yet on a lot of shit, but im not gonna make my bike look like shit just so i can say i did something. welding on the tabs and making the backrest base was enough for me LOL. might hit this guy up and see what he says

I am considering pulling my front fender, but making a tubular fork brace with a little "flap" on the back side of the fork to deflect rain water. something descrete that matches my speed hole theme? you into doing small jobs fiddlefoot?

Hi Ya'll,

Moved up here this summer, for work. I'm in Fridley, and have a heated garage if anyone needs to wrench on something this winter.
I've been riding for ~3 years now, and this spring took a ride to Texas, and am planning a ride to Yellowstone for 2016.

Westboundbiker
12-16-2014, 8:47 AM
I made a mock-up last night out of cardboard (that's my style of rapid prototyping!). I'm going to make some drawings in CAD tonight. I'm thinking a small steel box, about 4x8x3, with a support piece for mounting that comes down from one side, along the battery, and with angle pieces to support the box. It'll need a couple 3/4 inch holes for the starter button and keyswitch. I'll post a pic of the prototype tonight before I start modeling.

loddytoddy
12-16-2014, 9:35 AM

Hahaha, sorry, I'm an engineer, and it shows: 3D modeling. If anyone needs that done on anything, I'm pretty good at solid parts, and my wife has been teaching me to do sheet metal models (she's an engineer too).

And I wouldn't mind doing something like that on a rat bike build (I'm thinking doing one of those next), but on this bike I'm trying to go show-bike level, and have a nice clean steel box, and possibly get it chromed or painted.

loddytoddy
12-16-2014, 10:14 AM

Westboundbiker
12-16-2014, 12:06 PM
I was thinking about getting into welding, but I figured I should get my frame welded by a professional, and I found Fidelity welding over in Osseo. Its just a two-man shop, run by Chris and his dad, and they only charge $50 an hour, and are pretty flexible, not to mention they're great welders. I've just been taking my stuff up there since.

Do you have a laser/plasma cutter, or just a sheer? I understand that bending it as it stands is technically impossible, but at least can be made close, cutting and then I can weld it would quite possibly be easier.

FiddleFootJones
12-19-2014, 12:26 AM
Oooh, nice print! That definitely makes things nicer. I have access to a laser, yes. The best way to make this would be doing it in two pieces with the sides and front (?) being one peice, and the tray and back being the other then weld them together. Do you have a dimension for where you want the other two .850 holes?
I've been crazy busy the last few days, but I will drop you a line tomorrow evening.

Westboundbiker
12-19-2014, 8:02 AM
Oh dang, I can't believe I missed those dimensions. I want them 1.25" from the top edge, and in 1.25" from each bend. I'll update the drawing tonight, breaking it down to the two piece design. What format do you need those in for your laser?

I'll write a temporary program off of your drawing, to save from nesting a sheet, so no need to format. One last thing, the half round slot, you want it .850 as well?

Holy crap.... How come I missed this thread here after almost 2 years on here.

Enough of that. Just thought I would say hello from the Saint Francis/Zimmerman, MN area. I usually am found riding all over down by Coon Rapids and junk though.

This is my hooptie... Nothing fancy. Just a 1979 Honda CB750 in an AMEN hardtail frame with an HD front end complete with 21" wheel. Of all the bikes I have built/owned, have to say that this one has to be one of the funnest to go rip out the town on. This is how it looked after last winters makeover.

This is what it looked like for a few years before the mild makeover...

Anyways, when I am kid free (5 year old) and not working, im always down for burning some fuel.

there will be another swap at the armory sometime after christmas. ill post up here when i know more. seems like its always the same dudes selling though, i wish more swappers would come to mix up the product that is there.

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/mcy/4834936381.html Just saw this on CL. Looking at his site, looks like the cafe/restomod guys are pretty heavily represented, I think we should try and get some bobbers and choppers up! Plus, free pro photos of your chop.

I was in this last year.. I was his first subject so I'm at the bottom of the page on his site, my chop is off to the right in it's early stage of rebuilding... Sean is a cool dude.. really easy to work with..

he also had a showing of all the photos at the old Ducati store in uptown.. so it's not just living on the web.. Iron and Air also ran his photos...

Hey, does anyone have a shop space with an exhaust fan system? I need to tune the carbs, and I don't want to piss off my neighbors by continuously running it through the RPM band all day.

I'll be out at Mama Tried. Went last year and it was a fuckin blast; good crowd, but not too crazy. With all the pub I've been seeing for it this year I have a feeling it could get crowded.

And howdy everyone. Name is Jordan and I live in Brooklyn Park. Have a little pseudo heated shop with some tools, welders, torches, etc. When I'm not busy I am always down to help people out and drink beers.

Going out bike shopping this weekend, got a bonus. Probably not looking at anything people here would like though; lead candidate at the moment is a '85 FJ1100. 125hp of air cooled goodness would put a smile on my face. I'm a child of the 80's though.

May 3 2015 - Saint Paul MN to Madison WI and back (Slimey Crud Run run)

Departing Saint Paul MN with the goal of making it to Pine Bluff, Wisconson for the SCR by 10:30 AM. Google Maps marks it as a 4h ride, I figure leaving at 6:30AM is a safe bet. SCR rides generally NW from Pine Bluff to Leeland WI, so the trip back to St. Paul would be under 4 hours, will be home well before dark. Should be a nice full day of riding and gawking at bikes. If anybody who wants to join has route suggestions besides super-slabbing to Madison, I'm game, but otherwise I'll be burning fast miles on I94 to get there.

Was there most of the day today and I now have a really bad case of sun burn! Couldnt have asked for a better day. Would have stayed into the night but had to get home to a 5 1/2 year old.

Oh yeah, I took off for about an hour and thats when the cops showed up and parked across the street and Andy walked over to confront him. Wonder what went down there. Might have to ask him. :) Was a great time though.

hay all,
last nite I was at mayslacks talking to the owner of NE Tattoo, and he just opened up an Moto Collective is what I think he called it. basically a warehouse where you can rent out space to do projects or whatever. says hes got a powdercoater, welders all the tools and equipment to go along with it, some workshops on different shit, sounds really cool... I guess he opened it in Nov. but the Grand Opening is 6/27. they're throwin a big party FREE BEER, taco truck.... best part for me is its less then a mile from my house... address is 211 St. Anthony Pkwy, Minneapolis...

I was there after the ton up show the other week. Oz is pretty cool dude. builds cafe racers (the whole shop does pretty much) smoked some pot and ogled his ladyfriend ;)
the shop space is clean well lit and well stocked. I think there are two or three spaces left. total of 13 dudes right now.
I actually used to work in that building at the electric motor repair..
