yo i finally sold my xs650. had it for 3 years. we had our ups and downs. it was a great scoot but it was time to move on. some dude from san diego came up and bought it. 3 days after, i find a 1987 sportster 1100 XLH for cheap. it was running, registered and titled. a lot of chrome aftermarket parts. i had to change it a lot to make it myself.

i thought it would be cool to show the progress of my bike. its nothing crazy. i have always loved swing arm "choppers". so enjoy.

Heres my XS650.

put on my first ride. rode to my friends JD and cindys to show them my new bike. half way there i had no acceleration. CARB PROBLEMS. it would start but the second i give it any gas, it would die. i kinda fixed it and made it to my friends house finally.

i got home. i found out the problem. the tank sealer! it all came off and it was free floating in the tank and all the walls of the tank was rust. i tried to take the sealer out. i failed. so i guess i gotta get a new tank. SCORE cuz that tank was ugly. you can see the sealer in the first picture. i started taking it off and oh man. worst wiring job ever! give the PO an award!

Don't throw that tank away. Get a quart of MEK (methyl ethyl ketone), plug the petcock bung, and pour it in. Shake it around , let it sit a few hours, shake it some more, and pour it out. It'll dissolve the lining, making the tank useable again.

Now sell the tank.

so it had a weird bullet looking headlight on it. i wasnt into it at all. i got a stock sporty headlight from my buddy and i wanted to put the OFF/RUN and push START button on the visor of the head light. im pretty stoked on how it came out.

so the bullet headlight wasnt even bolted to the bottom tree. it had 2 L brackets, a huge washer and a bolt. and the chrome bottom tree cover was supporting it. haha freaking rigged up.

i was going to just put some acetone in the tank. but ill look into that.
im for sure going to sell that tank. that tank would be perfect for a sporty with a fairing and 15" T bars the club look.

welcome to the world of harley, the motor company spent hundreds of dollars on developing the sportster, you can see harleys fine work. now you are going to make it better. if you do half the job on your sporty that you did to the yamaha you will have a sweet ride. it is the best bar hopper ever made. have fun

NEXT PROBLEM! one of my spark plugs blew out and took all the threads with it. went to afew shops and machine shops. they wanted $100-300 to repair it. all of them said i had to take the head off also. screw that. i went to the auto part store and ordered a heil coil kit. it took me 15 mins to do. the kit was $50. http://i1261.photobucket.com/albums/ii594/beaverbeavs/IMG_0287_zps5379d3e7.jpg

I'm more curious to hear how you plan to make sure that there are no shavings that made their way down into the mill while cutting threads? Did I miss something?

Now, in the interest of saving money you've potentially increased how much it's going to cost to fix all this. You should've had the shop do it. $100-$300 was a good deal.

i did alot of research. i called alot of machine shops and people that build motors. got alot of advice about this. 75% of the people said it would be fine to do it without taking the head off.
i know you can be an internet outlaw and tell me whats right and wrong but i did my reseach.

Was just asking. No need to get internet butt hurt.

I know timesert makes kits that are designed for use with the head mounted, but heli-coil (not heil coil) kits inherently create a lot of shavings.

Sure you might be fine, but it seems like more risk than it's worth when it's not that hard to pull the head and then coil it just in case.

Don't get so butt hurt dude....if you aren't interested in discussions about your projects then you shouldn't post things like that. ;)

Hey you asked bud. Hahahaha! I just know that I wouldn't have done it that way. Metal in the bore of a motor is never a good idea. I doubt machine shops would've recommended that practice. Unless of course they're expecting you to bring it back to them so they can do it right the second time. Cool it man. Don't go asking questions in a public forum if the moment you hear something you don't want to hear upsets you. What the f*ck is an "Internet Outlaw" anyway?! This is exactly the reason why I tend to avoid chopcult. Ugggghhh...relax. Good luck with your bike.

1. Klean Strip is what I always used on paint that had to go. You spray it on and the paint literally jumps off the steel or alloy.

2. 99% of people have you and your bike's best interest in mind. Don't get so touchy when they offer advice, it's literally what built this place and why it thrives.

as far as the tapping plug hole, just use axle grease and do it slowly and carefully and the shavings will stick to grease(mostly). and you can vacuum stuff out if you need. if your confident you did a good job trust yourself. great job. and if it fucks up that gives you a reason to do a nice top end wich is fun and easy on harleys
