Same as all the other forums, but if you haven't seen if before, long story short: build>blowup>start rebuid, get involved in the horse aco, loose track of the project, life.... etc.

Waiting on my (good) cyl. to get back from the machine shop, gotta fab up some mids and a brake rod still. Got some new 'Midgets' bars from Front St.

Most current pics, today at lunch.

thanks guys!

Been hammering away on this thing so its absolutely ready for the road if i EVER get my cylinders back.

*Got a new kickstand made, and miraculously found my old block, got it all welded up and back on, works great.

* Got the seat mounted, scored some Ford valve springs from a greybeard up the road. Made the pivot, etc.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/image1art/082609004.jpg

* Started on my 'new mids' I made forwards for the bike when i first built it, they looked like hell, i cut them off. Soo... i machined a piece of round stock to accept a worn cam bushing, and welded that to my motor mount, and then machined a shaft to fit the bush. I used an old Ironhead brake lever, which is about the right length, and havent decided if i will utilize the ears on the Harley part, or make an 'ear' on the back side of the shaft like a stock triumph. Bent up some round bar to make the foot peg as well, its about an inch and a half longer than stock, and super comfy! Obviously a bunch of cleanup and finish to do yet, but i'm pretty happy so far.

seems i haven't updated this in a bit.

Was going to sell this bike when i got it done, decided i was gonna keep it, but also decided that if i was gonna keep it, i wanted to change it ALL. Sold the tank, fender and headlight to help finance some more motor parts. Been working on making a bunch of new pieces for it.

I have decided to ditch my current fork setup, in favor of a narrowglide, for a few reasons:

1. to have a brake stay tab/elminate ugly exhaust clamp brake stay
2. real bearings, i have a set of yammy forks on their now, and couldn't source a bearing to make the set up work, so i had a machinist buddy make a specialized bushing which he says will hold up, but the idea of a real bearing makes me happy.
3. cleanliness is godliness.

so...

Started to clean up one of the motor mounts. Just about ready to polish. These will prolly get chrome at some point down the road, but just polish and some clear for now, not bad for steel though.

could you post up a couple pics of how you're attaching your mids to the frame?

i'm actually working on a completely new frame, but i'll make sure and post pics when i get there. Bascially there will be 2 threaded bungs welded into the frame rails, flush mounted, then the bracket bolts to it, if that makes sense.

can you dig it?

Started hacking up the Magneto last night. here are a few pics of the stock mag body.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/image1art/IMG_0461.jpg
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/image1art/IMG_0462.jpg

At this point i have already removed the drive gear and impulse unit. I then cut off the slotted mounting tab, as well as all of the body material that housed the drive gear. I probably could have used this one as is/was, but wanted to get the mag tucked in as close as possible, so it met the grinder. I will be chucking it up in the mill tomorrow to get the mating surface perfectly flat. I will be re-welding the mounting tab to the body as shown in the pics. As it sits now, its about 1/4" taller than a Hunt mag would be.

yeah, its been patiently waiting its turn.

mag is from an early wisconsin twin i believe, all of the XH mags are pretty similar other than the mounting.

I was curious I had someone show me a mag off a 2 cylinder cement mixer and was saying it is basically the same thing without the mounting part being the same...Makes sense I guess ...Looking for a way to get a mag on the 70 without shelling out $900 ....But will probably bite the bullet and do it anyways cause I want a key switch mounted in it ....so on so on...

Looking for a way to get a mag on the 70 without shelling out $900 ...

that's exactly why i'm going the route i'm going.

If you know your narrowglides you know whats going on here, if not, i shaved the 'accessory mounts & welded the bolt holes shut, and then shaved all the casting marks, knocked off the fork stops. Its looking better, little more cleaning and some gloss black will do the trick.

Picked up the beltdrive last night and gave it a quick clean up. Its the MAP version w/ alloy basket and sealed bearing as well as alloy pressure plate and ball bearing clutch rod, belt is in good shape, bearing is good, and i also got a primary cover out of the deal. Primary cover had a big hole cut in it so you could see the pressure plate spin, but i decided i wanted to see a bit more... and the brass nuts that i got from Trumpnut really tie it all together. I'm stoked on this, major score for $200

Did you alter any of the frame dimensions? like up 2 out 2 or anything ???? either way looks killer nice work....

image1

it is the same dimensions as my old frame that had been chopped in the 70's, which i'm thinking was about 2up2out w/34 deg of rake.

Picked up a ragged set of Fork Covers at the swap over the weekend for $10, not sure if they are homemade or what. Gonna have to enlarge the top section a bit to get them to cooperate with the Narrowglide(i'm lacking about 1mm clearance).

STILL waiting on my crank and cylinder to get back from the machine shop....getting frustrated, i'm ready to ride!

Fender is mounted, sissy is mounted, got my bars from Craig, and got the controls fitted. Went and picked up my crank and cyl. barrel from the machine shop (they had them since June and hadn't touched them yet...) and took 'em to another place (that just did valves and seats on my head) so i hope to have all that back in a couple weeks so i can actually get this fucker on the road.

nice bike. I can't deal with mids though. Mine has to have the forward controls. At least the brake side. I like a hand shift.

image1
05-10-2010, 11:37 AM
Got to work on my 'new' mids this weekend, pretty much a direct copy of what i already made, just some little tweaks. Started with some nice 90deg bends that craig did up for me, and then made pieces in the lathe for the mounting bits. Triumph con rod bushing, inserted in some DOM for the pivot, and a clevis i had hangin around. Nice and tight, feel good, look good, simple.

Timing/shift side. Will be using a stock shift arm.

Got the sludge trap cleaned out, new rod bearings on, con rods on, cams in, case halves back together, timing gears and oil pump on, timing cover locked down, transmission is in, and indexed (got all 5 gears) and the belt drive is all on, just got to put in the clutch pushrod. Camera was dead, i'll try to get some pics later today. Everything seems to be going well so far.

great look on the fork covers!, good thinking on the mag mount, get all the bugs worked out and market that set up.
but that right angle intake maniflod is gonna have some big time responce lag, we tried those maniflods with big Mikuni's to clear the down tube and it ended up on the dyno with less power than a stock set up Amal.
Plus I hate Mikuni's, yes better top speed, but everything else sucks. Do your own test...get a Amal all set up go on the bike, for a ride with that carb and then do a quick switch with the Amal and you will see the difference.
the bike looks killer, good job.

image1
04-08-2011, 11:31 AM
thanks torch, i'm sure you are prolly right about the carb setup. I haven't got the carb dialed in just yet, and have been thinking lately about going to a single Amal, conventionally mounted, because i love Amals, but this carb was with the bike when i got it, and i'm kinda attached to it sentimentally. Its prolly gonna stay for the time being, but a good chance i'll switch next season, we'll see how it goes.

Pulled it off the road a couple weeks ago to get ready for the Timonium Bike Show in MD Feb 10-12. Stripped to the bare frame and decided to make a couple small changes before i started painting and plating everything.

new lower fender mounting. These are all counter-sink bungs for socket head cap screws, just didn't have any laying around at the minute.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/image1art/201111201004.jpg

new top oil tank mount.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/image1art/201111201006.jpg

here you can see all of the new mounts, including the middle fender mount.

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/image1art/201111201008.jpg

Started on a new sissy bar last night. Its 5/8 rather than 1/2 like the old one, and its about 3 inches taller. Not sure about it yet, think its a little too big/bulky. Prolly go back to 1/2" and only go 1.5 inches taller than the old one.

Did you ever try swapping the carb out like torch was talking about? Any issues with that manifold?

nope, still running the same setup. I'm sure a single Amal on the stock manifold would be worth a tiny bit of power, but this is a chopper not a race bike.... It starts very easily, runs great, pulls hard, real good throttle response, no 'flat spots', no reason to change in my mind.
