Hey all,
Quick question about rattlecan paintjobs. For those who have done rattlecan paintjobs; how many coats of clear did you put on your fender/tank/etc.? Is it possible to get a high gloss shine with clear coat or should I just find someone with a spray guy to paint my stuff?
Thanks.

you can get a good shine on there with rattlecan clear. you've just got to do a bit of wet sanding and then polish it. it holds up to gas decent, but not better than what you can spray with a gun.

these are both rattlecan jobs i've done...and shiney...

nope! duplicolor metalcast is what i used for all of it except that pale mint green on the first one. it is household spray paint (can't remember the brand) from home depot.

I can attest to IronHollie's rattle can job. I saw her working on it at the Bastard Bash in Hico Tx. last fall!

spraymax makes an awesome 2k clear in rattlecan. it's about 18$ a can, but it's the real deal. (urethane)

When painting with spray paint do you sand between colors and sand the clear? If so what grit do you use, also do you wet sand?

sanding between coats is to get rid of texture, which is gonna make the paint have that deep "glass" looking finish. wetsanding is nice because the paint doesnt build on the paper and you dont cut through as fast as you would dry. stuff ive painted i used 800 grit paper between coats to knock down texture then on clear 1500 followed by 2000 then buff it back to shine. you can get rattle can paint to shine, its all in the sanding and polish. just dont spill gas on it....

I have used applance epoxy which works very well. Just limited in colors. Now my tins are covered with bedliner in a can from auto parts store. 2 - 3 cans at $9.00 each will do it. after done and cured about 24 hours, Lightly rub it out with a scotch bite pad. It always looks good with armerall or tire dress.

use the 2 part clear spray cans. it is urethane, has a 12 hour life and is totally chem resistant... costs about $20 and is worth ten times that if you put ANY effort into your paintjob

I use Duplicolor engine paints for my bike. Prep is essential to a good paint job. And gas wont fuck it up, I just buff the gas stain right off....

max2k stuff is great. i spilled some gas on my tank last weekand it didnt even dull the finish like the duplicolor clear stuff.
the depth and shine isnt even comparable either. i have about 6 or 7 coats of duplicolor clear on my lil fairing and just 2 or 3 coats of the max2k on the tank. tank looks 100 times better.

My buddy used the Duplicolor Clear Rattle on this on, looks good and shiney, but it hasn't quite set up to be gas proof.

Rattle can is the way to go for me. you can redo paint whenever you want easy, and its fun and cheap.
