I bought this turd for $150 bones from some shitbird that had it listed for $1,000 on CL. My brother (A mechanic at the local Honda shop) and I brought some stuff over to this assclowns house to decide if it was worth $1,000. I asked this guy a handful of normal questions you'd ask somebody and he had no clue what the fuck was going on. So we tear into this pile of shit in his yard to see what we're working with. We spend a little time telling this guy that he's crazy and its not worth shit. I told him I'd do some research and get back to him. I called him back an hour later, told him the deal and offered up $150 cold hard singles I had pulled down from the night before at work. He was hesitant at first until I suggested he take his ugly bitch out to dinner as well as get this junk out of his yard. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee159/RedRabbitz/IMAG3798.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/RedRabbitz/media/IMAG3798.jpg.html)
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee159/RedRabbitz/IMAG3810.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/RedRabbitz/media/IMAG3810.jpg.html)

Next thing you know, I'm trailering this steaming pile to my brothers place. We get it home and it sits for the night.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee159/RedRabbitz/IMAG3811.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/RedRabbitz/media/IMAG3811.jpg.html)

The next day, I get a text from my brother, "I'm gonna pull your valve cover off and look inside." About an hour goes by and I get another text, "Hey, your motor is out." he's the type of guy that likes to take everything apart.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee159/RedRabbitz/IMAG3943.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/RedRabbitz/media/IMAG3943.jpg.html)

I had to look at it with just the tank on for a second and think to myself, "Fuck it would be so easy to just build some fucking cafe piece." Fuck that, I want a hardtail.

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee159/RedRabbitz/IMAG3945.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/RedRabbitz/media/IMAG3945.jpg.html)

So he gets up in her guts and is suggest changing the gaskets. I was game for that. Next thing he says is, "we got it apart, lets put new pistons in it." Ok, if you say so boss.

I need to get a hold of some axle plates. Any suggestions or just go the ebay route? I was also thinking of picking up a different triple clamp because the stock old one just looks scary. I'd like to run a 21 but I don't think that's gonna happen with the stock neck after it's lowered.

Check out CycleOne. They can getchya the plates, or a complete hardtail for your Honda chassis (and there hardtails are amongst the best, if not the best out there.

And talk to Kate (CycleOne) about your triple clamps. She is one of the best at finding what there customers are lookin for. Tell her exactly what your plans are, and watch the magic......

Good luck with your build.

Note to self: carry Vaseline when you're around. Sell all that fairing/touring shit off of there on ebay and you just financed your whole build.

++ for Ebaying fairing shit. Don't forget to save the wiring harness and the mounting bracket for resale.

The fenders, plastic side covers, airbox, headlight with mounting ears, etc are all sellable and most are already off the bike.

That Honda will buy you and you bro a steak dinner too.

Gotta love it when salesmanship pays off.:cheersmate:

Just gonna build a hardtail. I had looked at theirs and seriously thought about it but I think building one is gonna be a little more cost effective. I did some looking on egay and it seems like the triple clamps can be had for around $100. I'm thinking I should just make that myself as well unless anyone has a line on a used one.

CycleOne or many other places out there can score ya the axle plates too. I recall seeing a company selling axle plates by themselves, I just cant recall who.

On the triple trees, as long as you got the ability to get everything lined up perfectly square, go for it. Ya just wanna make sure it's all straight and true, cause that would suck to have the steering binding up when your trying to turn. But I'm sure you knew that.

Pulled the motor out and braced up the frame today. Guess its ready to cut up. Gotta find someone with a 1 1/8" and a 1 1/4" die to bend some tubing for me locally. Hopefully I'll be able to score a 16" wheel for the rear too. I picked up a 21" for the front from a friend but I'm not sure I'll be able to get it as low as I want and still clear the pipes with the stock rake. Anyone have any thoughts on that? Also, this is the first frame I've chopped and hardtailed so it should be interesting. So, just waiting on parts now.

Finally got a chance to get this thing up and get to messing with it again. I have no idea what I'm doing so I think today was a fairly productive day. Frame up, frame off and part of new frame on.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee159/RedRabbitz/CB750/IMAG5180.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/RedRabbitz/media/CB750/IMAG5180.jpg.html)
I couldn't find any local business or shop that had 1.25" dies for tube bending so I decided to go the sand bending route. Filled the tube with sand, tapped it on the ground for a while. Put more sand in, did the same thing. Took a piece of scrap and hammered it in further. Added some sand and then capped it with some tape. Put it in the 1.5" bender and went to town. It actually came out pretty nice and it saved me from paying some clown a stack of money for absolutely nothing.

Taped the tube up so I could see if it was what I wanted. Looked ok so we moved onto some other shit.

A few hours later we had the chainstays slotted to mock up the axle plates and I taped up a seat stay to see if it looked anything like what I wanted. So far I think it's going alright. Seems like we got a lot done for one day on the stock frame and having no idea wtf I'm doing. Guess I'll see when it's done.

Messed with this piece a little more today. Made a slug for the backbone, made the seat stays and stuck it all together with a tank off an old dirtbike that was already in the garage. It's not the one I plan on running but I put it on just to check it out. Gonna fit the seatstays tomorrow and tack it up to see what it looks like. Been a pretty productive weekend for only having a few hours into it.

Got a chance to mess with the bike again today. King sportster tank from Egay showed up and I got the 450-19 Firestone mounted. I decided I didn't like how the tank was sitting on the backbone so I ended up making some cuts and starting yet another project I've never done, making and installing a tunnel in a tank. It's not fitted or welded in but I got a start on it today. Also cut out the pieces I'll be making my rear motor mounts out of. That's the stock front fender sitting on the back for visual assistance. It feels too flimsy to put a person on so I was wondering where a decent place to get a fender is? I like the 7 Metal West ones but I've only read horrible things about orders taking an eternity to get. I won't be using a standard trailer fender either, because honestly, they look like shit on a round tire. Still deciding on a front tire too. Was thinking a 3.5-19 speedmaster.

Yeah, it will be cut at the lower frame rails for sure. I was more talking about making it a little narrower so it doesn't cover so much of the sidewall. i really just need to decide if I want to find a different fender or run this one first, so I can move forward on some other stuff.

I'm using the king sportster tank mainly for capacity. If I were just wanting to cruise around town, I'd run something else. But, it gets me the capacity I want and doesn't look horrible so I'll run it for now. You can always own more than one tank too!

Got to put in some time on this today. Decided on how I'm gonna make the bars and I made all the parts to mount the fender. Should have the fender done and be starting the seat pan/bars and sissy this week. I might end up building an oil tank for it if I can't find anything that fits. What's a safe capacity for one of these? Also, anyone ever use a large oil filter relocation setup instead of the oil tank?

I got the seat pan studs in, welded and the mounts finished. Now I just need to learn how to upholstery it... Also got the brake pedal assembly located and tacked on. No, the degree of the pivot is not final, I just have it sitting like that to hold the pedal up. I really need to figure out my oil tank situation too.

Went to the local farm equipment shop and picked up a 12" piece of 5" exhaust pipe for my oil tank. Decided to scavenge the stock CB750 tank for bungs and fittings. I have no idea how much chain slap I'm gonna see on this so I'm not sure how far I should clearance it above the chain? Anyone have any info or experience with this? Pics of scavenged tank and clearance issue.

I understand that wear on the oil tank is a common problem. I've heard that some people will use a tensioner on the chain to reduce it, but that's it for suggestions, short of mounting the oil bag vertically (which is probably a better idea).

I'm going to put a pretty healthy notch in it. I haven't seen any with notches so I was curious what a finished one may look like. I'm gonna go mess with it today so I may end up finding out sooner than later. I might run a tensioner on the bottom too. We'll cross that bridge when we get there though.

Today, I started the oil tank. Did the notch for chain clearance and made tabs to hang it. Gotta do the bungs tomorrow and figure out exactly where I want to put it. Still deciding on the width as well. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have it all mounted up and have the bungs in it as well.

Made the bungs for the oil tank and got the tank and tabs tacked in place today. Thing it came out pretty good with the notch. I might slim the tank down a bit but aside from that, I just have a few more pieces to stick to it and it on to the next. I laughed a little when I used a ratchet strap, tape and some scrap metal to hold it in place when getting the tabs right.

Put the stock internals into the tank I made then I started thinking about how I'm gonna need longer lines with the stock fittings. Any idea where I can source those or the parts to make em? Also played pretend.

Could always get a fancy chain tensioner. Monstercraftsman makes some pretty cool ones. Both weld on and bolt on and they work pretty awesome. I had one of the skateboard wheel ones on an old bike I did a while back and it worked out great.

It was $5 for the pipe and I used scraps for the notch and caps. If you're not holding oil you won't even really need to be able to weld for it to work.

Here's the peg mounts I started, they're not cut to length yet. I made em long so I could cut em down to where they'd need to be. They're removable and should be high enough to not need to be folding. Worst case, I can cut the peg back, bung it and run a folding setup. Also, I'm trying to decide on tank placement. I think I'm gonna run it closer to the front.

Some pictures of the new rear tank mounts after cutting the old ones off, the foot peg assemblies cut to length and mounted, the fitting of the end caps on the oil tank prior to welding and some lines for setup on the oil tank. You may notice the gap on the sidewalls of the tires is a little off. The fender was actually a little twisted when I got it in the mail. It'll be taken care of when the sissy bar is on so I ain't scurred. @insipidmt on instagay if you wanna fallow this ish there too. (It's mildly offensive.)

Finished all the new mounts on the tank, made the tunnel, moved the cock all the way back and no bubbles. I should just need to do some body work, paint and seal the tank and it'll be done. Started on a little electrical box that I'm gonna try and hide behind the engine and in front of the battery. The large back plate should be removable and the box itself will be able to drop out the bottom of the bike if I ever need to pull the brake assembly off. There's three bikes being worked on simultaneously in this two car garage. You'll notice this XS has the tank on it that's seen in the earlier pics of my bike.

Didn't do anything big today. Here's a few pics of how the electrical box will be positioned as well as the battery tray I started this afternoon. Neither are finished yet. The electrical box will have a permanently attached top and a removable back plate for accessing the internals. It will also drop out under the bike so the brake pedal assembly can be removed.

It should look alright when done. I'm gonna make a small piece to fill in the open spots. I'm still debating if I want to slim the box a little and run a DOHC reg/rec on the outside of it.

I pushed it through by hand the other day, for the first time since putting the foot pegs on. It just barely makes it and touches at the end. I was planning ahead though when I made the foot pegs removable with the two screws. It's got an electric start and If anything goes wrong and I need to kick it a bunch, I could just pull the peg off. It shouldn't be an issue though.

Fender is just a tad off center hanginging a bit to the right from the rear, if you center it up with a shim and put rear fender struts on it that will straighten it back out and keep it squared.

Yeah, you can tell its a little off in a few pics. It was twisted when it came in the mail, I had it all shimmed and spaced when I made the two mounts on the front of it and pulled em out after I was done. I'll have it all straightened out when I build the sissy bar.

Wow! Reading through this thread brought me back... Hard to believe its been over three years since we picked this hog up(and it still hasn't fired...). I remember trying very hard as a "Honda Tech" to tell this guy about the lemon he had.

The frame is done. If I don't receive any guidance in the near future Ill take creative control and finish it. Because its taking up precious space where my busted ass Miata needs to be torn apart in.

Im the little brother. First ass kicking I ever remember getting was for taking apart a perfectly good lawnmower.

If you can find some 1/4 inch neoprene glue that on over the core pad to smooth everything out. 3M77 spray works nice if you set it wet you can reposition things till you get right. If the shapes not too complex you work a single piece of vinyl over it and not need to sew anything.

this is badass. I think I heard a little separation in the firing, maybe the wind though. these things should sound like a hum. Dont be afraid to set the ignition timing by ear, shit gets worn and in my experience thats the best way. I put hex head screws in the timing plate to make it go faster adjusting it. Make sure the valves are set correctly, time it, and then since you have short pipes, you might try shimming the carbs. I found machine screw washers that fit in the recess in the carb body around the needle that worked perfect, and cheap.

And then, when you get that bitch dialed in, advance your timing ever so slightly. It will amaze your friends how easy they are to kick start. Mine kicks over first kick with only about a 1/4 kick. Pisses them off to no end.
