I've noticed that there's cb/xs/kz but no love for the suzy-q's. I was wondering if there were any owner's out there wanting to show off these beauties.

The 650 is quite nice but suffers from "exposed backbone syndrome" due to the Sportster tank.

That 550 is a very clean build. Love the seat/subframe design. Great detailing! :killerjob:

Here's a GS1150 I built for a friend a couple of years ago. He asked what I could do with the standard bike, when we finished only the gearbox and crank were not replaced or heavily modified. Even the camshafts were made to our specs. Has proven to be reliable and fast and handles like a super sport

Some righteous inspiration in this thread. Picked this hideous little gremlin up for 500 bucks. My 1980 GS 450L. Appropriately dubbed, "Broomhilda", I rode this motherfucker into the GROUND (and on one occasion, my grandmother's back porch). Never bothered to wash it, never had to do jack to it, never refused to start, never let me sit (did lose both side covers on 2 different freeways, though!). Until the other day when it threw a rear spacer and fucked aaaaall kinds of shit up. Luckily, I have an '82 450L laying around for donor parts...in this case, the engine from it, which has less than 5k original on it. And today, my boss gave me the official go-ahead to use the shop to chop her up...he'll even help! Have a universal hardtail kit, a sporty tank, and a 4" headlight ready, plus a stock front fender from a '79 GS 1000 that fits perfectly on the rear tire. Just need a set of bars and she'll be good to go. Oh, and those ugly ass ammo cans are gonna come in handy for a battery box...

I'd like to see some rear suspension/swingarm mods on these GS's. I wish that I had a little lower seating position on my L but the wheelbase just seems a little short. I've decided after my last road trip when I hit a giant pothole (MI) that I kinda like my rear shocks.

Getting ready to put CMX shocks on my GS, if I can remember to pull the trigger on the auction before it expires haha.

I second this. Picked up a '79 the other day and after i started chopping, I realized that getting my seat height down is going to be the trickiest part of the build. My last scooter build was a hardtail and I'm kinda wanting to keep the suspension for now. I'm a short dude so I don't mind the mid controls, but that fucking rear wheel is really crampin' my space.

Hello GS/GR Owners.
Thought I would share and maybe save you a few cents:
My rectifier blew last weekend and I'm sure you are all aware of this common electrical problem with GS/GR's.
What is interesting to note is the symptoms.
I was riding along on a hot day and the bike cut out. The 'Main' fuse blew.
I replaced the fuse, on the side of the road, started the bike and the bike ran for 2 seconds and then the main fuse blew again. ...Repeat....infinitely.
Remedy: unplug the 3 stator wires (Blue/white, red/white & yellow) from the rectifier and I was back on the road....without a charging system.
I tested the resistance on the stator AKA 'generator' and it seems fine.
Don't waste fuses and time like I did!
-Scott

I haven't had to do an upgrade but a rectifier is a rectifier and you should be able to fit (may involve removing the connector or splicing the stock rectifier pigtail to the new rectifier) a higher wattage unit from another motorcycle.

Check the gsresources site as someone there may know a good choice.

Where are you guys getting the 'hardtails' for thr Gs bikes ?...b.

Westboundbiker
03-27-2015, 10:56 PM
Making them! Built, not bought man!

I see you're on a sporty? While Harley is nice now days, got so much aftermarket, I kinda like the struggle of being a less-built platform. (But I have always been about going against whatever is popular... music, shows, bikes... etc). Us GS guys have to fab shit from the ground up- it's fun, its a challenge. I actually re-purposed other portions of the frame into my hardtail.
Here's what I've got so far in my thread. The bike is all pulled apart now, just waiting for my boss' shop to be ready so I can sand blast, paint, and get her on the road! (and some finished pictures!)

Nice build you got going there 'Westie'. I've had an 81 gs750 in my garage for 10-12 yrs. just waiting for a re-build. Can't weld so i'm always hoping someone will come out with a 'pre-fabbed' hardtail for it. Keep up the good work...B.

Nice build you got going there 'Westie'. I've had an 81 gs750 in my garage for 10-12 yrs. just waiting for a re-build. Can't weld so i'm always hoping someone will come out with a 'pre-fabbed' hardtail for it. Keep up the good work...B.

You could have learned to weld like a master in that time. Just learn, that's half the fun of all this.

No kidding. I've done alright with a little Harbor Freight stick welder so far. Haven't done a hardtail, though. $500 would get you a MIG setup that could handle a hardtail though.

I haven't had to do an upgrade but a rectifier is a rectifier and you should be able to fit (may involve removing the connector or splicing the stock rectifier pigtail to the new rectifier) a higher wattage unit from another motorcycle.

Check the gsresources site as someone there may know a good choicehttp://www.thegsresources.com/
I'm running one from an 81 gs1100 on my 550. Works great.

Not sure where I'm going with my GS 1000. Here's where I'm at.
6" over swing arm. Sportster seat. Maybe the Moto Guzzi Tank. (Not sure yet) it's been like this for awhile. Rebuilding the engine.

One more question if you don't mind. Did you cut that fender or did you find one that would fit stock?

loddytoddy
04-23-2015, 9:34 AM
I cut the fender..
it was from a flh wide glide or something like that. I'd have to look at the tag if it's still there.
it was a brand new fender I got for free from a buddy.. so I just eyeballed it and started cutting.

Yeah I thought so. That's a pretty narrow space and I've had a hard time finding a simple fix. But thats the fun of it eh? Thanks for the info. I hope my gs ends up looking half as badass as some of the bikes on here.

Just started the build on it so its not very far along, but here is my 1979 GS75L. So far I have swapped out the bars, rear shocks and, seat. I did some modification to the rear with the stock fender, to shorten it up a bit and make it work better with the seat which is a Burly Brand Brat Seat for an early sportster. <br>61151

Lawdy lawdy.... I have an 82 GS650 that's HOT on my list. I need to sell my SV first, though. I have too many projects going on right now . This thread is dope, though. Lots of inspiration here. I want to keep my rear shocks, though. I admire the hardtail fabrication, but I'm too old & broken down to ride a HT. Not to mention, it's one of the things I like best about Sporties and Dynas.

It may or may not, it really depends on the bike. It may be a little quicker and darty when steering, but it might be fine. You won't know until you ride. Just take it easy that first couple of runs so you don't dump it.

bars I was a bit limited since they had to fit between the legs sticking up past the sides of the bar clamps and I'm to cheap/broke to buy clip ons so I made this dodgy set you see here. I'm happy with em I think. shocks are stockers I just went at em with some sos pads they are miracle workers for cleaning up shitty old parts!
