great looking stance frankenfab. That tank looks the goods. Keep the pics coming.

cool bike!

03-08-2010, 10:24 PM
thanks guys:) I realized after posting the photos that they are pretty out of date. I'll get some later for you.

There is a stuff that I am going to go back over for sure down the road, just want to get it going (well) for now and then work on detail stuff as I have the time.

03-11-2010, 1:09 AM
more recent. Wrapped some little shit up... waiting on a lot of little stuff in the mail too. Looking at these photos makes me want to drop the front end a bit more. Just gonna wait and see if it grows on me I guess. Take more after more shit shows up.

Is that a Marchal headlight? I've got a headlight fetish and was going to buy one of these suckers but the dude wanted 100 pappadums for it!

03-15-2010, 7:10 PM
Looks like a Unity Spot to me.

03-15-2010, 10:50 PM
It's a unity spotlight. Not a biggie to make into a headlight. If you get it complete they also have lots of other little bits you can use for other things.
The wiring for them is internal so there are aluminum cores in the fastners leading up to the bulb. I just took the final fastner that comes through the housing and turned the end down on the lathe,. then TIG welded a bolt to the small amount of steel surrounding the alum. core.
Took like an hour including taking the light apart etc. Then just make the applicable bracket.

Nice looking scoot. I like the small headlight too.

03-16-2010, 3:42 PM
It's torn down now to get paint on the frame.. nothing fancy, just to keep rust away. Will have it back together/have more photos of it in a couple days.

Re the light again. Found this via the HAMB and it may be helpful to others wanting to run a 6v on a 12v system:

the 7806 he talks about is not actually availble at the Radioshacks around here so I went ahead and ordered some from Digikey using the part number he lists. 497-1445-5-ND

03-16-2010, 5:06 PM
Damn, that bike is sick! What gas tank is that and what have you done to it?!?

03-16-2010, 5:28 PM
It was a hap jones wassell I think? I don't even know if I am spelling wassell correctly? Anyway.. It hung on the wall in my shop for a long time. Got it somewhere on the cheap knowing it was hiding some dirty secrets. When I wired the paint off I found that it had been "friscoed" via tacking a piece of flatstock over the front of the tunnel and below then the entire thing filled with body filler. Long story longer the entire bottom of the tank was rotten. I had to remake the bottom and just made it flat with a slight tunnel/sliiiigggghhhhht curves on the side to meet what was left of the original.

quick version = I cut up a piece of shit and wasted wayyy too much time making something usuable with it.

*** just re-mounted (hehehe mounted) the motor in the frame and fucked up a ton of the "custom" rattle can paint. Going to have to wait for said "fixed" paint to dry to get the rest back together.

03-16-2010, 5:32 PM
Well it has a great shape to it now. Looks excellent.

03-16-2010, 5:44 PM
Thanks man, I appreciate it. Have more time on my end than money.

03-19-2010, 8:36 PM
did you do your own hard tail or was it bought?the bike looks great!im in the process of doin one of these and im havin just as much fun as i did buildin the harley, but way less money!

03-19-2010, 9:49 PM
All the fabrication work done by me/the hardtail is all hand bent on my welding table with a torch and dies. Really would like to get a bender eventually but for now it works.

03-19-2010, 10:14 PM
As of tonight. Kinda having to rush some shit to shift my focus to other builds that I need to get onto. Going to have to revisit some shit on this but 1)need to get on the road again 2) need to get back on the road.
Gotta do some mechanical/finish up some fabrication tomorrow. Should be able to pop it on Sunday.

03-26-2010, 6:20 PM
Ok... so sans the throttle cable I need and a tad bit of tuning this is pretty much it. Going to re work stuff here and there when I have time but this is enough for now. Need to work on other shit.

03-26-2010, 6:33 PM
Nice and clean man! Great build. That headlight fit damn perfect!

03-26-2010, 6:36 PM
Thanks man :)

Yeah, having trouble with the unity spotlight as finding 4" sealed beams isnt so easy. Tried the light that is on and totally loved it.. so there you go. Totally stoked on it.

03-26-2010, 6:42 PM
fucking rad man!

03-26-2010, 7:16 PM
Hell yeah! that thing looks rad.

03-27-2010, 4:28 PM
looks good. i think im gonna flip my rear brake setup as well. did you stretch the rearend past stock at all??

03-27-2010, 5:00 PM
No, no stretch. I really really dislike the way XS' look with stretch and that huge void it creates in the rear before the wheel. Looks fucking horrible.

03-27-2010, 6:01 PM
im with ya there. mines not getting any stretch

03-27-2010, 10:05 PM
yeh I agree with the stretch, I'm regretting not getting less on mine, but I'll fill the void with.... I dunno, STUFF!

03-27-2010, 10:15 PM
Shit man, if you dislike it that much just cut the fucker down and re do it. One of the many many awesome things about working with metal.

03-28-2010, 6:45 PM
haha, I'm not regretting it that much, I'm just working with what Ive got! I'm making a dummy tank that I'll keep a tool roll in, maybe my electrics as well and I'm a tall bastard too.

Mines got 3 inches, I'd never go more, blokes stretch 4-5 inches and that's too long!

03-29-2010, 1:40 AM
hey frankenfab, what's that Brake lever you're running there, and is it 7/8 or 1 inch bar size?

03-29-2010, 3:09 AM
Its a radial master cylinder. Used to be 7/8 but was taken out to fit 1" bars.

03-29-2010, 8:57 PM
Radial master cylinder. What brand is it if you don't mind me bothering you, the only ones I've seen are Brembo units and they're nowhere near as neat as yours?

Also, you planning on running a reservoir or going to stick with your plugged tube!?

03-29-2010, 10:24 PM
Nissin is the brand.
The tube is all that is necssary once it's set up which is why I am running it... wanted the low key nature of it. Stops on a fucking dime.

03-29-2010, 11:38 PM
how do you fill the tube, syringe it in? Just keep some brake fluid handy I suppose, at least you can quickly and easily see if you're running low!

03-29-2010, 11:54 PM
Forget it.
