so i stopped by the local dealership today and was talking to one of the clothing girls. She showed me a catalog of the "black label" stuff that will be released fall/winter 2010.

Low and behold but what do i see on the page but a 3/4 rootbeer flake helmet. With the ungodly price of $195 attached to it. Im sure its DOT since its HD but i just started laughing

Its like the Company is monitoring all websites and seeing what everyone is doing before releasing stuff- of course about 3 years too late...

Right on schedule.

WG: "I want to know everything we can about these kids. What shoes do they wear? What's the chance we can charge just as much for denim vest as we can for leather? What's their favorite cologne scent? Can we get some pictures from their group functions and have R&D draw up some copy cat lines? What brand of cigar do they smoke? What brand of beer do they like? Let's get the ball moving on this people, time is money!"

PEON1: "I'm pretty sure they drink only Blue Ribbon beer."

WG: "Good. That's a start..."

well if you were the slightest bit smart about your business, you would be lurking on webistes and forums that have to do with your product.

well if you were the slightest bit smart about your business, you would be lurking on webistes and forums that have to do with your product.

if that were the case, that would eliminate the R&D dept, all they would have to do is copy what everyone is doin on websites and forums....

or you could be like ducati and actually develop the bike online on your website and take comments and criticisms from your potential customers...

And again my statement was that even if they were doin that they are 3 years behind the times....

then again HD is tryin to reinvent the wheel and aim their products at 20 something year olds....
thats the reason for the nightster, the 48, iron 883....

The "sale" bin is worth the trip inside if you are up to the task of wading through piles of chrome add-ons. I've been scoring some good stuff lately.

well, what we could do is suck it up and start rockin' sequins and rhinestones on our helmets and gear for about a year or two... I got a little sick as I was saying that. Sweet revenge!!!

I wonder just how long design and/or new product ideas at HD get tossed around in commitees and "research groups" before getting out the door. They always do seem to be 2 or 3 years behind the peak of stuff - the nightster and iron, now the 48 in the sportster line - all ape what guys/gals have been doing in their garage for years now.

WG: "How long does it take our authorized (read: chinese) factories to crank out our new MoCo Uber~Flake Helmets?"

PEON2: "There's a nine month prototype and testing period Sir. Followed by a six month screening process. That's where we insert our new product into the hands of celebrities and high profile targets allowing them to borrow the items until such time as a novelty effect occurs. Then there's a solid year of expense data crunching that takes account 12 months to overprice the item. If there's a silver lining on the entire process Sir, most of the demand for the product was already created by "lesser" independent companies, who threaten our market in no way, but actually create they very markets we hope to exploit ahead of us. It's quite ingenious Sir. They do the work for us...."

i started the thread...

the thread was started to express how hd is about 3 years behind in everything; hell i find it funny the 48 states as a feature " the mirror is upside down under the handlebars"

the "peon" comments are hillarious...

HD is about making money and getting new riders to buy bikes= thus the nightster, the 48 etc...
they sell an image; hell look at their advertising. their models are tattooed now, the bikes are flat black, now the helmets are flaked...

they say imitation is the ultimate form of flattery....take it for what it is and continue to chop and ride what you have...

Yea they are three years behind, but they are trying to stay afloat. I really can't blame them, it's pretty obvious that there is a HUGE culture out of this certain style and why would HD want to shut them out completely? If you think about it, not many if any large motorcycle companies have embraced this part of the motorcycle culture yet. You can't stay on the fringe forever, it was bound to happen.

They are a business, that is in the business of making money or else they wouldn't be a business. Serious business.

Hahahaha, this is ALL hilarious....
People in their twenties pissed that HD is copying them, when in fact we have been copying others this whole time. Fucking Bell and more than a handful of other companies have been making 3/4 helmets for roughly 30 years now and you people act as though you/we made this shit up, when all your doing is riding stockers with bolt on action parts, and copying a digger that you saw in a 70's mag or turning a tracker into a street tracker of some sort. I do those things as well and this does piss me off a bit but I have to recognize HD has been in business longer than I have been alive - personally I dont / wont ride an HD, they are ghey piles of shit that feed the masses (doesnt mean Ill never own one, Ive always wanted a 60's sporty) but if you do happen to ride an HD, just ride your bike and be happy that you ride the way you want. Were all posers people and we didnt invent the first rodeo!
What makes a poser - A person concerned about what other people are doing.

I agree with you thats why i was tryin to say in my most recent post.
HD has to change with the times to continue to stay in business.
look back in 1999, you would never see anyone in a HD catalog showing tattooes....especially neck tattooes....

They are not setting trends they are trying to make money off of trends which is what any smart business does...

...How many of you are wearing vans and flannel right now?...

I worked in a lumber mill for six years in the early nineties. Talk about flannel. Couldn't wear Van's at work, but whatever. We were a giant walking Pendleton catalog. Not cause they were cool, but because they were quality.

If you'll remember, that was about the time of "Grunge". Cobain, thanks for ruining rock. Suddenly, I'm in style? Me? The beauty of it all...I could always find nice flannels for work. The price went up a tad, but the selection was great.

I got pissy for a bit. But guess what? I saw the same dudes I always saw. And we were all wearing flannel. Nothing changed. The hipsters never showed up at the bar next to the mill. Grunge went away and the next thing came along. Now it seems like everybody is wearing their sister's pants.

Trends come and go, you may find that you're here on a trend of your own. Maybe it'll stick for life, maybe you'll be riding a Vespa in a year. But the guys that hump the trend probably won't show up at your "bar", you'll see the same dudes, wearing the same thing. Nothing will change.

And yep, I still wear flannels.

Allen
02-22-2010, 10:33 AM
I can't wear Vans cause they offer the worst flat arch support. Flannels always shrink on me and make my fat ass look even fatter. The only racing stripes I've ever had were on condoms during hazy college years cause alcohol made anything possible. I got a garage full of Star Wars action figures from the 70's and 80's to prove beyond the shadow of a honda I'm older than a tween. I could never afford a Harley back then anyway, there was just NO WAY making $3.35 an hour! And I have a slight sarcasm problem, and these things pop into my head. Some people make ugly bikes... some people make ugly posts. Thanks for visiting my profile. Thats all.

Its pretty easy to spot someone who's new to the "trends." A 20 sumpin' guy on an a road king asked me yesterday about my old 70's Buco that I painted. He asked me where I got it. Told him "you can find it anywhere'" and that's all. He'll go out and get one and still look like a doofus. But if he's feeling good about it, God bless him. Doesn't make him my BFF. Let the sheep follow the herd. More food for the wolves!

They have been around for a hundred years, so changing with the times isn't something new for them. It just so happens that they are following a trend created by supposed ex-BMXers and washed up Skaters, who are naturally rebelious when it comes to daddy telling them to clean their rooms, or the cops to tell them that they can't ride their shed-stick on school campuses.

Since it's headed to the Junk Pile anyway....

Though the Harley Davidson owner(s) rarely look alike, they share several common characteristics. They commonly wear clothing with a sophisticated logo imprint, which allows them to recognize and identify with other Harley Davison owners. This imprint usually appears on tattoos, t-shirts and leather goods. Leg chaps, leather jackets, and riding vests particularly in later appearances. Adornment with cloth patches and sometimes “metal pins” also indicates a hierarchy level within the group. They also usually have most if not all of their clothing a black or a custom dark color, giving them an almost zombie-like appearance. Said skin was originally dry and human-looking, but it later had a more "slick" look to it, with the addition of leather safe luster lotions and chrome polishers. The character template is based on the 100 plus year old "bad guy" image who “don’t do fear” of historical motorcycle owners, with influences from a wide variety of sources including but not limited to San Francisco’s Castro Street, World War II fighter pilots, Rob Halford, and Sha Na Na.

Owing to their authorized factory purchases, from leather handlebar grip covers with fringe caps to the almost mandatory “guardian bell” all HD owners feel far superior then non-Harley Davidson owners to varying degrees (depending on their accessory level and popularity within the HOG). However, they never ride-hard to their destination, and hence most other bikes can outpace them. HD owners are resistant to non-HD commercialism, being completely immune to any brand deviation.

Individual HD owners rarely ride solo except in cases where such transportation is necessary. Instead, they travel in small to large groups, sending a collective visual and audio message through their stylized dress and engine sound, particularly the exhaust mufflers to any commuters or pedestrians, drowning out the information from the evening news, declaring their aged-old historically accurate collective decry: "So Screw It, Let’s Ride!”

The girls pants are the skinny leg jeans that the metro-sexual kids are wearing now adays.. And KingDeadBeat was kiddin on the sporty comment.. alot of his guys ride sportys... Alot of guys ride sporty's on here but they are chopped on, played with or rescued from a junk pile. I got a chopped one, Dale has an ironhead chopper and there are plenty of other guys ridin em that people are not gonna call girls. No one really takes that stuff to heart (unless your THAT guy with a brand new nighty and a big ole harley bobble head helmet and enough swap meet leather to kill a herd of cows, callin everyone bro and tellin em to check out your bobber) and thats what this thread is about Bobbleheads ;)
