i bought a 71 xs650. the most i can get out of it is 65 mph. it was suppose to have been rebuilt before i got it, you can see new gaskets, but it wont go any faster. is there a solution where i dont have to tear the whole thing down and replace cams? can anyone help me out?

Check carbs, ignition tuning and exhaust before tearing into the engine. Then Valve Adjustment and Cam Chain Tension would be a good look...

Short of the cam being 1 tooth off (which would not get you to 65MPH) I doubt its somthing internal if it spins and runs freely otherwise....

Aslo, if its a points bike, make sure the advance unit is free

correct, a sticking advance unit will rob all sorts of power.. pop the covers off and rev the engine the bob weights should fling out while revving and retract when letting off... if not... grease the rod with moly-lube
