Not sure what section to post on but I need to dip into the wealth of knowledge here on the cc... Replacing the stock tank on my vulcan 500. Bike has a dual backbone, diamond shape. I have a lead on a sporty tank a guy says he thinks is from a 1995. Can anyone share sendifferences between the tanks of different years (if there is any)? I am going to look at it tmw and can get it on the cheap, but would like some advice first... Thanks

Try "American"
Or even jap section to find out whats compatible.............
But I got a bunch of different style sporty tanks in line for paint right now.
I got 2 of the newer style that should fit a much larger backbone than 90's or older tank.......
BRB.....I'll go snap a couple pics.

Thanks alot man. I've been tryin all kinds of search strings and doing some eGay research for photos. I am hoping to get a tank that will basically ride the rails and look like a frisco mount and then hide the electronics in the tunnel. I am still very much a newb and can use all the help/photos I can get!!

your not gonna get that at all...it either hugs the backbone or its frisco'd not both

If it helps, this is what I'm working with. I was hoping the outside edge of the tank would run along the rails, but it's obviously be mounted front and back (if that makes sense) unless you can offer other options?

This one could probably hide a bunch of junk under it........

And it's got a butt ton of room. Dunno what year this is off of.
I have two of them.
Takes a modern petcock. 22mm?
This one, and then one in primer.
Newer. And the petcock is towards the front. It fits "frisco" on my shovel's fatbob mounts.

And just to make this thread useful, if anyone knows, put a year range to match these tanks. I'd say this one is in the 2000's.

I'll attach some pics of the mounts too.

I'm def liking that paint! And that's pretty much what I need. Something I can stash electronics under out of sight. It has a fat bob style tank on it now that's doing me no justice. Thanks for the photos man, def appreciate it. Hopefully someone can identify and put some years to these

Sittin pretty in white waiting for my wife to try painting a tank.

Well I guess I will have to see tmw when I check out the one available. The guy says he thinks its from a 95, but sounded very unsure. I'm hoping the petcock location doesn't interfere with the rail, or it may need to be moved I guess. I'm assuming that's the worse that can happen.

Here is a later style.......80's to 90's?
Internally threaded filler bung. Vented.....takes some plastic cap.
Bottom is same as the 75 and later one I posted.
22mm petcock, 2.4?
Not dented, just smoothing out some grinder marks and molded the the front and rear smoove.

And here's a janky Ebay special that I shoulda left alone......
Aftermarket, single hole mount up front.....lotta work happened to this tank before lol.
Takes 55-75 3/8 NPT thread petcock and cam style cap.
Pretty much the same as most any older sporty tank on the bottom.
Looks the same as the white one.....here's the mounts.........

Oh yeah, heads up. Don't strip some tanks down to bare metal.......cuz you may not find it, lol.

In the photos I've seen, it seems the older tanks (pre 75) have a basically flat bottom on them. I need a tank like that to sit securely on my rails. And the length is important as well since I need it to cover the large gap in the center

Here's a GME tank.....pretty stock. Takes 55-75 petcock, stock location. On a 71 sporty....

Note the sweet molding on the tank.

Here is a more modern....3.somethin sporty tank........It's longer. My buddy has one mounted on his DOHC honda CB......looks decent, but he put a sight guage and junk on his.
This one is on a Pan outside of Farm N Fleet.

Pretty sure my buddy had that kind on his 03 sporty, It is Longer which isn't always gravy....

your better off with just keeping your stock tank

Here's my buddy's 70 CB with a sporty tank.
I HATE the way it looks with those stupid frame rails.........like a lot. But somethin inside of him wanted a "peanut tank".......

Workin with some rails kinda like that???

I'm working with this.... Only diff is this guy went the hard tail route and cut right where that diamond would have connected, but that wouldn't matter really. I just want something to mount on top of here. 2nd photo is a tank mounted on this exact bike (yes I've tried contacting this guy). And 3rd photo is stock tank on it, very disproportionate the way I want to go

........Well, hear me out.
This is the tank it came with.
Not Really a "Craigslist Boober Bobber" .
It was a "survivor" but not a pretty showbike, just a survivor. Heated backbone for rake etc....
Anyway. A possible solution.....

A SUPERGLIDE TANK!!!.....
Hella sexy......

Covered the rails pretty well. And they're pretty common I think because they aren't as desirable cuz they're wider.......
http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj620/heykidbyrnes/028-2.jpg
.......not for everyone.

Lol....Bummer.
I came into a "Frisco'd" low/no tunnel Superglide tank that had two bolts sticking out the bottom that woulda been perfect for you until I lopped off the bolts.

I ended up welding a tab on the front to run it on my bike.......but then I discovered where they filled in the tunnell has a sleight weep.
I'm gonna try to fill it with lead.......then I'll re mold the tank pretty and hit it with some paint.

Found the pics.

If all else fails I'm hoping I can cut off the bottom of the tank and have someone make a set up like TJ Brutal Customs does it the vlx bikes to run sporty tanks (I don't know his name on here) but it looks simple enough ?

Is that a Hummer tank? It looks too wide to be? Pretty sweet. That'd be about the only awesome way to run a speedo. I'll give you 36 bucks lol. Just kiddin. Sweet score.
Here's a Harley Hummer......

it may very well be a hummer, but i think it might a king sporty..
lol @ 36 bux...=)
what...when it fits my bike perfectly.?.no way...:)
i think it may have been a twin-bunged king sporty someone modded...
whatever the case, its really, really cool,IMHO.
btw, think there's a way to positively ID this tank?
(the petcock seems to be on the correct side.)

There is also the 1966 to 1971 Sportster XLH "Turtle tank"...long low and wide, holds 4 gals. Thats what im running on my Ironhead bobber.

I like this tank because EVERYBODY uses the horrendously overdone and boring "peanut tanks.

Do a search because I dont know how to post a photo.
