Ok associated builders this is your spot and your chance to show off you talents. Something tells me the 12 are gona have a run for their money! By showcasing the "Official Dozen" and and the "Associated builder's Separately it allows a place for the shit talkers to focus their energies and show them up in a friendly way right here on this thread. So bring out your best boys!

If for some reason one of the "Official Dozen" can't complete their bike by June 30th, field promotions will come from the ranks of the "Associated Builders".

Please post a shot of your build in its current state and some words about the direction you taking.

Remember if you're on the "Associated Builders" winning list you need to email me bear@oldbikebarn.com to claim you spot and get set up for your builders support package.

This is Magic Carpet Ride in it's current state. Plan: 70s style Triumph chop. Anyway I've dilly dicked around with this bitch long enough time to get my ass in gear and put her Greasy ass on the road. First pic, me and a mached up her before I get this other frame, second pic current state, third pic Mach up in current frame.

Bro I know how disappointed you were to not be in the 12 but its effing awesome how you manned up right away and are leading by example out of the gate as and "Associated builder" this is just the kind of attitude we need to support and grow "built not bought" culture. I'm not impressed with a few of the sour almost angry emails I got from a few guys.

You got it right fosho, respect!

I look forward to seeing your progress. -Bear

P.S. now I'm gona shut up an let this thing unfold some... lets see them bikes!

the plan is to do a cafe, but still haven't decided if I should do some frame chopping and make it a mono shock...Opinions?

Here's my xs650 I'm building. 1960s chopper influenced with lots of one off goodies. Full engine rebuild, custom frame, rebirth'ed narrow springer, it will be a showcase for all of the parts I've been developing over the past year or so. Stoked for this opportunity thanks again bear. 33433 my roller hand built one of frame
33434 jockey shift
33435 Good luck pegs I make.
33436 repurposed 60s caddy hubcaps
33437 bloodleather seat.

I bought this bike completely torn down... It was a stock frame and about 100 zip lock baggies full of motor parts... Can't wait to get it on the road.

Didn't make it to the 12, but happy to be an Associated Builder... For those that haven't caught my build, make your way here:
http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24515

It's slow right now, but will hopefully be done by April. Doing this without many tools and on a budget with the help of friends. Almost all the parts I've picked up, including the bike, has come from Chop Cult members.

So my name is on the list and I am building a bike but I never officially entered. Though I would love to take advantage of some great deals, I don't feel like I should. I will continue to support this and believe it is a GREAT idea. Congrats to all and I will be following along.:cheersmate:

Glad to be a part of this! I've always spread the gospel of "Built Not Bought", but now I've got even more ammo for my arsenal when I get to tell folks what a great opportunity it is to be an Associated Builder!

Thanks to Bear & all the folks @ OBB! :clap for you:

A lot has happened since I signed up for this competition. I was supposed to be turning a 1989 Honda Transalp into a flat tracker. I got the bike for free a couple years ago.
http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4125/4841259542_d425df62ec_z.jpg

This is what I was supposed to be building:
http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4104/4840800023_bc9429a44f_z.jpg

I was really looking forward to doing a Honda V twin tracker, but the frame modifications and the new intake system where going to require a lot of fab work. The donor bike was a 600cc which is a little small, but I heard you could convert a Shadow 750 engine to chain drive (from shaft) with VT600 parts and install it in the Transalp frame. Last spring I found the right Shadow for cheap:
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5069/5626608026_ee4a2bdb6e_b.jpg

Shortly after I applied for GD I pulled the shadow into the shop. It's accumulated a little dust since I parked it.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8209/8197900009_93f70a0567_c.jpg

after a lot of engine examination I found the Shadow 750 and the Transalp 600 engines have nothing in common (the internet lied to me!). There is no way this engine will fit in the TA and that chain drive conversion crap I read about is completely wrong.

If I built this bike with the 600cc Transalp engine it would make the same power as the tracker I built last year, but it would weigh more. I lost interest quickly and put the Transalp up for sale as a parts bike. I had 5 buyers for it in two hours (crazy). The Shadow will get rebuilt and sold.

Earlier this fall I bought a '75 CB400F that came in buckets.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8171/7998033341_cc0b732038_z.jpg

It took a few weeks to put together
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8049/8098976298_08c6ea2781_z.jpg

I sold the CB the day after I sold the Transalp so I had a wallet full of money but no winter project. The next day I found a 1970 Ironhead on CL. I went and picked it up that afternoon for $2000.

Well shit, this thing's ready to head to EDR like it sits, but it's not my style so it will get rebuilt into a tracker. I started off building an RS750 replica, now I'll be building that bike's biggest competition: the XR750

http://i47.tinypic.com/2ivxoo2.jpg

That orange paint is a little played so either I'll go with a bare metal and a few decals or with an Evel Kievel scheme.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8216/8308214031_6c34d4ec4b_z.jpg

I pulled off the shock mounts and had them machined down to fit modern sportster shocks.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8082/8253654598_275b056851.jpg

Biltwell should have some long-travel shocks coming out next month and I'll probably be going with them.

I also pulled off the rear drum cover to fix a gouge that must have been caused by a bolt rubbing on it

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8224/8253654504_dc811c348b.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8360/8253654296_ddcd7b146b.jpg

I've also rebuilt the clutch, but I didn't take any pictures of it. I found a full front end for $500 (conventional forks, trees, disk brake, caliper, master cylinder, and 19" wheel). It should have arrived a couple days ago, but I'll be on the road for a few more days so I haven't been able to install it yet.

Bear, I shot you an email for Associated Builder, I was likely one of the first to hit you up as Linkbelt was. I'm sure you likely just overlooked it, as I'm guessing your inbox is overflowing. I'm not salty at all that you guys didn't pick my 45 year old odd ball bike, its a 45 year old odd ball bike, hahaha.
I haven't really gotten much further on my engine tear down, I ended up getting sick earlier in the week, but I did manage to go out and make up a kick ass points cover yesterday.
I'll just post a link to my build thread over in the Brit/Euro section here (http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25885)
And of course I'm going to let folks know that you can build a bike in your home garage with a limited budget and limited tools. Let the madness begin !
For those click impaired here is a couple of snapshot's of the points cover that I worked up. (sory for the crappy pix my camera was acting up)

Great Idea on the Associated Builders thing... Lets the guys who didn't make the 12 still participate.

FWIW: Our shop, Cerberus Moto in San Diego is based around a Co-Op of sorts... We do our own thing here, but have extra space we are using for Members.. Workspace, full tools, etc. Build your own bike!!

Our submission will progress slowly, maybe making it under the 12's deadline.. Maybe. I'll post progress pics. Anyone that needs help/advice/etc, please hit me up.

I'm right on the boat with how much has changed since I signed up for this. Originally I was just changing a few things on my '71 IH and building some pieces for it.
Now I'm going a slightly different direction.

2 bikes.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d123/facethegrave/The%207165%20Build/photo-6.jpg

1965 XLCH-Barn find-Motor needs to be gone through after it sat for 10+and became home to many a rodent. I got hired by a guy and took this in trade instead of payment.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d123/facethegrave/The%207165%20Build/71first_zpsd7ee272c.jpg

1971 XLCH-Bought cheap from a guy that needed it gone. Ran like shit when I got it. Swapped out the carb with a Super-E and it runs like a top. Looking to redo the wiring and I don't really like the shape of the frame.

The Idea... Take the guts from the '71 and put it in the frame from the '65 after I hard tail it. I own them both. Titles for both. The 65 Frame is much nicer.

-Hard tail '65 frame
-Build my own exhaust.
-Repair some of the janky ass shit the previous owners fucked up.
-Decide between the 4over or stock front ends.
-Rewire
-Run the 16" invader rear and spoked front with dual drums.
That should be enough to keep me busy for a while.

My ultimate goal will be to get the '65 Motor back in the 65 Frame but I can't afford the stuff that that motor needs this time around. So, this will be the direction the build goes with a deadline of 2013 riding weather in Wisconsin (about 3 months)

Here is how it sits today.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d123/facethegrave/The%207165%20Build/Start_zpsbe30479f.jpg

Pumped to be even the smallest bit a part of this thing. Hope I can help some others along the way. Love critique so bring it on.

Well guys I got the day off due to whether here in Texas, so to the shop I went. First things first since my shop is my back porch and there are no doors to close out came the old salamander heater. Then it was off to work on the bike. First I had already fabricated some tabs for the lower motor mounts. Now to get them attached. Got me a piece of 1"×2" square tube and went to work laying it out.33482
Then a little fun with the drill press and a 1" bi-metal hole saw bit.33483
Next broke out the 4-1/2" grinder with a cutting disk and check fitment.33484
Then tack them all in33485 and33486 The first time I did this I took for granted that they were center. There is a 1/4" off set on the lower mounts. Anyway that's my progress for today.

Stoked to be a part of the associateds. Here's what I got, hopefully the pics post up better than my original gd entry. First pic is where she's at, second and third are more or less where I imagine her going.
And the last one is the cb750 super sport that I'm rushing to finish so I can get started on this.
Good luck y'all. Awesome that this has provided motivation for so many projects.
If any builders are around sf holler. Always down to lend a hand, share some knowledge, have some beers etc.

Way excited to be a part of this and pretty stoked to see all these bikes gettin built. Progress has been a little jumpy. Picked up a '79 XS650 for the donor and rode the piss out of her for a while, more because she already had full fenders and I discovered how much Oregon rain can suck without them. One of the cylinders quit firing so I decided it was time for a teardown. This is what she looked like before:

<a href="http://s1131.beta.photobucket.com/user/MalawibwanA/media/photo10_zpse6de88eb.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m560/MalawibwanA/photo10_zpse6de88eb.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"/></a>

Started tearing into her and found this in the headlight bucket:

<a href="http://s1131.beta.photobucket.com/user/MalawibwanA/media/photo12_zps7842b97f.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m560/MalawibwanA/photo12_zps7842b97f.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"/></a>

This puts me in the fear since the PO said he installed a Hughs PMA kit. I'm really hoping he didnt use party balloons for that install.

Also split a sporty tank I got for pretty cheap here and started welding it back together:

<a href="http://s1131.beta.photobucket.com/user/MalawibwanA/media/photo11_zpse35ec0d7.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m560/MalawibwanA/photo11_zpse35ec0d7.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"/></a>

As I am A) Not too great with straight lines and my angle grinder and B) only just started learning to weld a few months ago, its not going exactly as planned. I'll post some pics of the tank currently but I'm pretty sure I screwed it up and I'm none too stoked on the way it looks anyhow. Chances are I'll keep building a tank out of it for the practice but I think I'm going to go in a different direction.

Thanks a ton Bear for the support and for coming up with the whole Greasy Dozen! I'll keep it posted as things come together.

I was probably one of the first to email and it took a couple of days but he got to me! Bear's a stand up guy and I'm very happy to be associated with this gathering of underground builders. Got a little more done today but took a little spill on a Shovel project I've been working on for a friend (luckily no real damage) so no pics tonight. my short chop has not really shown any progress, do to work schedule... After the engine/trans rebuild, it fell from being a top priority

I did have a shorter seat made, to sit down into the bike. I dug up an old Indian chief luggage rack for the rear fender. I also finished the controls, although I have not picked them up from the chrome shop. This pic still shows the conical hub, but I have a sprung hub to go on the bike. it has been relaced to a new rim, and I just have to get a 19 inch rear tire before installation... I wanted some rear suspension and fenders because I live in the mountains. A rigid with no fenders would not really work all that well here
the bike will be will be shot in Tangerine Candy
http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad123/wreckingcrewstands/triumphmockup_zpsfea15148.jpg

another problem is that two different harley big twins have come up for sale, and I could not step away from the deals. Triumphs are cool and all, but when you stand 6' 4", the harley is a better fit. I had a plan for this bike, but right now I am considering selling it, and dumping the money into a custom dyna idea

I really like how this thread has a communal vibe, compared to a solo build thread, this gives us all a little more action to look at and I feel it will help motivate guys to keep the progress going.

Nice work so far guys.

I'm not sure if I should be an associated builder or what. I didnt make the cut and have no hard feelings about that what-so-ever and wish everyone the best of luck with their projects. However I think I'd like to say something here in case one of the cafe racers falls off the boat so I have a shot at getting in some sort of publication after completion. That being said, here is my build thread:

http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=39224.0

and here is a pic (camera has been broken so this mock-up is the most recent picture of the whole thing that I have):

You did make the cut as an associated builder (see the list) and you were in the running as a winner in the Cafe Category the issue was we needed 1 first time builder and one shop per category, then we needed at least 1 Sportster Cafe... and that narrowed things down pretty fast. I bet you can understand how the criteria made things complex and it was not always about how cool a build was or talented a builder is.Thats the nature of the GD giving a chance to first time builders and indie shops. I hope you continue to post on this thread you have a very cool build going. -Bear

Oh, I noticed the associated builder thing, but I meant "the cut" as one of the official. I am very excited to see a sportster cafe though - I've always liked those projects (to be honest, that's probably my next project). Im actually moving along pretty quick these days so I should be able to post something interesting if I can get my hands on a functioning camera. It doesn't matter at this point, but this is my first build. It's easy going when you've been welding since 13 and I also have the support of the shop I'm apprenticing at. Very excited seeing the diversity of builds and I'll make it a personal goal to make the raddest cafe I can.

Every body builds Cafes out of Guzzi s but I think a good looking chopper will be a lot harder and sometimes hard is good. This is a pile of 70s V7 and 850 T parts.

Hey you greasy cats, not really any progress this week. I had to work Saturday and worked the swap meet today. I managed to pick up what I believe to be a 1969 Triumph T120R bottom end (cases, crank, rods, cams, cam gears, and complete transmission) for 80 bucks. Also picked up a nice heavy leather jacket for 75 and a cool flat black skid lid with some cool pin striping on it for 15. I think I did well good times guys. I'll post some pics of the bottom end I got when I get to tearing it apart. Which reminds me anyone have a spare Triumph can gear puller? somehow the threads in the handle of mine got crossed.

Ok gents,

First off- what a great opportunity that Bear at the Old Bike Barn has offered all of us novice garage builders- Thanks!

Here's my first post as an AB of the GD- my winter project, a brat style build of a 1981 Kawasaki KZ550C.

She's part of my currents stable of 6 project bikes- I'd have more but the garage is full, and the girlfriend doesnt want me starting a boneyard out in her backyard. She owns the house where we live, so gets to make that rule!

Anyway, this build will be part of the Greasy Dozen Associated Builders thread. Im actually running mu own separate build thread at;

http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?p=428321&posted=1#post428321

and will be posting the link back here every time i make a new post.

Below is a pic of the weather outside in Reno, Nevada where I live- obviously not riding weather, or I'd be out doing that versus wrenching in the garage. Also attached is a picture of the beautiful Bobbi Starr, whom this bike is named after (I always name my bikes after favorite porn stars) along with a few shots of the bike (with me) from when it arrived, to its current condition.

More to follow...

Like you choices in bike names Farnie! Been busy with other crap past couple of days and had to work this morning but got the rear spacers made up, chopped up the factory rear brake caliper bracket to put it in a different position (still have to make the stay for it) and got mu new bars bent and tacked together. Tomorrow I hope to get the stay made and weld up and polish the bars.

ouch - you couldn't find anyone with a break? Doesn't matter now, and it looks perfect so it worked out for you. Sorry the chrome won't be happening for you - I might have missed it if you mentioned it earlier, but what colors are you going with? *you will also have to be logged in on OBB with the account Bear set up for you, details of which shoulda been in the email from him.

Don't know if you all are familiar with Moto Guzzi prices but this poor boy cant afford $275.00 pistons and $750.00 cylinders so I'm making sleeves out of 87mm VW cylinders. This improves the bore from 82.5mm.

Moving forward.

Had trouble settling on a solid plan.

This is not very gearhead but I'm always fascinated by the process by which anything is made. So here is the new screen for the official Greasy Dozen T-Shirt, I think it looks cool inverted. I want to thank Christian Acker of www.adnauseum.net (http://www.adnauseum.net) and Tom Jolley of www.rockandride.com (http://www.rockandride.com) for their collaboration on the creation of these unique T-Shirts to support the cause. -Bear

Looks like that dude's not only "out" of the GDAB, but he's out of CC as well?

Dudes are dropping like flies & I can't figure why you'd be "out"? Out of getting parts at Bear's cost? Out of enjoying the hospitality of a man doing his part to support the scene? I, for one, am willing to bend over backwards and do whatever's necessary to get set up and reap the benefits of this deal... even if that just means being a little patient.

Speaking of which, I dropped you an email last night Bear. I neglected to mention my CC handle here, but the email was from baelzbub @ hotmail . com, so I hope it made sense & there wasn't too much detective work that needed to be done. Get back to me when you can, no worries.

Back on topic here. I got my oil cooler mounted. One step closer to getting her on the road. I totally munged up the oil filter bolt, but I was stoked to see that OBB carries a replacement part!

This puts me in the fear since the PO said he installed a Hughs PMA kit. I'm really hoping he didnt use party balloons for that install.

Lol party balloons in the bucket...at least it's not Coney Island Whitefish in there:

Ok there seems to be some confusion still from a few bros on how to claim your spot as an Associated and supported builder.

1.You had to of participated in the GD in the first place by entering a post prior to December 23rd. (list of qualified bros below)

2. To claim your spot in the ranks of the GD Associated Builders all you need to do is email me at bear@oldbikebarn.com and I will respond with all the details of your build support. (subject line Associated Builder) Included you full name and phone number.

The names below are listed by Chop Cult screen name or your personal name depending whether you were a friend, fan, customer or how we have been in contact.

Many of you have been set up those that have not have until Jan 21st to respond.

Thanks for all the support and great posts for The Greasy Dozen, this has defiantly had a positive impact for the grassroots garage builder scene!

Here is the list of associated builders again!

I plan to start a build thread in the American section once the hardtail is in and there is more substance to share. But for you guys... This is where I sit today.

A refresher of where we started. I was originally going to make 2 bikes out of my 65 and 71 IH's

Chose to leave the 65 alone and work solely off the '71 motor and frame using just the wheels from the '65

Here is how the bike looked when I brought it home.

That mustang tank will be on this build. Trying my hand a shaving and cleaning my trees while I wait. Nixing the 4 over. Ordering the bungs to mount the tank and some bungs to turn my chumps into riserless bars.

Today I was able to make some good progress.
Started cleaning more of the parts to get them ready for paint.
Prepped and packed the gas tank to send off to get it coated by Elizabeth radiator.
Started taking the wheels apart to get them ready for new spokes and probably trip to the powder coated.

The biggest thing I did today was to tear into the engine and determine why it wouldn't turn over. Turns out that the #2 & #4 cylinder had some rust holding the pistons in place. After 30 or so minutes of coaxing with a dead blow hammer the engine was turning over very freely.

That was my biggest fear of this bike, that I wouldn't be able to use the engine with out a complete tear down.

Here are some pictures.

Decided to assemble the lower end next. So I needed to remove the sludge trap plug and clean all the metal out of there this morning. It decided not to move I pulled the 10mm hex round in the aluminum plug, then broached the plug to 7/16" Allen after that rounded out, I broached it to 1/2" Allen and rounded that out also! By then I'm a little pissed and feeling brave so I drilled threw the plug, no luck with Allens or even a easyout getting it to turn so I split it with a diamond point chisel in 2 places and popped the pieces out with a screw driver and a pair of needle nose. The sludge was all the way down to bellow the oil holes in the rod journal with a teaspoon of chrome flakes. The previous owner must not have known that there was a oil filter inside the oil pan.

Man, I can't say enough good things about the Associated Builders (GDAB). Most of the guys that were contenders for the final 12 are producing sweet builds! We are gona have to do a gallery of all the bikes when they are done.

Loving it bros!

Maybe a hard tail?
Maybe a Vincent style rear section 4" longer and a goose neck in front?

Dave, I would use this beemer as inspiration for your build, either that or cafe it! I'm having a difficult time seeing that thing as a chopper with that frame.

Like the Beemer. It's gotta be a chopper anybody can run down to the dealer and buy one in cafe dress or bolt on a few cafe things.Don't plan to keep any of the rear frame and still haven't decided on the front.
I'm thinking on something like this Vincent for the rear suspension. Only with a much better looking seat.

If I stretch the rear 4" and rake it till it sets almost level with the Honda forks It will have a 82" wheel base
http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu299/dustydave/MockupRHRear_zpsf3041dd2.jpg
Still deciding probably extend it in back 4" with a Vincent style rear section and just rake in front, but still thinking about a goose neck.

Hey grease balls, ole Linky has been working hard in the shop again. Got the motor sitting square in the frame finely. Still working on the mounts waiting on a machined piece to wrap the motor mounts up. Made up some tabs to mount the oil tank, made some tabs to mount my forward controls checked chain allignment and clearance and some other shit. Here is how she sits as of tonight.35027 Check out my build thread here http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?p=446509#post446509 where I kinda take you on a pictorial tour of Back Porch Choppers and get a little deeper on what's going on with this build. Hey guys, just throwing this up here to give the associated builders first crack at it. I have this brand new in the box E@L Saddlery seat, stainless steel pan, aluminum buttons real nice and good quality. I thought I was going to use it but it's not going to work for this build. So it's for sale or trade for another seat set up. PM me if your interested.

Here is my 89 I entered with, the plan is to keep suspension and keep it 2 up. Built some bars from .120 Dom and built then went with a little frisco sporty tank, old gold garage cobra seat on a bobtail fender and sissy bar I bent up outta 1/2" round cold rolled. For the rubber I'm using an enduro front and in back it's a classic style shinko. http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q659/jonathon-davis/24A8B5B4-065A-403A-9E1C-44D1D3FD92F2-11265-00000EF8B11830A5_zps4a1b86b1.jpg http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q659/jonathon-davis/448400DC-DC1F-4104-9AD6-4BCA4F026A0C-11265-00000EF8A6F5C9A3_zps3e5b09e5.jpg

Not too sure how it compares to the other frisco tank but I had the 3.1 gallon sporty tank before and the new one is a couple inches skinnier up front. I think it's worth the switch, but with the little cobra seat my old tank looked huge and outta place

Been a minute since I've been able to get back in the garage thanks to the holidays and work and such, but finally got back at it. And before I go I gotta say all the bikes in the Associated Builders category are lookin friggin awesome. Far cry better than mine is gonna loook. Anyway, here we go.

<a href="http://s1131.beta.photobucket.com/user/MalawibwanA/media/photo13.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m560/MalawibwanA/photo13.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo13.jpg"/></a>

Got some more work done on my tank although I'm still really not diggin it. I cut it far too small. I'm going to finish it up anyway just for practice but I've got a cheapy mustang tank on the way to cut up. Gonna take my time and do that one exactly right. Still workin on my welding skills and realizing that I need loads more practice. That being said, I didn't blow too many holes in this one and though they arent pretty, they are solid.

<a href="http://s1131.beta.photobucket.com/user/MalawibwanA/media/photo14.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m560/MalawibwanA/photo14.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo14.jpg"/></a>

Also got the engine out and still continuing to be amazed at what the PO did to this thing. The speedo cable was held in with electrical tape. Super awesome. Got my hardtail in the mail on valentines day so I'll be finishing up cleaning the frame this week. Pretty stoked on it and the guys at Lowbrow do a friggin awesome job on the frames. Once thats all done things will move along a little quicker me thinks.

This past week has been a good one.
1st I got my rear wheel bearing retainer tool that I ordered in.
I had taken my wheels a local shop to get the tires taken off and the bearings pulled so I could re-spoke and possibly powder coat the wheels. Well they had problems with the rear wheel bearing retainer. This is what I got back from the shop.
http://adamsvt.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Erics-custom-GL/i-Tfpdr3m/0/M/IMG_1052-M.jpg
To be fair to the shop they let me know they were having problems getting it out and asked if I wanted them to continue or leave as is. I said go ahead, cause if you guys can't get it out doubt I will be able to.
When I went to pick up they apologized and didn't charge me for any of their work. Luckily with the poor snow winter they did not have a lot of snowmobiles to work on. I think that I had given them a challenge and they did their darndest to get it out.
Luckily I had a couple spare wheels at home that I attempted to get the retainer out.
Here was my process.
1. Soak in PB blaster multiple times a day for a week.
2. Research on NGW for best Method
3. drill out the punch marks
4. Try to use the Punch and Screw driver method
this did not budge anything
5. Thread each hole and screw in a bolt and long lever:
http://adamsvt.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Erics-custom-GL/i-PNB92S5/0/M/IMG_1037-M.jpg
-This resulted in breaking out two of the holes.
6. Use a drift and try to turn the retainer.
- just broke out more of the retainer
7. Break down and order a bearing retainer tool.
This is what I ordered "Motion Pro 08-0227 XR Bearing Retainer Tool" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GZNCCW/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This was received in a couple of days and worked perfectly.
Using my impact gun and in about 30 seconds I removed both bearing retainer that I broke and one that had not been damaged.
This is the one I had busted:
http://adamsvt.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Erics-custom-GL/i-3X8BVB4/0/M/CA_02241323321305-M.jpg
This is the other spare wheel:
http://adamsvt.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Erics-custom-GL/i-pnkJmGj/0/M/CA_02241323315872-M.jpg

Next I had a bunch of different parts show up at the door:
My new speedo/Dash unit
http://adamsvt.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Erics-custom-GL/i-3BVs65N/0/M/CA_02241323312483-M.jpg
Parts for the Hydraulic Clutch Conversion, New Spark Plug Caps, & Steering Stem bearings
http://adamsvt.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Erics-custom-GL/i-bWPkDjz/0/M/CA_02241323313588-M.jpg
And Finally the newly sealed gas tank from Elizabeth Radiator
http://adamsvt.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Erics-custom-GL/i-zDdww27/0/M/CA_02241323311027-M.jpg

Then I was able to get my engine swapped into my Sidecar rig to make sure that it is going to run properly.

I would say a successful week, even thought I found a couple of electrical gremlins that kept me from actually starting the bike.

Well, you guys want the good news or the better news? OK good news, I get a three day vacation from work for a safety violation ( jumped out of a boom lift that was 70' in the air across a 4' gap onto a building). Better news now I get 5 days to work on the Magic Carpet Ride.

I spent part of today bending 1/4 inch steel tubing and welding it to the frame
I hate exposed wiring with a passion. It makes even the best bike look unfinished. So where I cannot run the wires inside the frame (backbone and down tube on an OIF triumph) I am welding tubing to the frame to house the wires.

I do not have any pics of the frame stripped, but it will be in metallic silver by tomorrow night. Then candy orange copper by next weekend. I am planning on leaving the hubs of the wheels raw aluminum, but doing the outer rims gloss black.

older pic of the bike. Pipes have been finished since the pic, and I got a new seat, and the rear section was finished (including brackets for brake anchor and exhaust)

all steel molding, no bondo
http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad123/wreckingcrewstands/IMAG0042_zps931ec544.jpg

need a new primary cover. I wanted the finish to be raw aluminum, but the only raw primary I have is pitted and ugly

and the new seat...(scrap wood used to help with alignment of hinge so I could see if the seat was going to rub on the tank)

A little more progress from yesterday. I got my oil tank and battery tray all mounted. It's starting to look a bit more like a bike again. Up next, tag mount and start messing with the pipes. Can't say enough about Bear and the guys at OBB, it's been such a hugh help having their support.

had this pic on my phone, and forgot about it... anyway, this was the first sunny day of spring, and I had the frame sitting outside to sand on it.
You can see how I moved the oil fill spout from the top of the backbone, behind the gas tank, to the side, so I could get the seat fitting tighter against the tank. I hate seeing a lot of backbone. I prefer when everything flows together. This was a challenge with a triumph OIF frame, but that was part of my reason for using that frame. The unpopularity appealed to me for some reason.

The fender was flared, slightly, so the top section of the fender struts lock inside the fender

I had a difficult time with the axle plates. no one makes a set for use with a triumph sprung hub..so I had to get a little creative. Obviously the whole rear section is hand made. There is no kit for what I wanted to do.

So, I know its been awhile since I made any actual progress on this thing, but broken bones take their sweet time to heal. I made it out to Harley Guthery's shop "Guthery Customs" up in Edmond yesterday. He was able to re bend the back tail loop to line up rather nicely. Got it all welded up, (he even threw in welding my finger for free, hahahaha, I'm an idiot, lol) Many thanks go to the ever so humble Harley Guthery!

I had another productive day in the garage. I took the stock pipes and cut off the crossover tube and patched up the holes.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn237/03wrxer/arrrr3_zps30b2f90a.jpg

Bought some straight lengths of 1.75" from Pep Boys and welded them on.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn237/03wrxer/arrrr1_zps55c7e08a.jpg

Fabbed up a couple mounts, front and rear.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn237/03wrxer/arrrr2_zpsffcf2b9b.jpg

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn237/03wrxer/arrrr4_zps492bde30.jpg

I'm pretty stoked on how they came out, first because I have about $15 bucks into them, second it's the first set of pipes I've ever done and they're exactly how I wanted them.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn237/03wrxer/arrrr7_zpsba97d63d.jpg

To completely finish them I will be wrapping them leaving about 9" exposed on the ends which I'll be hitting with some silver header paint.

I also finished my tag bracket. It's just sheet metal, flat stock and steel spacers.

It's great to see all the progress happening! Some sweet stuff going on out there.

I've been busy on the bike, getting ready to finish up some tab mounting on the frame so I can move on to paint.

Here is where I'm at:

Got the fiberglass seat ready for paint and upholstery

Rear sets mocked up

Battery tray and rear fender mocked up

I hope to finish the rear sets over the long weekend and start priming!

Cheers,

Haven't posted on this thread in a bit. Been down with back issues, had surgery and now I'm back at it. Changed the original front to an 18 over and made new rockers for better trail numbers. The rockers, sissy, and top motor mount are gone to the chrome shop. I welded a rib around the rear fender, bent a new set of bars and got the exhaust all fit and tacked up today

waiting on parts for mine... have tires coming from Tucker Rocky. 19s on the front and rear. I the wheel hubs are in the original aluminum finish, but the outer rims are now finished in black. Have a nickel plated chain coming from Parts Unlimited. And new petcocks from an ebay seller.
all external fasteners are now stainless allen head bolts, or studs with stainless acorn caps. That means that holes were retapped to UNF threads or drilled out and heli coiled. When the new fuel petcocks arrive, both fuel and oil lines will be done in braided stainless.

The paint was something that I experimented with, and liked. it is candy orange copper. But I bought just the pigment, and then mixed it with a satin finish clear. I laid that over a non metallic silver. it was meant to be minimal flash, and all business. it came out a little brighter then I wanted, but I like it

The wife is still in the hospital a hundred miles from the house and i am still sleeping in the back of the Suburban. So getting that VW cylinder machined into a sleeve and pressed in was one of the few things I did get done. They are talking about sending her home next week but I don'i think there is any way I'll get back to the build in time.

Hey Dusty, I'm not sure but I want to believe the deadline of June 1st was for the selected Dozen. At least that's what I want to believe sense I've been working out of town for the last month and have fallen way behind scedual myself. Hopefully Bear can chime in and let us know for sure.

Been busy on small stuff for the past couple of days. I reworked the exhaust a bit to close the gap between the horizontal pipes. Made the rear exhaust support out of stainless round bar, made all the bungs and got it installed today. Made a pair of breather bolts for it, now I have to make the carb support. Bent up the headlight mount out of stainless bar and turned the mounts on the lathe. I need to get a stainless allen bolt and some stainless acorn nuts to finish it out.

Off the lift and on the ground, still need to put the front rotor on and bleed the brakes. But basically all there's left is to ride it. Proper pics of the final product to follow.

I got the chop all buttoned up last night. I can't thank Bear enough for all the support he's give us associate builders. He really stepped up and it helped put a ton. Also it's nice to have a great neighbor who let's you take over his garage and spends every Sunday for the past 10 weeks helping and teaching me to weld, thanks Al. CC and QCB were also a great help and resource. It feels great to set out with an idea and a deadline and accomplish both. I can't wait to put some miles on it.

Hey guys, no pics until i finish my cb550 tomorrow or tuesday, i just wanted to share my party flyer. it's been in the chopcult pop ups for a couple weeks so you all might have seen it already. Bear was cool enough to make it for me and i didn't want to post it until i had the bike done...........couldn't wait though i'm just too damn excited. bike's turning out super titties!! i'll be having some giveaways donated by my local suppliers(t-shirts ect) and a couple from me as well as whatever else i can get my hands on between now and the party day. i also made this little giveaway trophy for the coolest bike to show up (kind of against the greasy dozen theme but hey it'll be fun!). my friend is scheduled to be here with his band and i'll be serving up free hotdogs, burgers and beer while supplies last. i'll do my best not to turn a hungry/thirsty mouth away. if your in the neighborhood, cruise on by i'd love to meet you (and feed you!)................:cheersmate:

Hey guys - I'm Trad, from Austin TX and my SR500 chop is one of the associated builds. I'd be further along, but the wife and I had the dreaded "oncoming cager turning left" incident three weeks ago. totaled the bike, and was laid up for a few weeks. VERY lucky there was only one broken bone between us.

So needless to say, not one thing has been done on the bike for 21 days. Anywho - here are some pics from throughout the build.

Here we got the drop seat hard tail, the hand made forwards, and the bars. More pics to come.

For the purposes of this summer - I'm going to stick with mag wheels and stock forks. Next winter I'm switching to wire rims and a handmade springer.

The electrical is in between the rear tire and engine on the lower frame, and the bar end mirror was a quick fab from spare parts, but I like the way it looks. The exhaust is getting a small piece of pipe with an upward bend matching the frame rail so I can mount an up-swept muffler I have laying around.

-Bear

Hey guys! I've been meaning to post some stuff up about my build but just haven't had enough time in the day. What I have is an 83 Goldwing, I was looking at making it into a chopper but until I get a new welder it might be a bit of a stretch for the show in June. Currently I've been able to fab up a suicide shift, and brackets for my Jerry cans, I also did some extensive work rewiring the bike, making it a bit more practical and simple...I'll have some pics up soon, having a bit of trouble uploading for some reason. Ride easy.

So I still haven't been able to post up any pics...my computer is killing me. The goldwing is coming along, I'm getting the rims and frame powder coated with in the next few weeks. Hoping to have it done by the end of May. Should I post to the other thread for the build? Excited to see everyone's build.
