A little about where im coming from i originally bought a sportster 48 chopped it up a little and put some bolt on parts on it and decided to go another route. I since sold the 48 and bought a 99 sportster 1200 with only 3200 miles. I really dig the japanese style bikes and definitely dig the stuff coming out of mercury moto and the build aghostinside did. This is my first build so im looking forward to it and for the feedback from the cult. Here is a picture of my 48 right before i sold it then a couple pics of the build bike. Last picture is the look im shooting for and hope to accomplish. Absolutley in love with that bike.

I got the first piece of the puzzle today. I had my local cycle shop Rullo Custom Cycles fab me a gas tank, came out awesome! Definitely the look im going for. I hopefully will have some pictures of it mocked up this weekend. I also had the wheels and hubs powdercoated with some new rubber.

Looking good, but why did you get rid of the 48?

That was a good looking bike and could of easily been crazy oranged, it was already half way there!

That 48 was sick, just woulda ditched the signals, horns and put a car ignition on it foot clutch jockey shift, and call it a damn near done bike.

was probably easier to sell it make back some coin, then to thrash that bike by stripping 3 miles of wire and fuel injection stuff. I had an 08 and now im riding a 92. for some reason i like having a evo sporty, but one old enough that its still simple.

love the jap style builds. should be sweet.

Pretty much everything Randeezy said. I made out good on the sale of the 48 and got the 99 sportster for a great price and have some left over coin to hopefully get a 60's c10 as my 4 wheel project. As much as i loved the 48 i was constricted with what i could and couldnt do. I should have went this route from the beginning but lessons learned. Thanks guys

Ask and you shall receive!.I got to work on it yesterday and today with the help from my dad.. Yesterday got the wiring harness all ripped out and them old shitty bars taking off.Today got the tank and bars mocked up. You can see the powdercoated wheels and hubs and the new tires. Wanted to go with a meatier front tire rather then a skinny. Also staying with the 19 inch front wheel. I got the bars from a fellow chopculter. I think they are zombie performance 6inch rise. Not sure if im going to stick with them, thinking maybe something different that are at least 8inches. The next step is bringing the bike up to my work(auto body shop) and figuring out the rear fender. I think im going to go with something similar to the 48 rear fender. All i did there was get a fender from lowbrow and cut a shit ton off and flipped it up.

Not much work getting done on the bike this weekend, i got to work, would much rather be wrenching on the bike. But still got a little done, brought the tank with me to do the bodywork portion of it. Got it mudded and smoothed out then primered. Heres some pics. Hopefully by next weekend i will have some headway on the rear fender.

Yea i thought the bars were going to be low from the beginning they are 6in rise im thinking i need at least 8in but maybe even 10in so we will see. I like the style of bar though just a little taller. I got a bob fender that i got from lowbrow that i plan on cutting and chopping up and doing it similar to the rear fender on my 48. As far as paint im not sure yet. thanks for the feedback

Is the tank mounted in the same position as the pics of mockup on page 1?

That seat does sit without any gaps. Just not as far up as you have it laying on the frame. That's how ghost ordered it.

Rene, the tank isn't permanent but that is where I want the tank to mount. That being said if the tank is there and seat mounts like you made it there is a big gap between the front edge of the seat and the tank. I didn't really think about it when I got it from ghost. So I was going to try and modify and see if I could come up with something to sit up a little higher on the backbone. Or should I pm you to discuss some options on some other seats?

The tank is just a narrowed peanut and the fender is off of an old cb i picked up at a swap meet for 5 bucks.

A little bit of an update. I got the tank permanently mounted. Wasnt sure exactly where to mount it but really digging the position of it. Started chopping the rear fender. I started out with a bob fender from lowbrow i cut it all up and narrowed it a little bit. Still got to mount it permanently. Trying to get the exact sweep that i want, sucks working by yourself sometimes. So right now the plan is to get the rear fender mounted, headlight mounted, and the exhaust. After everything is mocked up i plan on stripping the whole bike down. Plan is to shave the fork legs and trees and powdercoat them black. Also going to clean up the frame, weld up any unused holes and cut off any brackets that i wont be using also going to smooth out all the factory welds and then powdercoat the frame black. Still alot of work to do but its moving along.

I'm getting there Brutha. Just sent the tank out for a pinstripe flame job. Moving all the switches and choppin the bars in a bit further. relocating my blinkers up front to the downtube and some other odds and ends. Just finished up the exhaust but I need to make some hangers for the pipe ends. Other than that ill be ready to go come spring. Stoked on how its coming along. Again, good luck and have fun with the tear down. Post some pics of the tear down process if you can. Hailz.

Im keeping the seat i ended up ripping it apart so i could modify the pan. I worked on it yesterday and got it where i want it and so there is clearance from the fender. I think it looks perfect. Just have to get it rewrapped now. The last picture everything is mounted permantly. So next is the exhaust and going to get new bars. Want to run something different just not sure what yet i have my eye on a set just not sure how they would look on this bike.

Been a while since i updated, ive been dealing with a torn acl and torn meniscus. Not fun!.
Have a little progress to update. I had a new set of bars made by Rullo Custom Cycles in PA. Had them designed after some of the bars that masa at Luckmc has made. I think they look incredible and exactly what i wanted. Also had my seat reupholstered. Brought my tank to Ryzart to have him do some work to it.

Thanks bro i appreciate it. We got way to much in common. Same knee problems, same birthday, into the same style bikes!. Ha! I went to three different doctors for opinions the first two were like car salesman and just wanted me to sign soome papers so they can do surgery but i didnt want to be out of work for 2-3 months recovering so i went to another doctor and he reccomended no surgery because right now its not giving out on me. Doing my daily routine of work and some excercise my knee feels fine, he doesnt give it out or anything. Some pain sometimes but not much. Eventually down the line i know ill have to get surgery but right now im cool.

Forgot about the same bday. Creepy. Lol. Dude if theres one piece of advise I can give you it's get the surgery now. It's like people telling you when you're in HS and you hate it and they're like you're gonna wish you were back there. Same thing here man. It's only gonna get worse if it is torn. I was able to do a lot shit on mine but if I stepped off a curb the wrong way or got up and moved to quick laterally and forgot that I had the injury I'd be reminded in the worse way. If its been diagnosed as torn, it won't get better without the surgery trust me and as you get older it will get worse. The worse part is loss of cartilage cause that can't really be replaced and I have lots of that cause I waited to long and this thing has popped a hundred times since I injured it. Should be able to throw a leg over and mc in a couple months post surgery. Good luck brother.

Its been a while since i updated so here are some updated pics. Just got the bike back from my local cycle shop, Rullo custom cycles did a full stainless exhaust for me came out awesome!
I had Ryzart do the paint work on my tank which also came out fucking awesome. Rich was great to do business he kept me up to date with everything. Check out his paint work in the chop market.
I still have to do the wiring and some other odd ends.

Thanks joe. I remember your bike at ride to skate last year. Didnt see it this year. Ill get some better pictures tomorrow with it on the bike. But pretty much I welded a couple tabs to the fender so it hugs the stock bracket on the frame and just nut and bolt it. I wanted a clean look and didn't want any side to side movement I think I accomplished that. Hopefully. Hope that helps. Let me know.

Throughout this whole build I had it set in my head that I was going to powder coat the top rockers and the lower rocker housing black and leave the center polished. Now I'm not sure. Just to get an idea I wrapped electrical tape around the top and bottom to get an idea. Right now leaning towards leaving them silver. What do you guys think?

Welded up the stock tank mounts front and back. And smoothed out where the rear fender struts were! All smoothed and primed! (The little things) 398743987539876

I like both, what about just the top rocker? Hard to tell without the tank. I like with the tape mock and without, but think it would fit the theme (mainly looking at the tank) better with at least the top rocker blacked out. just my $.02

Looks great though. Really impressed.

I would say leave them polished if you are leaving the lower cam cover polished. But if you do the lower case black then do the rockers black. If it was up to me I would do the black.

wingmanolen
05-29-2013, 12:31 PM
Thanks guys! Yea I like them both too but think I'm just going to stay polished. I don't want to over do it with black. And yea going to leave the cases polished. I hit the sprocket cover with a red scuff pad and really like the way it looks so think I'm going to go that route39903

Looks good homie! I Wish my cases were polished so I could have brushed them out like my rockers but Ive got that shitty paint/powdercoat finish.

Strip the paint, sand and scuff. Got a sprocket cover off a nightster, I think? Had the textured grey paint.. Now looks like this.

Nice build by the way. Love brushed aluminum!:cheersmate:

Couple minor things got done today. Scuffed the rocker covers to give them the brush look. Also I powder coated brake pedal black along with the peg mount on the opposite side. I think it breaks it up some. Got the rear fender and burly shocks mounted up. 40100401014010240103

Love it. Only thing I'm not head over heels over is the tank, only because I prefer a more basic style, which I think the rest of this bike bleeds. Can't wait to see the final product, and I hope everything fires up as expected when you hit the button.

The carb top is a biltwell part. Biltwellinc.com

The choke relocation I got from a fellow chopculter. TattooDTA is his name. In the classified section search cv carb choke tab relocation kit.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the feedback. The wiring is all finished and it fired up first push this morning. I just want to go over everything and put some finishing touches on it. Should be out riding this weekend. Rawxpower, Rullo custom cycles made the bars for me they are located in PA.

So today finished up all the wiring went over everything and loctited all the bolts and made sure everything was secure. As you can see from the discoloring of the stainless steel pipes I had it running! Started right up on the first push!! All I have left is to put a new throttle cable and clutch cable and maybe a little tuning with the carb.
