so i've been collecting parts pretty much all summer planning on this winter redo, nothing to crazy just front end swap, new bars, complete rewire getting rid of the stock controls, change out the super B to an E, rework the rear fender and whatnot...
<a href="http://s966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_20121216_140051.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/IMG_20121216_140051.jpg" border="0" alt="Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App"></a>
i started with this 76 fxe last April, this is how i got it
<a href="http://s966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/1976%20fxe/?action=view&amp;current=5K.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/1976%20fxe/5K.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
by may i had it looking like this to ride for the summer
<a href="http://s966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/?action=view&amp;current=CameraEffects-1338419233014.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/CameraEffects-1338419233014.jpg" border="0" alt="Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App"></a>
so i started with the front end
<a href="http://s966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_20121216_172503-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/IMG_20121216_172503-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App"></a>

purerockfury

so i got the front end on, new bars, 16" up front pretty much sorted out, just have to lower it about 2"s
<a href="http://s966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_20121216_181215-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/IMG_20121216_181215-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App"></a>
then i picked up one of these
<a href="http://s966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_20121222_150003.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/IMG_20121222_150003.jpg" border="0" alt="Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App"></a>
started getting rid of some wires
<a href="http://s966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_20121223_140929.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/IMG_20121223_140929.jpg" border="0" alt="Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App"></a>
don't need these
<a href="http://s966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_20121223_155459.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/IMG_20121223_155459.jpg" border="0" alt="Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App"></a>
here's about where i'm at
<a href="http://s966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_20121223_155921.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae149/purerockfury71/cult%202/IMG_20121223_155921.jpg" border="0" alt="Uploaded from the Photobucket Android App"></a>

you doooodsss ever start a "simple" project then end up in it deeper than you had planned and now you don't know where to stop? well, that's where i am...i have to take the swing arm off for the swap and fix a leaking tranny seal which means the primary is coming off, i'm not a big fan of the blue and it's kinda chipped up so now the decision whether i just say fuck it and pull the engine and trans and powder coat the frame black...but then where does it end? pull the heads make sure everything good in the hood? paint the tins aswell?...haven't decided what i'm going to do just yet, hadn't really set aside the cash for a complete build and i have a sportster build in the back ground on hold til i get this thing sorted out...what the fuck did i get myself into? why can't i just fuckin ride shit and leave well enough alone...lol

Ha Ha Ha you're livin my life...and probably everybody else that post on here. Started out doin the same thing on my 75 Shovel. Cept, wanted to change out the handlebars and the tail light and then it morphed into a sporty front end and sporty king tank. Now I'm into the wiring, the oil tank lines a seat, tires and shocks. HELP ME!

Are you kidding? Every damn time! I try to do most mods in small, manageable chunks and it still bites me in the ass. Witness my slow-moving shovel project that was a good riding bike just a couple months ago and I keep going deeper and deeper... Good luck, bike looks good.

ha! i figured i wasn't alone on this & i too thought about a tank swap...i'm glad i took a few to post this an think a bit before i just completely ripped it apart, still not 100% sure yet but leaning towards just doing what i set out to do and leave the frame alone for now...this is my rider, last thing i want is two projects come spring and no rider!

it's funny you plan one thing and it leads to another and another and another as the $ add up, i still have to get an ignition, new rear tire, new rear shocks as well and so on and so on just to finish what i started!

&thx!

Haha I know exactly what you mean! I say you get her back up and running and once you get the sporty done then get back to the shovel. Best to have one bike up and one down than both down at the same time. That's the main reason I need multiple bikes, I hate being without a runner at any given time!

yea, it was on and off there for awhile, i beat the dude down like $600 but he wouldn't budge after that even with a stack of cash in his face but it was a clean bike, good running, with low miles and he owned it since 1985 so i went for it..

funny thing is, i got like $300 for that rear fender set up with the SB&F struts so someone out there likes them...

if i can stop spending all my $ on this thing for a min i gotta get in to see you to finish my sleeve...

so still undecided i decided to press on and broke out the pressure washer & cleaned it up then started on the swing arm...little chilly for pressure washing but i made it threw it

stripped the paint & new races/bearings in the round swing arm, being 50 something years old i figured it was a good idea

got it pretty much mocked up for now, have to make some new spacers and figure out a brake stay then i'll take it back off, get the rust off of it and paint it & re-install...

that's sitting at about 4" ride height which is what i'm going for, anyone interested or want to trade a newish (only run this summer) set of 11" shocks for some 12's?

Alright, I'll fess up. I really didn't mind the look of that rear fender set up. I was gonna ask you about it but after somebody gave it the ass vote I chickened out. Thing is I want to do a sissy bar on mine and it wouldn't go with that short fender set up.

If you wanted to save some money you could totally just scuff the frame where its blue, tape up the motor, spray up to and behid the neck casting and back t your trans casting and Krylon that fucker! Powder is way expensive and I know what its like building more than one bike at once. I think you would be happy woth it and than you can spend the money on painting the tanks.

i thought about that but whoever did it pulled the engine so everything on the lower frame is blue, so taping everything off would be a pain in the ass...i think i'm just going to leave it as is for now
