View Full Version : Bead Blasting Cases?

hey guys, gunna begin working on my cb550 project here pretty soon and wanted to ask about blasting the cases. I usually don't even get this into trying to make the engine look nice, mostly degrease and paint it, period. I want to make this one look nicer though. today i tried soda blasting just to see what it would do. didn't really change the color of the cases, just took off alittle grease is about all. what is the best media to use for this? I have seen some cases turn out pretty shiny with plastic bead? anyhow, any info is appreciate..........

the oil lines are going to need to be cleaned the hell out after you do this ... blasting media gets into every damn nook and or cranny

oll lines? cb550?

oil passages

Oil passages, lines, it don't matter - that shit will get into EVERY little crevice, crack, oil passage, etc.. It works really well to clean, but cleaning after bead blasting sucks. You'll probably have to chase every threaded hole as well, because that glass will cling to the threads - causing a ton of headaches when you reassemble. Learned all of this on an engine I built, ran for 3 days, and then tore back down and it looked like someone had poured that stuff into the filters... I thought I had cleaned it well enough, but not quite obviously :banghead: That was many years ago, but a lesson I've never forgotten.

I would feel more comfy with baking soda but it ain't cutting it. I have the engine out. gunna try glass bead with the engine fully assembled less pipes/carbs. prolly stuff those holes with plastic bags and then duck tape the shit out of them? not worried about the covers cause I am going to take them off later and polish them

I agree with MegaDON666, you should look into vapor blasting. I remember seeing before and after photos on the JJ of a guy who did vapor blasting. The parts that he blasted looked brand new after he was done with them.

did you take the cases for professional soda blasting, or just try one of the online ideas for using your own compressor?

the coarse soda medium used in a professional soda blaster runs $45 for a 30 lb bag, but it is not the same stuff you buy at a grocery store
these cases, side, covers and head, were painted black before I soda blasted them.

hey guys, I blasted the carbs tonight with glass bead, damn shit looks brand new with minimal effort!!! I stuffed the carb openings with cotton and then taped the shit out of them. it did ok holding the glass bead out but it will have to get torn down and cleaned just in case, I will be polishing the bowls and caps. here is a couple pics of it blasted................
