Does this work? I have to strip the chrome off of a steel rim to get it replated.

I doubt it. Have it sand blasted.

I think you need to have the plater remove it.

most of the platters do a "all-in" sand blasting and platting

No it will not remove chrome! It will remove burnt boot sole, plastic grocery bags, and burnt flesh off of chrome. I imagine it would remove a lot more, those are just the ones I have removed from
chromed pipes with oven cleaner.

The plating shop should have a tank of HCL or Nitric acid to strip parts they plate. Or sand blast it. If you sand blast you may have to have the part polished after striping to get a good finish with nickel chrome.

Can you use electrolysis to remove chrome? Anyone try it?

If I'm not mistaken, chrome is essentially like rust in a controlled environment.....similar process.

I think yer best bet would be sandblast....which your chromer would take care of no??

I've heard that oven cleaner will remove anodizing.

I've heard that oven cleaner will remove anodizing.

When anodizing, just like human skin, the metal pores open so you can introduce a pigment. Once you're done, pores just closes so I doubt oven cleaner would remove anodizing. It's not just a coat, it's like a "tattoo"...

Oven cleaner DOES in fact remove anodizing. Needs to be wire brushed or lightly blasted as it leaves a black residue. I use it to strip AN fittings blue and red awfulness regularly. But won't take chrome. Muriatic acid will remove chrome but not the nickel or copper. Plater I used would strip chrome in muriatic and bead blast the rest.
