I decided to build another drop seat swingarm sporty. I want high performance suspension, mucho ground clearance, a fast engine and nice tucked-in chopper posture. Oh yeah, I'm also trying to keep the total under 2000 bucks! The only thing I don't have so far is an engine. I've got new chain, sprockets, frame, gas tank, fender, Works performance shocks, 1200S forks, new Metzlers, Mikuni carb, swingarm blah blah blah and I'm only into all this stuff for $800 right now. I'm hoping to score a Buell engine for about 900 to 1000.
This frame won't be getting my usual stretch in the downtubes/backbone. The neck gusset will get chopped out and redone though.
This is what I started with
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/tobiism/Under%202000%20build/DSCN3500.jpg
We all know how fast this happens
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/tobiism/Under%202000%20build/DSCN3510.jpg
Now I need new upper shock mounts
turn inner shock mount slugs, drill plug weld holes, press inserts in place and weld up.

Then using my trusty conduit bender I bent up some 1" .120" wall ERW.

That Supertrapp with 2-1 probably sounds awesome. I'd love to get my hands on a similar setup.

Conduit bender works well?

Thanks for the compliments guys!
Got some more work in tonight. Made my internal fender struts and some new bars. The fender has a lot more trimming in store for it, that is not its final shape! The bars are your average everyday 10.5" T-bars.

Looks good. There's an S1 engine for sale near here, but the shipping might kill the deal.

He had it for $950 a couple weeks ago.

Well things got put on serious hold for awhile. On November 28th I was on my way to work on my 1200 Bandit when a truck pulled out in front of me. It happened so fast my skid mark was only 8ft long. I crashed directly into the right side of the bed of his lifted F250. He swore he never saw me, and thought all the ruckus back there was his tire catching on the median or something! Result was a broken femoral neck, blown out and fractured left knee and fractured right knee. The screwed together repair they've done on my right hip has stripped out twice now, I've contracted three infections and now I'm waiting for the antibiotics to kill the last of the infections before we do a full hip replacement. So needless to say I haven't felt much like getting out in the garage.
My brothers in the Quad Cam Bastards knew I needed some cheering up and they also knew I needed an engine for my project. They all chipped in and bought an 883 from the classifieds and had it shipped to me.
They even had extra money left over that they handed over to me. And thats not even all of it! Jockeyshift Jeff, and Pablo rode out from Cali to help my buddy Mike W clean up my garage so I could get out there in my wheelchair.
Me with the engine my homies got for me

LOL yeah that lathe has some quirks but it has saved me SO much money. For a little POS you certainly can make a ton of shit with it. Makes me wonder just what I could do with a REAL lathe!!!

Alright guys this thread is coming back on line. I had to sell this project to help with medical bills. I sold everything except the engine(of course). So the idea of the build is the same. Keeping it under 2gs.
For this one Im going to build the frame. Im starting with just the rear engine mount section from a stock swingarm sporty frame. I will use a new neck and build the rest of the frame.
It will be deraked to 28 degrees, about 4-5 inches of stretch in the downtubes, about 3 inches out, and the seat area will be dropped about 1.5 inches and pushed back about 1 inch. The swingarm will be turned into a tube swingarm and will have about 2 inches of stretch over stock.
I will be using a mixture of different sportbike forks, grimeca calipers, 18/19 sportster mags, Dunlop K70 tires, Works shocks, chopped up thunderheader exhaust, Mikuni 40HSR carb and some other go fast goodies. For tank Im thinking of a Wassel. For seat, some type of cobra with a little kick up in the rear. Foot controls will be halfway between forward and mids( cant ride with mids any more after the accident. Legs get too cramped up.)
Here are some pics of the process so far.

Keep in mind the backbone does not have the 3 inches of stretch in it yet. This is just preliminary mockup, it wont be as smooshed looking.

Nevermind the square tubing, just messing around in mockup mode. This is where it will land for the neck. 4 inches of up stretch about 2 inches of out stretch.

I am going to use dyna right side footpeg mounts on both sides. I will make two blocks that have threaded bungs in them for the footpeg mounts and weld them to both side frame rails. The footpegs will be just in front of the timer cover.

Cool looking build you have, that's some serious skill. Nice to see you're up on two legs. I'm in Chandler too if you ever need an extra hand, or leg! :)

I might've skipped over it but are you still using a GSXR swingarm? The frame looks bitchin'!!

Thanks man! No Im not going to use it. It will be too big and bulky for how svelte the frame looks. Plus narrowing it and shortening it wasnt going to be the job that I thought it was.

Man that will be an awesome dual sport machine! I have a 94 1200 sporty that I bought right before I got hurt and I'm trying to decide what I want to do with it in terms of chopping.

one of the major features I wanted in my new bike is the ability to take it off road. We have so many awesome trails around here in AZ that I want to explore. The way my frame was going just wasnt doing it for me in that department. So in typical Tobias style I chopped it up and started again. Now its getting to be just where I want it.
Next up is some 16 inch shocks and the shinkos!

So I'm 2 years late and a buck short on this thread. Anyone got updates on how this build went or the OP's recovery?

Shit got out of hand LOL. My recovery is great but my legs will never be the same. The Lord has been good to me though so I can't complain.

Have you used them before? I was looking at the shinko 705s since I do mostly road, but I like the tread pattern better like you have there, looks more aggressive.

Not yet but they are widely acclaimed by the dual sport crowd.
