View Full Version : Question about cleaning flat black

01-31-2010, 12:57 AM
I just had my tins painted flat black and while installing them I got some smudge marks on them from my dirty hands. Is there special ways to clean flat back? I wiped them very gently with a dry cotton cloth and it didn't remove the smudges. Also not sure about wiping it or cleaning it with anything since the paint is fresh. Any advice?

After pinstriping flat black helmets, once the striping drys, I use rubbing alcohol to clean off the grid marks. I would try it in an inconspicous spot first to make sure that it does not remove the paint, but I dont think that it will.

Windex or 1/2 dishwashing soap & 1/2 water. I've been using windex for awhile and it works like a charm. Keeps it flat and cleans smudges. Others i used made the paint a bit glossy.

Simple Green Automotive.

I sprits down my entire (flat black & rust) bike with it, pop a top on a cold one, light up a smoke, get the hose, then rinse it off. If I'm feeling real energetic, I'll ask my wife to wipe it down with a shammy. LOL, ya know what happens then. Seriously, it works, doesn't leave a film like some detergents, and it smells good.

I painted mine flat black so I wouldn't have to clean it.

I've always used Windex and it works great...I'll try the simple green route and see if there's a difference.
