View Full Version : What's Wrong with a White Bike?

dberman
10-27-2012, 5:24 AM
I'm about to rebuild a stock road king. In terms of paint, I'm really leaning toward white (with black fat spoke wheels). Running this concept by friends, I'm being discouraged. They say it looks too much like a cop bike, or that I shouldn't do it unless I paint the frame white (way to much work to disassemble the entire bike down to the frame).

So I'm looking for input. What's wrong with white? I've seen some very clean bikes painted white. Is it too girly? Too law-enforcement? Too clean? Or just wrong?

Here's one concept:

<a href="http://s189.photobucket.com/albums/z82/dberman111/?action=view&amp;current=White-Noize-3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z82/dberman111/White-Noize-3.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Here's another:

<a href="http://s189.photobucket.com/albums/z82/dberman111/?action=view&amp;current=White.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z82/dberman111/White.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Yeah, I hear ya. I used to think so too. I swore I would never be seen on a bagger. But the ride is really comfortable, I mean really comfortable. And on long trips, it matters. I can still swing a turn on the road king and scrape the floorboards.

Jetblack
10-27-2012, 7:05 AM
Ride what you want no need to justify it, couches are comfortable hence the nickname. That paint looks like Rick James has been on it, I guess it's ghost flames or something but it looks like dirt.

White and chrome set each other off in my opinion, anything else looks off and dirties up the white instead of keeping it clean, even a white bike with black walls. Picture search engine a CA77 or CA95 and you'll see how the chrome and white walls set off a white bike. It stands on it's own, without embellishments from Rick James' boots.

If the thought of cleaning your bike with a Q-Tip brings joy to your life, sounds like a white bike would be perfect for you. Until I started riding year-round I could count of both hands how many times I've washed my bikes. I'll stick to black and rust.

It's YOUR bike. Do what YOU want.

Why do you care if your "friends" are giving you shit over your own opinions/tastes?

It's not middle school, grow up and paint your bike white and tell your "friends" to suck a dick.

I agree that the nagger at the top is kinda ugly but I'd ride it. I have been kicking around the idea of painting mine white too. Hard to keep clean though.

I think white tins would look great with a black frame (if you have it already, leave it), black rims, SS spoked, black hubs. You could do something with pinstriping to set it off a little. I just saw one like this recently over at Indian Larry's. They finished one up in this same exact combo with a lot of cool details and the white looked really nice. You can do SO much with it.

I like white bikes. Mine was white for a while. I just let what would be my favorite daily rider pass by on Craigslist. It was a white Dyna police bike with the police bags and everything. I pissed at myself for letting it go because I can't seem to find another. Most all cop bikes I see now are Road Kings and black.

Half Sack's bike was white.... and he's dead. on the show and in real life. if that doesn't convince you, nothing will.

but for real, i've been considering doing a pearl white on my sporty. just the tins, no frame. i think it'll look storm troopery, without being over the top.

imagine if cops started riding black bikes... everybody would have to get a new one.

well the cops here in el paso ride black bikes man and no one seems to be changing color just yet, and they also drive camaros and mustangs and f-150s chargers even seen a hummer or two(mind you they have eppd on the sides of them), but im sure there are alot of you all out there that are still driving those around.

Uh clearly he needs told to do what he wants since he lets his friend's opinions sway his decisions. And there are plenty of other instances on this site where people let others' opinions or definitions of 'cool' dictate what they do to their own bike.

I have a feeling Duffel's would have been 100% white if he wasn't talked out of it; by someone...Sterile and bland, does not a clean bike make. That's just my opinion; it's like going to someone's house or apartment...and all the walls are white with no pictures hung on them. It feels empty and institutionalized. Some can look good but I think it's rare...IMHO Corey's bike looks like crap, if it's still getting work there might be a chance to turn that around; but as it sits on the lift...I don't care for it.

FXDX came stock with lots of travel in the rear. they're not built to be a chopper, they're built to go fast and handle well.

comparing it to jasons bike is ridiculous. apples and oranges.

yeah, I understood there was a lot of travel to them stock. But I still do not like getting a nose bleed from elevation every time I swing a leg over a bike...
you would think that if someone was going to invest the effort in tearing id down for paint, the ride height would be addressed

Not if your gonna throw who the white bike belongs too; in the mix...it's a valid comparison between skaters bikes then; besides the white. Name dropping something on a poor choice isn't going to help it...except in some circles.

rus

i included his name because several people who posted bikes included the owner. i was under the impression that was the respectable thing to do.

comparing a 200X FXDX to a rigid pan just seems pointless. two completely different styles of bike. yeah jasons has more 'soul'. but coreys would run circles around it. some people care more about going fast than looking like they stepped out of easy rider. different strokes.

im not really interested in arguing. dude asked to see white bikes so i posted one. nothing else to it.

id say it was 'addressed' when he dropped a grand on aftermarket shocks to make it look like that. not your cup of tea (nor mine) but there are plenty of cats who are into that style. to each his own.

I think white bikes look good and aside from "dirt" they are esy to maintain... don't show any scratches or water marks whatsoever. I've painted a few and they are a PITA from the standpoint that if ANYTHING drops into the uncured paint... no matter how tint the speck... it freakin' shows. But they are easy to wet-sand & buff 'cuz you cannot see anything in the finish anyhow.

My fave for a white bike is to paint it white and top it with a bit of silver pearl... gives it some "shimmer".

Couple that I've done.

White bikes have a very fine line with me. I've seen some rad white chops but not many stockers that pulled off that look. Personally, I like the "cop style" but I'd throw down some checkerboards for the proper 2 tone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2_Tone) look.
Being mistaken for a cop bike may not be a bad thing. Cagers will probably pay a little more attention to you and slow down at first glance.

I appreciate that, thank you. Unfortunately, the guy who painted that bike disappeared, and is no longer painting or pinstriping. Happens every time I find a good painter.

The bike was done in the old early-'90's PPG factory pack Corvette 3 stage white platinum pearl, later carried on the Buicks, Cadillacs, etc. It's the bright white base, mid pearl, then the clear. You can see the pearl better in this photo. The flames and diamonds were done in HOK purple, with a magenta base, then med. grey pinstriping.

Was that bike on the Jesse James History of the Chopper video? I haven't seen that video in a while but I could swear that it is the same bike.

Very nice!

Good eye. Yes, same bike, and me riding it in the opening sequence of the HOC. My "15 minutes".

Jesse had the bike picked up, flew me out to Long Beach, stayed for a week, filmed the opening, flew me back, and shipped the bike back again. Paid for everything.

People don't know a 1/4 of what Jesse does for people.........
