I have an xs650 that I am hoping to finish it battery free. Any tips would help. Thanks in advance.

You're going to need a magneto for the ignition. You might do a search on magneto, there is a thread in the British bike section. I did see an ad on Ebay a few weeks ago for a 650 with a magneto, but there weren't many details.

What year xs?

'79 and older use a points ignition
'80 and newer use electronic ignition

I know that the points ignition can be "triggered" by a capacitor or small battery like shown in this thread

I'd recommend going to a permanent magnet charging system or at least make sure that your current charging system is in tip-top shape.

I'm not sure if this is an option for the '80+ models.

I know you can revert an '80+ model back to points ignition on those. Pamco Pete makes a good electronic ignition that replaces the points setup that I believe you could use with a tiny battery or capcitor.

I've also heard claims of a permanent magnet charging system producing enough voltage on the first kick to fire a points ignition, but I don't have any proof.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I remember reading where the Pangea Speed bike runs a similar setup (the banshee rotor), so you might ask Andy.
